The good Reverend's strategy is pretty simple - use his rods and throwing spear to soften up enemies, then cast Chant and Protection From Evil and wade in. Use the rods and the spear again to shoot fleeing monsters in the back. Although paladins have bad throwing skill, maia are good at it, so the spear is useful. Not useful enough that I want to hunt down well-balanced ego items, but trading the spear in for gold at the store would be like taking that Slay Orc brand and just... uh... throwing it away.
