Well, there was a new beta of Angband, so I decided to switch from OAngband and give it a try, especially after a few really dissapointing characters. (I still feell ike such a newbie at this game!)

Tagging all my equipment with level, dropper and/or P (purchase) makes for an interesting reminder of what's happened. The Cloak of Aman was a very lucky find, just sitting around on level 3; I haven't found an *Identify* yet so I can see what else it does. Acid recently damaged the +1 leather gloves a Kobold generously donated to the cause and an Iron Helm; both will be easily replaced on my next trip to town.

Wow, equipment in every slot; no character of mine has ever lived long enough to collect all that stuff! Hard decisions in the town -- I wanted to hoard a lot of stuff in the house, but selling it made sense if I could get, for example, the amulet of Resist Acid by selling the Leather Armor of Resist Acid [4,+7]. I never remember to use wands of Magic Missile anyhow...

Another dive, another few {excellent} items. 1AC for 50' of infravision seems fair, eh? L6 seemed to be home to a whole school of rogues...

Woo, a Tulwar of Acid! Ran across a band of Cave orcs and, while fighting them in a doorway, didn't know that just offscreen a whole bunch of green worm masses were breeding. Eventually chased off level 7 by giant white lice, far too many of them to count or deal with. Howver, I shall recall!

I thought I'd lost a whole level of experience but I just forgot I had the game open in another terminal! Whew! Anyhow, L9 brought me up against Bullroarer and Lagduf the Snaga. Both fell easily to the might of my Tulwar of Acid. Now my inventory is stuffed to the gills with {good} items I at least want to Identify before selling off to the shops...but I don't have any Recall scrolls. Here starts the walk up... sigh...

After the Walk Up, having sold a lot of loot that just didn't stack up to what I was wearing. Still, got +4 or so from some new boots and a shield, and enchanted the Tulwar of Acid by +3 to-hit. I'm about to Recall downward, having finally had the money to purchase some scrolls. This time, I gotta remember: stay away from stuff that can drain -- just 'cause I'm acid-resistant doesn't mean my stuff is!. I've got that nice bow -- I should use it on 'em!

Been taking it slow, for two reasons: a) I've been sick, and b) I got a little bored. Solved the boredom problem by going deeper into the dungeon -- now fights are a little dangerous, which is nice. I actually saw the low HP warning!

Look, look, I got an artifact! (Yeah, it's only the Phial of Galadriel, but still! it's only my second Angband character ever to get any kind of artifact.)

Along the way something odd happened: at L10 I got a Superb level feeling. I explored the ENTIRE level, but there was nothing -- no uniques, no artifacts, nada. What was the deal with that? This time around, level 10 had Grishnakh *and* the Phial, and only an "excellent" feeling...

On 29.2.2004 15:24 mccoyjf@hotmail.com wrote:
Well superb feelings don't happen for nothing. Assuming you didn't leave any unidentified EQ lying around, my guess is that the superb feeling was a vault. Level 10 would be awfully early to find one, but I think it is possible. They are usually completely walled off from the rest of the dungeon, and without monster detection or some-such to draw your attention to what's inside, you might not notice it. If you find youself in a similar situation later, look for big "empty" areas in the dungeon, especially ones with corridors running into them and dead-ending. Be warned, vaults contain out-of-depth treasure but also out-of-depth monsters.

Somehow I accidentally read a ?oR on the town level and only had the one -- had to walk all the way back up. Didn't take nearly as long as the last time, though; I was lucky finding the stairs. Now that I've finished what I was doing in the town, time to recall back down and start hacking -- I want to get to L15 this time -- towards that, traded 9AC from Ring of Protection for Free Action, seeing as I got paralyzed in a dangerous situation for the first time last session...

Thanks for the advice on vaults! I'll keep it in mind.

Well, a month of adventuring ended. Fell through a trap door on L14, which I was carefully exploring before WoRing back to town to sell off some heavy stuff. A scroll of Detect Objects showed a couple of things sitting nearby. I moved off to investigate, but couldn't get to them. I decided to dig. (Fatal mistake #1.) When I met up with a bunch of nasties, I forgot to switch back to my actual weapon in the heat of the moment. (Fatal mistake #2.) And then, I remembered: I'd left the Wand of Fireballs at home. (#3.) I tried to run for the nearby stairs, but it was all over...
