So, after lurking around this site on and off since Poschengband 4.0.1, I figure my first win is time to say hi. Though honestly I was expecting to die against the Serpent and post that instead - my only other character to come close died at Oberon! Poor Demon Warlock...

Anyway, where do I even begin? This has to be one of the weirdest first wins on the site. I picked up the Rune Sword on a whim after it became obvious that I was going to be mostly relying on melee, since it seemed cool and I wanted to try it out, fully expecting to die - all I really wanted out of this character was to experiment with Dual Cast and the Red Mage's full spell library, so as long as I could get that far whatever. Speaking of, never picking a race with an experience penalty over 200% ever again. I'm too used to humans, that was painful. But, I wanted to see just how far Red Mage spellcasting could go, so I needed a boost, and I knew I'd need to be good at melee so I was worried Shrewd would leave me with a problem doing enough damage. That was the basic thought process there. Also stacking Shrewd and Athena didn't drop the min failure rate below 4%, though I wonder if it would have helped make things like Holy Word be more reliable, and maybe Hellstorm be at all usable? I didn't think to check not-yet-minimums when I did that before making this character...

In conclusion? Utility is amazing, and damage is surprisingly useful! Though it will absolutely not be your primary source of damage, in the early game it can contribute ranged, and in mid decent AOE in Hellish Flames and Holy Orb, especially if you don't be me and pick for fast leveling. Though I didn't start carrying the crusader book around until way late, I think Hlorb took a weirdly long time to hit 4% failure? Or I just didn't want to expand my walking library too much. Though in the end, the strategy there is once you can afford it buy every copy of books you care about you see, put them in storage, then when you recall drop all your books to fit more loot.

I'll do a realm-by-realm breakdown in an additional comment after I've slept, but the gist behind my final loadout is: Sorcery 1&2 is obvious, detection, recharging, identification, teleportation (and teleport other), and of course Haste Self. Daemon 1 for Evil Bless and Hellish Flame, I needed Bless from somewhere, and the only other option is Life 1, whose other useful spells overlap with either Craft 1 or Sorcery 1, which I'm already carrying, plus Hellish Flame is still sort of useful, more on that later. Craft 1 is here for Regeneration and Heroism, plus I don't have to spend an inventory slot on food. Life 2 is of course mandatory, Heal is the single biggest use for Dual Cast and Sense Surroundings fills the one hole Sorcery's detection suite has. I think I saw other people saying glyph is great, but half the times I used it it broke before the start of my next turn, and I move around a lot usually anyway. Trump 2 is amazing, Dimension Door is my new favorite spell, and while Teleport Other usually was enough, Banish saved my ass in the final battle. Also is recall, for the final battle at least, where I carry more than one book for once. Finally, Crusade 2, solely for Holy Orb and Holy Word. Somehow, despite 15% cast rate, Holy Word ended up MVP spell for the run, it's how I survived/cleared the Druj-rooms in The Royal Crypt(though with lots of teleports out of there), and it's how I finished off the Serpent of Chaos!

So, now, Dual Cast. Or rather, Double Magic. I'm a fan of the class in Final Fantasy (and now Bravely!) too, okay? Things about Double Magic: either I am insanely lucky, or it bypasses fear checks on whether you can cast or not, and I hope this is intentional because it saved my life more than once and I would be extremely sad if pointing it out got it removed. What Double magic is, is really the ultimate insurance policy, to counter both the capped failure rates and library cutoff for Red Mage and give them a little extra. Very often if I need to heal, I'll hedge with Double Magic; if the first heal fails, I can try again, and if it succeeds, I can multi-task: this is why I care about Hellish Flame and Holy Orb even at endgame. They can contribute some AOE damage to help out, but it's no big deal if my heal fails and I need to spend the second cast on healing again. I actually ran Daemon 2 right up until the final battle to add Plasma Bolt for stunning and Nether Ball for non-Good non-Evil targets, but I needed the inventory space to fit all the consumables I wanted, and still didn't have quite enough. Finally, when I really need it, Double Magic lets me hedge the 15% fail rate for Holy Word, which is an insanely useful spell when it works; d300 damage is random as hell, but when you want to use it it usually hits everything on screen, plus heals 100. And it is the only way Red Mage has to unconditionally clear huge Poison stacks in a single turn (aside from like, a Life potion I guess), while also recovering and dealing some damage if the thing you're fighting is Evil. I have to wonder what the failure rate is for non-Athena/Shrewd Red Mages and if it's still reasonably castable, also if it could be better if you stacked Shrewd and Athena or not.

So, the final battle. I probably should have lost! First, inventory loadout, ie: is stone skin usually useful here? I couldn't keep it up for the life of me, and eventually just gave up. Should've brought heroism potions instead, fear was kind of a problem and I wasn't expecting the Dispel, SP drain and charge drain to be quite so bad I couldn't keep it up from the spell/rod. I had to focus on Speed first, Heroism/Bless only when the Serpent shifted the terrain to give me a breather. I think I relied too much on that tendency for terrain shifting moving dangers out of my way, especially dangerous uniques: there were a few times I'm pretty sure I'd have been done if Tiamat decided to breathe that turn. I'm also insanely lucky that the Serpent didn't summon anyone I couldn't banish with Teleport Other or Banish until the Babbage Analytical engine literally like 5/6 turns before I won. Whenever I could, Teleport Other in Wand or Spell form was my answer to any unique he summoned, and it just worked. A Holding staff of Confusing Lights was just insanely lucky to find, because stunning anyone and everyone is also probably a lot of what kept me alive. The last 5-6 rounds were the culmination of all of these mistakes; way too many dangerous monsters(the Destroyer got summoned...) in close proximity, everything drained, all I could do was drink *Healing* and Life potions. Until I got a single free turn to drink a Mana Restore, then Double Magic Heal and Banish to send almost everyone (BABBAGE!!!) away, then Double Magic Heal and Holy Word, really just to try and keep up the damage since the Serpent was almost dead, and that was the end. In retrospect, I really should have taken more opportunities to disengage, but after the very start of the fight when I did manage to Destruct a particularly dangerous set(yay telepathy letting me keep the Serpent well out of it, heard about that...), my teleport staff was almost always drained, and it seemed more important to use SP on healing, teleporting dangerous things *away* from me, or multi-tasking a heal and some damage with Holy Word or Fantastic Frenzy (heals off kills from pact, and Vampire brand); especially when Dragons were around, as damaging things that breath so they won't hurt so much is something burned into my brain at this point. I used Genocide only a few times, when particularly dangerous groups showed up (or just to preemptively purge the level of Q's) but overall the chaff was a good thing for me; made it more likely I'd share a border with a relatively harmless thing rather than say Tiamat, and depending if there were enough Fantastic Frenzy could take the place of a low-priority heal or even pay for itself, provided I had the SP to use it anyway. Overall, I'm still amazed I came through in the end, be interested to hear veterans thoughts on this.

Other highlights of the run include almost dying to a summon-swarm in The Vault, when a Teleport landed me right next to friendly Luigi, of all possibilities, who saved my ass and carried me through long enough to hit Level 20 and pick pact solely because it would let me survive the next few minutes, which ended up synergizing extremely well with the eventual Rune Sword vampirism and Fantastic Frenzy decision. Unfortunately I met Luigi again later after the Rune Sword got Aggravate and we sadly had to fight. :(

Also, I just could not find the patience to keep diving and trying to loot vaults and almost dying, without finding anything I could use, so as you can see I just said "Screw it" and spent around 8-9M reforging all my biggest number artifacts until something stuck, you can see a lot of the failures in my house storage. Still baffled how good a bow I got first try though. I was prepared to spend a lot more artifacts on that slot, but nope, Excalibur had me covered.

Anyway, there's a lot more I have to say about Realms as they pertain to Red Mage, and also about the Rune Sword, but I really need to sleep for now, so it will appear later!

No teleself is certainly an atypical approach to the J fight, but without having seen the fight it's impossible to say whether that was an unnecessary risk or a smart and efficient approach made possible by favorable summons. J fights on this type of build (melee primary, no mega-HP) always require some luck in any case; >90% of the time they win, but the chance of unlucky double-moves is impossible to completely eliminate.

Spell Realms according to Red Mage:

*Arcane* - Sorcery but worse. That's really all there is to it. Book 1 you start with and is useful for Zap and Blink, but it will very quickly be replaced by other books, and none of the other 3 are worthwhile compared to Sorcery and/or Trump 2.

*Sorcery* - Pretty straightforward, I don't think anyone expected not to see both of these books in use. Detection, Identification, Recharging, Teleports, Teleport Other, and Haste Self all need no explanation. Mass Stasis is also supposedly good I think? But by the time I had it I also had a Confusing Lights staff. That could be good for a faster leveling character, or maybe I should have tried it as an opener after Dimension Dooring into a group with Double Magic.

*Nature* - The savior of the earlygame. Book 1 has it all: Detection, Food, Lighting, Levitation, a multi-purpose resist element spell, a heal+poison clear, and even Lightning is actually super useful at the start as one of the few always-beam spells.

Book 2 is less impressive to me, Nature Awareness is nice, but Sorcery and Life are mandatory for other reasons and cover it's uses. Entangle is in a similar situation as Mass Stasis, but Nature does have the advantage of becoming castable comparatively quickly for Red Mage and so is more likely useful. Nature's Gate I probably should have experimented with, but after bad experiences with Summon Manes in early runs that died I kinda gave up on summon magic in general, which I should probably revisit at some point.
Summoning probably would've gotten in the way of the eventual powered-by-murder combo of Rune Sword Vampirism + Infernal Deal + Fantastic Frenzy this run used though.

*Craft* - Book 1 is simple, but powerful. Minor Enchantment is Majorly useful in the earlygame, and remains so for a very long time to treat Acid damage, upgrade Ego/Artifact items, and for ammunition. You don't even have to carry the book with you, just enchant your gear before you leave. That said, if you aren't carrying Life 1 anymore it has Regeneration, if you don't want to carry Heroism potions it has you covered, and it can fill gaps in resistances after Nature 1 isn't worth holding onto anymore-or if you need Acid Res. Just overall very useful, if not exciting.

Book 2 on the other hand is not. Remove Curse is in Life 2, and Sorcery 2 does Identify better. Berserk I could see being useful but given Rune Sword I'm already trading defense for offense so I don't need more, someone else may get more use out of that one.

*Trump* - Dimension Door and Banish. That's really it, but those two are so powerful that they absolutely justify carrying Book 2 at all times. It's nice to have Recall available too, and Teleport Level is also here, though I am stubborn about using it.

Book 1 has Phase Door and Teleport at roughly the same levels as Arcane/Sorcery, summons, which I've been over how I should revisit, and Shuffle which will probably murder you. BUT: It has Teleport Other MUCH sooner than Sorcery 2 gets it, so if you need a source of Teleport Other it's worth it. Also Telepathy, which I at first considered not that great when detection is available, but using the Yata Mirror for a long period of time has convinced me could be extremely helpful.

*Life* - Mandatory. Book 1 is great for early survivability, with CLW, Bless, and Regen all available thankfully early. After a while I feel like Nature mostly replaces it since you'll want crucial heals to be in potion form anyway and being able to heal *and* cure poison with one spell is nice, but it should probably be Book Purchase #1 or #2, competing only with Nature 1 and Craft 1.

Book 2: The ability to cast Heal-and-Maybe-Something-Else is central to what makes Double Magic a core feature of the class. It has other uses, but Damage-While-Healing or Two-Attempts-To-Heal are huge ones. Remove Curse and Sense Surroundings are helpful utility, and Fasting was actually great until my Rune Sword got the super-curse and waiting forever became too dangerous - even then, fasting while fighting worked out a few times. Glyph I have heard called useful, but it didn't impress me; often broken the turn I put it up, and I tended to want to move a lot. Maybe I'm missing something there, or should have experimented more.

*Armageddon* - The biggest disappointment, this realm is basically useless to Red Mage. The concept of "All the low level spells!" naturally leads to the idea of taking a number of books from highly specialized realms with the idea that their low spells may reach close to higher spells of more general realms. For Utility and Healing this is absolutely true, but for Offense... no, actually.

Book 1 is all base element bolts or balls; the bolts take too long to get castable, and Hellish Flames/Holy Orb just blow them all out of the water with appropriate targets, plus Hellish Flames comes online at roughly the same time as the ball spells and can't be resisted.

Book 2 I had hopes for: Plasma Bolt for stuns, Gravity Bolt for pulling, Wind Blast for pushing, and Hellstorm for a big AOE - even if it is Fire and so only useful sometimes. However, the position manipulating effects of Gravity and Wind were too inconsistent when I could just use Dimension Door to reposition myself instead, Hellstorm's failure rate never fell below 33%, and Plasma Bolt is also in Daemon 2, a spellbook I had other uses for.

*Daemon* - Most Surprising Realm. I kept expecting this to become obsolete, but its damage spells are solid for Red Mage, and there's just enough utility to complement them. For Book 1, Evil Bless takes over for Bless once Life 1 isn't useful anymore, Magic Missile stays helpful for a surprisingly long time, and Hellish Flame comes online much earlier than Holy Orb.

Book 2 is also actually pretty good - Plasma Bolt is damage+stun, and Nether Ball is the highest-power fixed damage spell I could get working reliably, at 7% fail rate, though it really only saw use against Neutral enemies. Resist Nether was also useful before The Reforgeathon ended with triple nether resistance. I feel like Dominate Demon might be useful to a faster leveling character, but never felt safe trying to work it into things by the time I had it. Summon Demon is just too damn expensive - 121 SP and 28% failure!?

*Chaos* - So close, yet so far. Book 1 has Touch of Confusion and Mana Burst, creating a narrow window in which it is useful to carry around, but Fire Bolt, Fist of Force, and Teleport Self all come in far too late, and once Hellish Flame comes online and supplants Mana Burst there's no longer any reason to carry this over Daemon 1, especially since Sorcery gets self-teleport far sooner.

Book 2 has Word of Destruction, but with 23% fail rate I wasn't willing to trust it. Though given how helpful Holy Word was at 15% that may have been premature. Invoke Logrus is also stuck at 22%, and Sonic Boom just doesn't hurt quite enough, or daze at a high enough rate when Confusing Lights is on the table - so it goes in the same pile as Mass Stasis and Entangle.

*Crusade* - Book 2 is my actual Savior. Holy Orb takes longer than Hellish Flames, but is the Good half of RM's decent damage spells. Judgement Thunder's 250 fixed damage is alright, but at 11% fail and compared to Plasma Bolt's ability to stun it's not great. The real prize here is Holy Word, despite its 15% failure rate it's saved me too many times - which my rant has already covered. Book 2 also contains Sense Unseen and Protection from Evil, good utility spells that I completely forgot existed, whoops.

Book 1 I didn't have much of a use for. Most of what it does other books do better, and while Star Dust is *interesting* it comes in too late. Sanctuary *might* be worthwhile, that could use some testing.

*Death* - Sir Not Appearing In This Run. Which is weird since it's my prefered realm when playing a Rogue. For Book 1, Malediction is The Best Magic Missile, and that plus Undead Resistance got it some play early on, but after that realms with better utility spells took my attention away. Though I was largely discounting Fear spells without the Rogue stabbing bonus, and since Fear messed *me* up a ton towards the end of the run maybe that was a premature judgement. Though Daemon 1 gets Horrify sooner. Stinking Cloud also might have been worth paying more attention to than I did, but I was fine getting enemies into tunnels to Lightning them.

Book 2 has Orb of Entropy, which is earliest to come online compared to cousins Hellish Flame and Holy Orb, but I was leery of carrying a book just for a spell that doesn't work on a lot of enemy types. Vampiric Drain has potential, but for this run the Rune Sword was good enough at killing+draining already. Genocide One and Animate Dead are both spells I should have played with, in retrospect. Animate Dead also has the same surprisingly workable 15% fail rate as Holy Word.

Overall, it's been an interesting experience mixing and matching book setups for each part of the game and even each dungeon or quest sometimes. Going over the list also proves that despite my attempts there's actually still a lot I overlooked. Offensive magic isn't actually useless to Red Mage past the mid-game, but it always wants to be part of something else; a spell like Holy Word, or Double-Casting allowing offense after a successful heal or an opening shot after Dimension Dooring into an engagement before anyone can react. Double Magic is a really crazy ability especially when combined with Heal and/or Dimension Door, though it does really eat through SP. Infernal Deal ended up helping that a lot more than I expected, with Fantastic Frenzy to allow quick killing of chaff my melee was actually quite good at keeping my SP up, it was a combo I stumbled into after picking Infernal Deal to save my life on the spot in a swarm of summons, but it worked out really well.

For Aggravate, if you're clever about positioning yourself enemies can be surprisingly close but incapable of reaching you. Even if you can't play a trick like that, manipulating distance and then teleporting does escape LOS if you go far enough. Dimension Door helped a ton here, when I got it, but really just having Teleport was good enough before I got DD castable.

Then the Ancient Foul Curse. It's funny, but I think the AFC/TY Curse is the reason I finally won this run. It did actually help out with exceptionally timed Earthquakes a time or two, but that's not really what I mean. It nearly killed me a few times, and maybe if I hadn't lucked into Demon Slaying it actually would have, but what it also did was force me to do a better job keeping my focus. Most of my deaths when I've gotten far are due to missing something important because of not paying enough attention, like mistaking an enemy of the same symbol and same/similar color for a different one, or taking a risk when I know I shouldn't but think it's probably safe, but with this hanging over me I knew I really could not afford lapses, so I played better overall.

I actually looked up the Rune Sword source code out of curiosity for how it would grow (and also the code for how TY_CURSE worked, to know what I was in for after it showed up), and noticed something interesting - there's nothing stopping it from getting the same brand twice, in which case you get the "grows more powerful" message but the only thing that happens is the AC penalty goes up. Given how I was able to manage the AC penalty I'm not sure this needs to change, especially considering how offensively powerful they are, but it was a bit disorienting the first time I saw the message and all that changed is my AC went down more.

Overall though, a surprisingly powerful option, and fun to watch grow over time. That all Rune Swords have vampirism really helped get it off the ground, and the synergy with Infernal Pact and Fantastic Frenzy just came together perfectly.

Just a quick addendum, I started another Red Mage to experiment a bit with how a faster leveling Shrewd one works out, and I absolutely did Death 1 a disservice in my Spell Realm breakdown above.

Less things are immune to Black Sleep than I thought, and I had completely forgotten that Horrify also stuns in addition to causing fear, which makes the two of them very useful early on; so Death 1 is a powerful early-game choice.

I expect I'll find similar usefulness in the Entangle/Sonic Boom/Mass Stasis trio when I get to them, but that won't be for a while.
