So, I played this all wrong because melee is all I know and all I'm comfortable playing. Sure, there were the lategame seeker bolt shots for this or that unique, but this was overwhelmingly a "play slow, play stealthily, stick to the plan, and hope everything works out" game. The first problem? Being polymorphed from a half-titan to a high-elf by toxic waste from an aether vortex in the Arena dungeon. Lost 200 HP (750 to 550), 15% life rating, and went on an hourslong quest for !newlife (which put me at sub-100% life rating four times in a row). Second problem? No healing staves prior to character level 50. I know, I know, there's no need to stockpile !healing. But come on, it would've been nice.

Equipment woes: Nothing horrifically serious besides running with gaps for much of the game (confusion, shards, nether tough to fill). Plus scouts have a 4-blow cap, so melee is always a little handicapped no matter what you use. Scouts also have a serious equipment weight restriction (which rises with level but never reaches the standard melee class equivalent), so any body armor before endgame basically had to be sub-12 in weight or the class bonuses are completely negated. And don't even think about 8-weight boots or a 5-weight helm!

The class bonuses themselves? I'd much rather have constant AC rather than overwhelming AC collapse in corridors and a slight bonus out in the open (maxes out at +40 and some spell resistance by endgame, increases with level). I mean, what good is bonus AC in the open against, say, summoners? There's no niche here. And sneak attacks? Not relevant in practice - anything you can sneak up on is going to die in a few hits anyway or is too strong for the extra damage to matter.

However, the utility skills are excellent - stealth, mapping, telepathy(!), all the good stuff. And the capstone skills of the class, which appear to be repurposed demigod talents, allow for non-provoking ranged shots and breath/ranged dodging (the latter being a great insurance policy in the lategame against breathers).

All that said, I don't "get" ranged combat, and to be frank I don't have an interest in that play style because I'm a chump, and picking up bolts and arrows isn't my idea of fun. So like many a clever adventurer, I resorted to wands for the late-late game stuff, including J. I think it was in the spirit of the scout's focus on a ranged combat, don't you? But I didn't beat J before tearing through most of the unique list to make absolutely, positively sure I wouldn't screw up this class again.

So where are we at? Win rate: An acceptable ~3.5%. Post-level 25 win rate: A descending ~12.6%. Until next time.
