What a goofy game this turned out to be.

Starting as an archon wild talent, I got through the early game with the trusty android-like blasty abilities and excellent early wild talent buffs like telepathy and protection from evil. The class's mandatory positive mutations are also really nice - bonus speed, bonus stats, the good stuff. Unfortunately, my initial life rating was around the 100 range to start, and that just wouldn't be acceptable for later on. What !newlife means for wild talents is completely reshuffled abilities - new spells, new mutations, practically a new character.

So, as soon as I acquired a reliable source of holiness, it was !newlife time. Then, a succession of bad life ratings, three or four, before I could settle with 106% around level 40-something. Before that I'd had the pleasure of using some pretty sweet spells like psycho spear and create forest, but going pure spellcaster just wasn't tenable in my eyes even with powerful final spells like darkness storm. Fail rates on darkness storm, for instance, didn't dip below 10% until that final equipment reshuffle I know we all undertake before the Serpent.

Instead, I aimed for a melee setup, and the most important spell to succeed with a melee setup was without a doubt the ninja ability hide in mud - a source of passwall. This get-out-of-jail-free card allowed for breath and manastorm tanking, and it allowed me to stay in the fight most of the time even with an absolutely horrificky 4.5 blow cap. Werewindle and later the Sword of the Dawn were my endgame weapons of choice - really limited selection of weapons this game it seemed, and I kept waiting for a hard-hitter that didn't materialize (also my strength and dex were not where they should've been, and I wore Vilya instead of a combat ring).

But what didn't materialize on offense came through on defense. This is the first time the One Ring dropped off of Sauron, and Vilya dropped quite early, as did the setup needed for outrageously high stealth (Jack's cloak and elvenkind stuff). The only thing that didn't happen was a nice set of late boots: I used the multi-hued centipede ones and later Aragorn's for the entire game. I might've switched boots four times altogether.

Setting equipment aside, the element of this run that makes it extra special is what happened the moment I hit level 50: a new mutation, "chaos gods give you gifts." What did my patron Slortar decide to give me the moment I hit 50? The equivalent of a !newlife, along with a new race.

Archon to skeleton.

So now I would be living the rest of my life as a skeleton. All my setup was changed, and I still had oodles of uniques to take out if I wanted to play it safe until the end. This character started out pretty weak, melee-wise, but now I was positively infirm, with lower HP, inferior stats and skills, and the only saving grace was that I retained hide in mud during the skill reshuffle. So the game went on, and while it was clear there would be no killing of Morgoth or the Unicorn, it turned out there would also be no killing of Nodens or the Destroyer. Believe me, I tried. Sauron was pretty much the upper limit of unique I could beat without resorting to full device/ranged mode as I was compelled for the Serpent.

The Serpent fight wasn't as bad I thought it would be, considering all the dangers I'd had to sidestep. No Nodens, just Morgoth, the Destroyer, Tonberry King, and other miscellaneous summons. Hide in walls vs. the Serpent until they get disintegrated, bust out the darkness storms and disintegration myself, repeat, and that was all it took. Pretty squeaky clean, considering the wildness of this character's life.

And I didn't use !tele level once.

So where are we at? Win rate: An acceptable ~3%. Post-level 25 win rate: A reasonable ~13%. Until next time.

Yeah, I haven't taken advantage of all the custom options so far, especially the half randarts that seemed like it would be a really interesting choice for some characters. But with the new uniques, I could barely clear them with a pumped up rune-sword wielder, which I thought was a decently competitive setup, so I'm almost afraid to even make an attempt with sub-optimal classes like this one. Maybe once I update.
