I should have kept that first possessor, but I wanted a clean record of all my forms in the character dump and that guy would have missed the early game info. What can I say? I'm a perfectionist ...
So, here I am, early on. I could switch to a Warg for early speed, but I seem to recall that they are super weak in melee with just one attack or some such nonsense. I get 5.06 blows at the moment, so I'm pretty sure that's better :)

Things are slowing down quite a bit. I have a few tempting corpses at the moment, but am not sure what I want. Logrus master, Xaren and Ninja are all interesting, as is that damn bat. The latter has +20 speed and passwall and might be used to scum objects and dragon pet corpses in the Dragon's Lair ... If I were a bit bolder. Instead, I think I'll keep my butterfly form and head down to the Lonely Mountain for some stat gain. I tire of trying to track down all the Camelot knights (I think I got all but one anyway).
This is a legitimate damage post with about 400 melee damage. That's really very strong, and a better option than anything else at this point. With all resists too! I guess I'm only really lacking telepathy at this point.

Otherwise, I'll just be at the mercy of the RNG for corpse selection, but there are so many good end game forms and not all of them are uniques.
I'm sad to hear about your ragequitting due to charge drain (and I offered some comments on your Spoof dump). It is indeed an annoying mechanic and basically means that you need to stop using staves and wands in the end game. Or at least to put them down in a (hopefully) safe spot before engaging certain foes. Of course distance players can still use them with care, but us poor melee addicts will suffer. I only use staves of healing and destruction by the time I get to the endgame. The former allows me to preserve potions for the final battles while the latter is useful for setting up and can be employed out of line of sight.
One tactic for charge drain is to only carry one each of what you want to use, and to keep it on 0 charges during a battle. Then, once you teleport to buy time, you can use a scroll of recharging and use up the charges before re-engaging. But in all honesty, I don't think this is really necessary. There is more than enough healing in the game and staves of destruction are so weak compared to scrolls that you'll want to use the latter anyway.
Finally, there are ways to procure immunity to charge drain. I can't remember them all, but there is at least a demigod power you can pick if so inclined. Also, I think some of the demon races have it as do demon warlocks. But not everybody can benefit. Unfortunately, possessors just need to forgo drainable items in the end game. But if this mechanic is a showstopper for you, then you can build characters that are unaffected. But don't other variants and even Vanilla have this? I didn't think it was unique to Heng/Poscheng.
On 13.11.2014 14:45 chris wrote: [CL37:DL54] 07:31
Arena = fast leveling. I did get Ulik's body but I so like the Titan's healing. Plus, after a !NewLife I finally have enough dex to get all 4 blows (while Ulik only has 3).
On 13.11.2014 16:07 debo wrote: Thanks for the comments. I don't really think the mechanic is bad, per say, I just personally hate it because the safest solution is "kill the million chargedraining uniques using potions before fighting the uniquesummoners, and then grind forever to find more potions". The mechanic exists in Vanilla, but
(a) there are just a relatively insane number of lategame uniques that chargedrain in *hengband, whereas vanilla has maybe 3-4 dangerous ones
(b) I don't ever remember uniques being healed from 1* to full health by draining a stack of anything in one turn in Vanilla, which happens basically always in the zangband variants (it seems).
I think chargedraining would be tolerable for me if it didn't heal the monster. It's damaging enough to one's strategy without adding the ridiculous capacity to fullheal a 10000HP unique in one round.
Basically, it seems like this family of variants pushes the player to fighting uniquesummoners in a completely unsafe manner, or spend literally forever grinding for stuff. For some people, I guess this is thrilling, but for a game that takes dozens of hours for a newbie to get to endgame, I didn't like the tedium and/or insane risktaking required to clinch a win. It certainly is blisteringly difficult, though, which I guess is exactly why it attracts a lot of people.
I might give it another go someday, using something not-Lazy :)
On 13.11.2014 17:36 chris wrote: Perhaps your tactics vs summoners are the problem? There are ways to limit summons very effectively. I can offer suggestions if you like.
Players really should never need to grind for potions in any game. In fact, it's quite easy to play most of the game without *Healing* at all, reserving these for the extreme end game or for emergency situations (carry 1 or 2 for emergencies once you hit DL90). I usually find 3x what I need in terms of healing potions without extraordinary efforts so the resources are there. I can't really see making them more common.
As for charge draining, it's a mechanic I inherited, obviously. Carrying a large stack of stuff and getting it drained is something that should happen to you at most once. Carry staves of healing, by all means, but when you see a unique charge drainer (There really aren't that many: about 20 uniques out of 300+), dig out a safe room and drop your goodies before fighting. Do not carry wands of stone to mud or teleport other. You should be using rods by the time charge drainers show up.
On 13.11.2014 17:38 debo wrote: If there is a way to limit summons, I would love to hear it :)
On 13.11.2014 17:45 chris wrote: BTW, I don't mean that last post as any sort of insult. It's just an invitation to re-examine your playstyle if something is not working.
Hengband was a long game to win. The original developers routinely posted winning players that took 40 to 60 hours of gameplay to win, though most posts on oook are considerably quicker in the 20 to 30 hour range. Poscheng is about the same. IOW, it's a long game with lots of unique monsters to face if you are so inclined. But it can be won much more quickly and I know at least one player who routinely wins in the 10 to 15 hour range sometimes even in half that time!
On 13.11.2014 17:51 debo wrote: I didn't take it that way! I'm fully aware that people play and win poscheng all the time, and I've watched people do it on termcast. I know I could win if I tried, I feel like I'm just missing a couple of major things that are making it really not fun for me. If there's a good way to handle summons, I'd love to hear, because I'm basically at a loss on how to fight lategame summoners.
On 13.11.2014 18:42 chris wrote: For summoners, use anti-summoning corridors. If done properly, you can limit their summons to just a single square behind you and basically fight practically 1 on 1. See the attached screenshot called 'Summoners' but you'll have to use your imagination that the orc is actually something dangerous. It only takes a couple of turns to setup for a battle this way and usually limits summoning effectively. It's also quite effective to phase door out of this situation to buy a few turns for !Healing if needed and if you prep some longer corridors.
On 13.11.2014 19:00 chris wrote: For the disintegration breathers, you need to lure them to favorable terrain if possible, but be prepared to react if/when they open things up. This is where the terrain creating scrolls become useful since monsters usually won't summon unless they have line of sight. Forest creation is most common, though I might have made this resource a bit rarer to encourage all players to have some form of distance attack.
Also, occasionally you are fighting a summoner that can follow you when you teleport. Normally, this is an annoying attribute since it limits your ability to escape. But as soon as Nodens is done summoning Bahamut, Raphael and the Unicorn of Order, you can teleport yourself and Nodens will follow you, leaving the summons behind. There are only a few monsters where this is useful, though.
On 13.11.2014 19:03 chris wrote: For the Serpent, I find it best to prep the level before actually engaging in battle. Usually, I recall down with 3 staves of destruction and then teleport around the level removing both nasty monsters and wide open spaces. Vaults can be an asset for the final battle, but they are still risky as dodging earthquake criticals becomes more difficult. Usually, I don't look for vaults for the final battle but other players might.
On 13.11.2014 19:23 chris wrote: Finally, Morgoth and the Serpent only cast spells with 1 in 3 odds, and will generally choose to summon 25% of the time when they cast. I know it sometimes doesn't seem this way, but they really should only be summoning 1 in 12 or so. Of course, when they summon every turn 6 times in a row, it really sucks. But usually you can just weather this storm and eventually things will quiet down.
Which brings up the other side of the summoning coin: Managing summoned monsters. For the Serpent, I usually teleport myself when things get hairy and then start walking back to meet the J halfway. His perception is basically infinite so he will run over to meet you while his summons stay behind. Next time I teleport, I might land near previous summons, and it is only then that I whip out my destruction scrolls to tidy things up. That's why it's a good idea to always kill certain uniques before the final battle in case they do get summoned. Basically, anybody with extended perception or with pass/killwall needs to go (Sauron, Gothmog, Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath, Azathoth) since you'll have a hard time separating them for destruction if they do show up. Oh, and as an aside, Morgoth can be teleported so even if you don't kill him (and I recommend you don't as he is a notorious double manastormer), you can teleport him away and destruct him when the serpent is safely off screen. Ditto with The Destroyer.
Alternatively, if the J summons non-uniques like Cyberdemons, Undead or Dragons, I whip out the ?MassGenocide which usually removes most if not all of them. It wastes a turn, but hey, he just wasted a turn bringing them forth!

>the safest solution is "kill the million chargedraining uniques using potions before fighting the uniquesummoners, and then grind forever to find more potions"
True, but you should be using potions of healing for this purpose. For the final battle you will be upgrading to !*healing* anyway so there is little benefit to preserving !healing. Use 'em up! Generally, I find 50 to 60 !Healing and 20 to 30 !*Healing* in a game (This is a guess, and now that we have stat tracking you'll be able to call me a liar!). This is plenty. I use staves of healing once available until I get to charge draining uniques, and for these I use up !healing only (or perhaps one or two *healing* if I'm lazy). Oberon deserves a handful of *healing* though, but that leaves plenty for the J. Use !healing in the final battle only after teleporting away from his summons (remember those?) when you can afford 2 turns to regain hp. Use !*healing* against the J when you want/need to stand next to him to continue fighting. I usually *heal* whenever my hp enter the 600 range.
Also, don't overlook !curing in certain situations. If you just teleported away then its no big deal to quaff a dozen of these: They heal 50hp a pop. But don't do this for the big boys as it wastes too many turns (e.g. It's OK vs. Loki but not vs Oberon). You will probably find about 100 !Curing in a game.

Kenshirou was a tough draw for a DL56 quest, but my Titan managed (I just had to watch my stun level). The reward was a nice corpse. Not quite what it used to be, but still pretty sweet. I do miss the Titan healing, though ...

This form rocks! The stunning effects really give a monkish feel. Though the low AC is a bit of a drawback and losing 2 equipment slots hurts a bit.

His summons are all fairly close to his speed, so it was hard to separate him from his pack using anything but Genocide. I think this might be doable knowing the TO thing.

Upon request: *RAGE*!!! I can't quite break the 1k damage barrier though. Sigh ... I'll just have to fall back on my double attack for real damage output!
@debo: I certainly thought everything I said was common knowledge. Was it just Morgorth you were having problems with? That is to be expected as he is a (former) boss of the game! For other summoners, limiting to just 1 summon pretty much nerfs this aspect of game play so I'm puzzled if that aspect bothered you much (but vaults, of course, are exceptions as it is harder to control the battle field). In fact, I've been toying with ideas to make uniques behave more intelligently so you can't just lure them to you all the time.

Kenshirou is obviously a better form then Mycen, but I was in the mood for a change. Plus, I just made a few monster AI tweaks and decided that playing without a distance attack is not such a good long term prospect (spoiler!). Anyway, Mycen could just barely cover the important resists and I was, frankly, expecting a tad bit more damage from the breaths. But this will do for now.
I also have the Lernean Hydra which somebody needs to use one of these days. The sucker has 6 helmet slots and 6 amulet slots! But the breath types are poor (poison and fear) and the melee is weak, I fear.

BTW, a very good way to deal with charge drainers is to fight from a distance. Iketa is going down ... He's so stunned, he doesn't know how to handle me :)
For next release, I'm making summoning slightly less likely and capping charge drain healing to just 2 stars. But uniques might now employ nastier tactics to compensate!

For *Healing*, it's a good idea to stay at DL80 for a while. Even better if you have the Jewel for clairvoyance. Simply recall and light up the level, then look in map mode (or use ']') to see if anything catches your eye. Kill uniques when you feel like it.
I switched to Gerard since he showed up rather early in the lair. He is my #2 wanted unique, and the only higher monster is Godzilla. I might try that, but I'm concerned by the unusual body type of the Giant Reptile. Probably, it is not worth it. Gerard, on the other hand, has Kill Wall and 0% fail 300hp healing. That's really convenient, though he lacks stackable innate attacks as well as any distance offense. But stealth is pretty good, so I will gather resources a bit while picking off uniques in hopes of something better.

Just turn me into a Nazgul already and be done with it! Oh, I still need a cloak I guess :)
I had a slight mishap vs. The Tarrasque after finding Soulkeeper. Somehow, I shuffled out disenchantment resistance without realizing it! I was wondering how I was taking so much damage, and upon reviewing messages later, I see Amber got slightly tarnished worsening my already poor AC situation. Ah well, at least I didn't die (though I probably deserved it!).
Combat stiffed me a corpse, which is a good thing, I think. Perusing Possessor winners on the ladder I see an inordinate and inexplicable taste for noodles!

The only existing AI options are smart_learn and smart_cheat which don't really make sense for controlling what I added. Way back, there used to be an option called stupid_monsters but I guess that got removed?
I only made changes to Uniques. Really, these guys ought to be special experiences for the player, not just another squishy on the road to victory.
On 15.11.2014 14:31 chris wrote: [CL49:DL84] 14:17
Yeah, Godzilla wasn't worth it. He lacks spell points so must pay for all breaths with hp and the costs per breath were a tad too high. Plus, very few equipment slots.
So, having spammed Caldarm for Locke Clones, I was prepared with a fallback plan anyway. My AC went from 144 with Gerard to a staggering 222! Plus, I have some distance offense now and keep my beloved healing power. But I lose some HP and some melee damage output.
On 15.11.2014 18:43 chris wrote: [CL50:DL94] 15:37
Here's my endgame charge drainer kit: staves of healing and destruction. Everything else is rods, and if I see a unique drainer, I put down my staves. Everybody else I just fight and suck up drained charges. In practice, I haven't been needing the staves of healing at all, but I think that will change as I meet a higher caliber of uniques in the depths of R'lyeh. Well, I just offed Yog-Sothoth with next to no effort, so maybe not :)
Wahha also failed to deliver, so I'm not sure what my end game corpse will be. Probably, the Clone of Locke is good enough.

I'd really like to see people winning with Cerberus or Bahamut or other true monster forms than humanoids all the time. But I just never could get myself to give up the humanoid body with all of my uber gear, much of it found very early on in the game.

Humanoid forms get reduced speed bonuses as well as no AC bonus in general while non-humanoid forms get the full monster speed and an AC bonus to boot. @Hugo: I'm leaving those pesky Olympians for you to deal with :)
On 16.11.2014 10:33 Arjen wrote: No not really, but you can just leave it as it is and see possessing humanoids as a sort of munchkin way to win. Having 1 easy way to the top isn't that bad. You also allow Spectre Berserkers. ;)
As for limiting blows, wouldn't really matter because a lot of the end game humanoids hit harder with their innate attacks than with normal weapons.
