felt like *banding, so dipping into this comp even though I've never played Hellband before...

early ladder submission to point out the nice sword I got very early.... and why the heck is this Robe of the Heavens so valuable??? it must do something more than +1 Stealth...

Edit: now I see, it gives me resists, too

Well, for the record it was a Rapier of Law (+19,+9) that gave me +1 STR and CON and two attacks, and SI, FA, and some nice slays... Finding a ridiculous amount of Excellent items from the dense population of uniques at these levels.

Loving the little history lessons!

On 6.9.2014 04:30 ranger jeff wrote:
and except for it's lack of SI and FA, holy cow this hammer of earthquakes with +4 attack speed! leaving it at home for now...

On 6.9.2014 19:42 ranger jeff wrote:
had swapped the Rapier of Law for an Angelic Sabre +2, but this Dagger of Iscariot looks great!

One bug to report, when 2 Staffs of Speed with 6 charges each got stacked at home, then I picked one up to take with me, it only had 3 charges, and the one still at home then only had 3...

Oh, and took out one guy on the thievery level and his grand master thieves for a TON of experience, but used a lot of resources in the process. Did get the Dagger of Iscariot out of it, but eventually another baddie spawned nearby and with his grand master thieves heading my way I decided it was time to quit the level, had to leave some good loot on the floor, sadly...

posing... just got 5 artifacts from an arena level with a vault, only missing rChaos and sust Dex now, massive armor and both melee and ranged damage!

+13 speed and 490 damage per turn, and a ring swap for rChaos if needed, so beginning to dive

On 7.9.2014 21:14 ranger jeff wrote:
although the Long Sword of Andromalius is a great weapon, having Chaos on a weapon can be annoying, like when you've just about killed something and then it changes into an Iron Lich with full health, or gets teleported away...

Amazing.

You are doing excellent melee and ranged damage and have nice speed equips (better than my character at that level). :) But, I would consider having a permanent chaos resist just in case.

On 8.9.2014 09:06 ranger jeff wrote:
To aggro or not to aggro, that is the question...

Stealth is great with this character, but I feel pretty safe.

Have this helm called "Terror Mask" which, among other things, grants (+25,+25), and aggro. Kept it at home. But now I've found Stormbringer 6d6 (+15,+15)... if you're going to aggro, might as well do it twice!

On 8.9.2014 09:09 ranger jeff wrote:
RoS +10 the other major drop, still letting rChaos slide...

Mephistopheles took a while! But no real danger, just a lot of burnt up scrolls... and like 160,000xp for the job!

Finally got that rChaos with a new helm

new developments, now lack rShards, but wow some nice new kit! Helm, shield, amulet, and gem all new. Killed some everliving Lich for like 300k xp and a couple of those dropped.

Any advice for the endgame???

And not sure if I'm playing this class right, seems to be a lot of summons/pets in this variant, not doing any of that. I'd rather be (modestly) stealthy, and I imagine pets will do nothing but screw that up...

Also I'm guessing speed over 30 doesn't really count for much, so now at +34 base, I can start looking for slay gauntlets, or swap out the measly +3 speed boots for the art boots with +4 STR...

On 9.9.2014 08:48 ranger jeff wrote:
Yeah, +4 STR boots get me +3 to hit and up from +455 damage, and better armor which isn't prone to acid reduction, at the cost of base speed dropping from 34 to 31, fair trade I think.

On 9.9.2014 14:01 debo wrote:
This is zangband-descendent, so the 30-speed rule doesn't really apply here I think.

I looked at edit files and lucifer appears to have something equivalent 55 speed, but apparently movement speed and attack speed are decoupled in hellband?!?! Pretty amazing. His attack speed also seems faster than all other monsters, which I guess is to be expected.

I think I need to take some time to play this variant!

On 9.9.2014 17:37 ranger jeff wrote:
Yes, I'd noticed that move and attack speed are decoupled, and apparently other actions like waiting a turn are also not related to move speed...

just collected -32047 gp worth of rubies...

Another bug/annoyance with hellband, certain artifacts keep coming back over and over again, hogging the drops. I don't need to keep seeing Beatrice's Phial or Terror Mask!!!

Also, fairly major swap. Got rid of the Earl's sword with the Mark of Chaos (which gets realllllly annoying after a while, though the drain life was great.) New sword has major bonuses (boni?) and cuts and slays evil (I'm guessing everything down here is evil...) Since move and attack speed are decoupled, I equipped the ring of Lordly Protection instead of the Speed +10, covers my new rDisenchant gap, and helps take my armor that much higher. But biggest addition, the amulet that grants +3 attack speed!!! Still keeping the other amulet with Immunity to Fire in inventory for the odd one trick pony. Increase in damage is noticeable, more than I'd expected. I'm one-shotting a lot of things that took two-three swings before. Greater Tunnel Dragon down in just about 6 swats just now.

Not too worried about no rShards, diving to 90's now.

also just noticed looking over the dump, says I have an aura of fire, but the cloak description says lightning...

So, that "rumour" about not kissing Lillith on the mouth... now I get it. Toe to toe with her you'll be healing every turn and getting nowhere. Ranged is where it's at.

Unfortunately, I'm in Iron Man mode since a Fallen Seraph burned up "some" of my spellbooks that had the recall spell ("some" = 3 at once... leaving me with none) So unless I find a recall... but hell, just killed Lillith, might as well take on Lucifer?

Guess I was ready after all! 204 AC, 3 *Healing*s at my disposal, became a game of Sleight of Hand away when down under 400hp, heal up and bash him some more. Yay!

I definitely left a LOT of room for someone to get a win with less XP... also was lucky I had one potion of Enlightenment left when I entered the level so I could see where to scoot to.

On 10.9.2014 09:55 ranger jeff wrote:
also, gotta say, as happy as I am about winning in my very first try at his variant.... I think that's down less to my skill and more to the easiness of killing everything. Never encountered a one-shot surprise, which is my usual experience, at some point, with Vanilla... just felt like nothing really very dangerous here. Hard to kill? Yes. So I leave and find something else to kill. But did I ever feel afraid something was going to hunt me down and kill me? No.

Yay? Feels a little hollow compared to my previous wins, as there was so little participation in this comp... Was fun to try this variant, hope the maintainer got some feedback for his work... I understand he's doing a JS port just now.
