So, human archer, shy, because humans among elves, dragons and amberites are an inferior race (:

Anyway, I got CL30 and picked Fleet of Foot. Light of foot, light of heart! Yes, I played DotA :3 I wish there was spear throwing in poscheng... should try centaur ranger some day.
This character is notable for finding my the very first ring of speed (dropped by Azog I think), +7 speed from the ring +6 and an artifact dagger +1 is amazing. Found a whip of Indiana Jones too which allowed me to got into Lonely Mountain but switched to the dagger soon. Anyway I mostly shoot dudes, so melee weapon don't matter that much.

Leveling without ridiculous exp penalty feels amazing.

I saw Japanese statistics for Hengband (it was mentioned somewhere on the forum, they still have it in active development), they have human as the second most popular race (after high elf), if it's due to no exp penalty I wonder why they don't like kobolds, kobolds are decent at melee and have even less exp penalty, poison resistance is nice too. It might be due to flavor reasons though. Possibly their races differ too, I haven't tried because they don't have pre-compiled English version and to compile it myself with borland... brrr.

This character shoots way weaker than my amberite slinger did, still no artifact shooter of any kind and I don't use rings of archery either, also this is just a lowly human after all so no racial archery and stats bonus either. Also this pony is extremely poor. I was forced to rob people around Morivant to afford the dungeon teleport fee more than once during early-mid game and now I am running out of money again, cannot even afford to enchant full stack of missiles (leaving aside 'Sting'), quite possibly I will have to turn off 'good' armors destroy for a bit. I covered all resists though and move quite quickly with +10 speed and fleet of foot (was fun to run past ants to kill one queen of ants after another).

Not sure if CL35 is generally a bit daring for Cloning Pits or not (it seems people usually go there later), but now, when I knew the layout and brought boots of levitation, they went down quite smoothly with several !speed even though I forgot my wand of stone to mud and didn't probably use optimal cleaning strategy. Quests could be more fun (deadly :3) with random layouts.

I'm trying to level to CL38 or 40 for the Old Castle quest, I hope it's enough to complete it.

I'm so mad, I lost arena to iron lich again! I had no chance when he confused me, because arena means no potions or staves to remove it. But it wasn't simply like than, no.

It all began when I picked the armor of demon lord and then accidentally sold it, when I could use that fire immunity to kill Smaug and the iron lich on the arena, I sold it for 10k and the seller asked 123k to buy it back... well I hardly could afford it but bought it back losing all money again.
I put it on and went to kill the lich, it all went smoothly till he having like 1/3 hp confused me. I tried to shoot him confused and used most of my seeker arrows but lost anyway (he didn't even breath fire). Couldn't get arrows back, of course.

I checked my resistances and realized that I had no confusion resistance despite I wore Merry's cloak. I began to investigate further and realized that my non *identified* long bow which I used for a while and became master with long ago actually has -dexterity and -confusion... I didn't realize it before because usually I have 2 sources of +confusion, one of which is my usual armor which i swapped for this fight.

So now I have 400+ gold and also should take spare seeker arrows from home/use skeletons stored for making bolts if I get a good crossbow... and arena loss cannot be improved. And bow, it was my only long bow which wasn't destroyed by auto-pickup (I think I should have tinkered that) so I'm going back to my old short bow of extra might, good bye 60' of range.

Grr, a nexus hound swapped some of my con to int despite nexus resist. Why did I even bother to fight them. I miss that dungeon reset amberite ability, feels so more convenient than rod of recall + Trump Tower. Fleet of foot is infinitely better of course.

I like nether and plasma hounds though, they are like easy bags of exp running in packs :3 Also I tried to open a chest and it filled the whole room, summoned a pack of plasma hounds, a pack of shadow hounds, a pack of earth hounds, a couple of dragons and (I think) a yellow U. Thankfully they didn't breath all together so I teleported, healed, returned, killed them all and when I tried to kill that U (which I thought was a marilich) it breathed at me twice and took 1/2 of my hp and here I realized it was Hastur... I wish I could set a subwindow to show monster list -_-

Anyway, I'm level 40, feel pretty weak, no artifact shooter still and going to dive into the Old Castle because I want some artifact shooter/ Why are they so rarer than melee artifacts. Melee fighters get 'Sting' which they can probably win the game with at one of earlier quests...

On 20.7.2014 05:30 mewmew wrote:
Thinking of my previous comment, Hastur should be blue H... I wonder why I mistook yellow U for him/

Old Castle was hard, especially the entrance because I had no time to rest and recover (and being full constantly engorged myself with !CCW) and hardly could get my arrows back while they just came and came, lesser titans and dracolich forced me to use 2 potions of healing, was rather close, thankfully one lesser titan stuck in a corridor and didn't let two ancient red dragons come at me either so I finally rested (after killing a monastic lich of course) and then cleared the rest without any problem, well except sudden attack by 4 Raal's tome of destruction. May be teleporting at entering would be safer...

My first artifact shooter, yeah! For some reason I thought it was +10 speed, but +5 speed is fine too. Get light crossbows to Expert, didn't master yet, may be I should have used a light crossbow earlier. What's strange, for some reason I have Anti-magic cave marked as 'conquered' when I have no idea how I did it, the boss couldn't be so weak, right?
I will go to complete 1-2 Angband quests and head to Arena next.

I'm such a pack rat, I filled my home completely (:

Found Sword of the Dawn in the Arena, I may feel myself Dorian Hawkmoon :3 But I got used to Sting... And what's more important, Arena isn't the right place to train long swords (and to use melee as an archer at all) and Sting gives some stat bust which make me shoot better. Legion of the Dawn is cool, but I doubt they are that great vs dracoliches etc stuff, and then, won't they steal my exp (Hawkmoon apparently didn't care).

I found a good artifact longbow with a complicated name which I cannot remember (Bele..something) in Haunted House quest which finally (finally!) brought my shooting ~on par what my amberite had with an artifact sling being a few levels lower. But I got used to +5 speed from Brand's crossbow. But the longbow has longer range, shoots stronger vs those who resist fire (like everybody and their mother does) and shoots way faster too... I carry both now but mostly use the bow.

I reached CL45 and have no idea what to do now, I probably can get CL50 on Arena dungeon relatively quick, but I will not be ready for endgame... Probably I will dive
Angband a bit completing level quests and see what happens. Oh, and I have a couple of other DL50 quests which I can complete too.

So, I found a sling of Buckland (it's not even an artifact as I thought) and a longbow of Lothlorien on one floor, strange, but the longbow shoots stronger than that artifact one despite having somehow worse enchantments, it doesn't give resist disecnhantment though (but I have it on some else slot anyway) and has slightly worse to-hit.

Sling was a bit of disappoint, it shoots rather meh and even its fast shooting and +3 speed doesn't save the situation. What's weird, despite I trained skill in slings from Beginner to Master, nothing changed, neither to-hit, nor damage (damage actually got a bit worse :3 well it seems it emulates a series of shots and shows their mean damage that because it may differ when you press Cb several times).

Met a quithug who summoned a bloodthrister whom I mistook for a bloodletter and was very surprised when at first it didn't die from a couple of shots and then I hardly could keep the distance despite being fleet of foot and having +16 speed unhasted :3 It ate a lot of shots before succumbed to them. My character feel so weak... I definitely need better gear.

Santa dropped boots of Feanor! That's amazing, but still, my stats suck (it seems my bow shoot worse each time I check it ><), no of them is sustained, AC is mediocre too and I'm begin to get lost in all these piles of loot.

Also I found a fishingpole and caugh a portuguese man-o-war~ And killed her in a fair fight (I imagine a real fishing looked like that)! :3

I got a scroll of artifact creation (Micro$oft is such an unfun but easy quest while Doom Quest II... I dunno how I would do it in melee) and no blank long bows to apply it on... After I shot a pack of hounds of Tindalos through a huge room and I don't even want to think to pick a shortbow again.

Went to Mines and read scrolls of aquirement and of artifact creation. Results were very meh and you can see them in the Museum, a lead-filled mace (Life) and an amulet.

Could easily hit CL50 on Arena, but diving Angband will not be very interesting then, what's the point to kill monsters when their precious exp is wasted? A sudden disadvantage of a fast leveling race :3

Found a shield which sustains my stats, completed quest on 62nd floor (Fiona, she summoned Strygalldwir with her death curse so it was very roleplayish) and dived to 75. Landed on a ridiculous floor once, literally 3 rooms filled with warp demons, shot a couple of them and one greater balrog and then fled deeper. Lost a few seeker arrows so hanging there was my mistake.

I'm rather low on consumables, and devices, also my con is my second lowest stat, lower than my intellect, thanks to that long-ago nexus hound and a terrible luck with !con drops. So, I'm a rather clever archer. Also my life rating is 112/100 which is decent, I suppose. Still use the bow of Lothlorien. A Elbereth Gilthoniel silivren penna miriel! :3

Oh, I didn't even know that completing dungeons gives you stat boost... It shows how absent-minded I am (I wish it gave me confuse resist, lol). So, I cleared a bunch of dungeons and got some points of constitution, sadly not every stat increase increases HP (I dunno why, it's counter-intuitive), at least 3 stat increases, including two last ones, for Layzark and Shooting Star, didn't give me any additional HP. Still I got some HP and items, including my new armor of Isildur which is a bit better than armor of Rohirrim (makes me shoot a bit worse though... my poor shooting). Found 'Big Punch', a funny ADoM reminiscence, it seems it can make a really big punch if you play a mauler, clubmaster or warrior, useless for me though. Found a statue of Bull Gates who is already dead. AFAIK I could summon a second Bull Gates with it? I didn't try though and put it into the Museum.

Oh, I always forget about Camelot. It didn't increase HP either... Also I visited Glass Castle and Anti-melee caves but those neither raise fame nor give stat boosts. Btw, I recall, it's funny, I visited Anti-melee cave for the first time as a shieldmaster (this character is my second time there) and didn't get till very recently why they were named 'anti-melee' because I had no problems bashing people with double shields. This archer had no problems shooting people either.

Yes, the statue if 'shameful'. Also I just realized that not every statue can be used to summon a creature...

Anyway, I completed DL76 quest, killed some uniques and tried my very first reforge. The result as usually was very meh, I turned a wonderful shield of Celegorm (my current is better anyway) into a very bad amulet. I hit CL50 too, hoped to get 1k+ HP at level cap but w/e. Dunno what now, killing uniques with just like ~5-7k hp already needs at least like half of my 99 stack of seeker arrows, how I'm supposed to kill the big nasties... I could make damage on my seeker arrows 150 higher but it would open like 3 resistance holes and I don't see any way to close them all, I can close 2 but it will make the damage just 100 higher (I will need another bow)... Still need better equipment. Oh, and found yet another scroll of aquirement which made crap again.

I dunno, either archers are no damage here or it's me again/ My characters in any roguelike are usually very weak, regardless if they win or not. I recall I won an archer in ToME4 who had the lowest damage ever of any winning roguelike archer on the vault...

On 23.7.2014 17:55 debo wrote:
712 normal damage from ranged and 947 maxHP is pretty darn good. I hate to break it to you but you don't get much stronger than this in Poschengband :) The big uniques are just really stupid ridiculous.

If you're feeling sad, remember that magetypes don't get to do that much damage per projectile, and they have to refill mana besides :) All you have to do is run over your arrows! (I guess they can trash all your ammo by breathing on it when it's on the floor, which is pretty annoying.)

I'm rooting for this guy to be the first archer winner. The sniper gauntlets are good, but hopefully soon you'll find a ring of archery that also gives extra shots. If that stacks your damage ought to get interesting.

Oh, it would be nice, but I don't have much hope... I never played any Angband variant before except ToME4 which isn't even *band anymore.

I found a short bow which seems to shoot a bit stronger and faster than my Lothlorien one, the range is 90' less though.

I actually tried Oberon and well... I lost like 30+ seeker arrows, took one of his stars (just why, isn't he like 10k hp only), used almost all charges in both my healing staves, used -destruction several times and eventually recalled. Tried again, lost 4 !healing and 70+ seeker arrows, used most of healing charges on staves, took 3 stars when he summoned some higher undead, -destruction removed all but an archlich, so I have to teleport, when I found Oberon again he had full stars already. Also I destroyed that archlich but he summoned yet another archlich, demilich and some other nasties as his very last move. So, I have no idea what I should do now. when I cannot even kill Oberon who has like 1/3 of Snake's hit points. My consumables supplies are thin either. I don't even have a second rod of destruction.

I should check youtube for Oberon and Serpent fight or something...

On 24.7.2014 17:01 chris wrote:
Trading shooting range for a bit more damage might be a mistake. I'd definitely stay with the Lothlorien bow myself.

You don't have the resources for The Serpent but you should be able to take Oberon. If fighting from a distance, you need a way to control summons (Try backing into a long straight corridor created with Stone to Mud). He'll still summon, of course, and this will block your archery so you should teleport immediately in this case and set up again.

Never rest when fighting one of the bosses as they regenerate very quickly. Other than that, I'm not sure how the battle went wrong for you. Perhaps you got unlucky with summons?

For the Serpent, you'll want more resources, especially *Healing*, scrolls of destruction, genocide, mass genocide, and at least 3 stacks of seeker arrows.

On 24.7.2014 17:15 chris wrote:
>destruction removed all but an archlich, so I have to teleport, when I found Oberon again he had full stars already

I have to ask: Did you by any chance catch Oberon with that destruction? If so, you should know that that would heal him back to full health.

On 24.7.2014 18:51 mewmew wrote:
Well, I will kill some dudes for their bones (it reminds me one SF story which I read ages ago, about a robot who only needed the phosphate in your bones :3) and try again. I'm a bit worried how I will even gather *healing* for the Serpent.

As for the shooting range, it seems I may have to dig a zig-zag anti-summoning corridor and it will mean shooting him point blank, not sure of his disenchantment attack though (leaving aside charge drain). It sounds lame too...

>If so, you should know that that would heal him back to full health.

Oh, that's rather non-obvious. That's the way he healed both times then.

On 24.7.2014 19:09 chris wrote:
Yeah, destruction removes a monster completely from the current level. But since he is a quest monster, he get's automatically generated someplace else on the level (at full health). If it didn't work this way, you could handle summons rather trivially by just destructing every time which would make the game rather easy.

On 24.7.2014 21:26 mewmew wrote:
Thanks to your advice I killed Oberon relatively easy. Hm, may it be the numbers are wrong and Lothlorien bow is actually stronger?.. I used my only scroll of glyph though, 1 *healing* and 3-4 healing (+ some staff charges), also I lost my only wand of stone to mud (funny, but shops don't sell them that often). He summoned 3 cyberdemons once, I though I could destroy them away not hitting Oberon (he was pretty far, more than 12 tiles away), not sure if I hit him or not, probably I did (what's the range of destruction?), but he luckily wasn't affected, 2 cyberdemons resisted too and both (?) shot me with rockets, I teleported at low hp, cleared yet another battlefield with destruction (learning how to use that stuff properly :3) and killed Oberon. He teleported twice, but I once followed him and second time teleported randomly till I caught him again.

How many consumables do people generally need for Serpent? Since he drains charges using staves aren't an option? How much does he heal from draining a single staff? Like a bit or a lot? I don't have glyphs anymore/ Any advice is appreciated :3

Well, I died to Nodens. Partially it was my mistake due to not understanding the mechanics of teleportation, partially inevitable consequence of hanging on DL99. Drops were terrible too. It's kind of bad that the game doesn't allow you to read the full log on death. So, sudden Nodens teleported me to him and invoked hand of Doom (he probably was hasted too), I teleported away, he followed, I healed and teleported again, he followed again, here I realized I forgot teleport level scrolls at home (not sure if they could save me), I made a mistake here, I should have either tried to destruct him away or to phase door (could he follow phase door? could he follow teleport level? up to what range could he follow the teleportation? eh) but I teleported yet again and was double moved, he summoned uniques (scary but irrelevant) and mana stormed me.

Oh and before that I failed Eric's stronghold quest (that was when I dropped those teleport level scrolls on death). I didn't take stone to mud and destruction refused to work on the quest level, after a few scary moments I was forced to recall, it ruined my fame completely right when I was ready to reforge 'Stormbringer'.

I am not sure if I want to play archers again, the hassle with ammo takes a lot of time and they don't seem to make more damage than melee classes for all that hassle, lots of summoners and fat monsters make them to fight at point blank a lot too, and on top of that it's infinitely easier to find a good melee weapon than a good shooter, even the basic stuff like non-ego long bows to artefact them are rare (and set to auto-squelch by default, lol).

i dropped them at home before entering hoping for a lot of loot... too bad that quest don't even have loot and i forgot to pick them again
