King Duoisi killed as as the Angband 06 Quest Monster and he drops a nice Broad Sword of Westernesse (+2).... Should make the Orc Camp Quest and the Orc Cave an absolute doddle.

Currently using an Ogrillon (not really by choice but best corpse that has dropped for the moment).

I did scum the start for Animus by suiciding him repeatedly until he had a couple of decent wanted uniques (in this case he has Combat Echizen and Wahh-Wahh Man..... Could not seem to get Locke the Superman and decided either of these as guaranteed drops would be good enough.

Hugo - I've seen your possessor that used a Greater Kraken for a long time (which seemed pretty decent) so worst case I may take one of those for a spin down the track.

Back to the party...

Ogrillons are dlvl 16 dudes. You'll be able to level up until char lvl 21. After that, your Ogrillon will stop gaining EXP and you're actually forced to find a monster with a level higher than 16. You'll know the minimum POWER level required for the new monster when you use 'U'.

My favorite strategy is to find a Deep one [dark green 'u'] in the swamp near Angwil, which you could get as soon as you reach char lvl 20, definitely a worthwhile replacement for the Ogrillon when the time comes. IIRC, this is when the minimum POWER level reaches 28 = the same level as the Deep one. Deep ones are fast (+10 Base Speed!) with Fire/Cold/Poison resistance.

Thanks for he info re max level calculation.

I'd already decided that I wanted a Deep One as I looked at lots of Possessor dumps (most of them yours Hugo) and have an idea of what to get. In fact I picked up the Ogrillon in the Swamp just North of Outpost and his bare handed damage was good enough to do Angband 06 Quest so decided to just use him for that.

Now that he's got the Nifty Westerness weapon I'll see if I can pick up a Deep one and then do the mid level quests....

Deep one obtained at Chlvl 19 which was slightly too early to use as possession power was at '26' at that stage. Lizard King used briefly after Ogrillon killed one and that got me to first decent body of Deep One (+8 speed). Lizard King was a relative slow-poke for his kind as he was only +2.

Time to do mid level quests.

No major issues. Had a couple of speed potions and swapped in Archery Ring (+4 to stealth) for Vault quest. Minor hiccup in that last quest when I had a run in with a Zephyr Lord but luckily +19 speed was enough to teleport around and get Sting as the 4th small sword I picked up. I recalled out and left the Zephyr Lord to his own amusement.

Next step is to recall back down to the bottom of Camelot and knock off Arthur for a nice shield and then do the Dark Elven Lord's quest seeing as he's aleady collected the Phial.

After that I'm thinking it might be time to head to the Giant's Hall to get a better body (maybe a Rock Giant or a Lesser Titan).

That melee damage is much more like it (340 combined). If you're going after King Arthur, try finding and killing him first, just to get his Mirror Shield. You'll need it when facing Sir Gawaim and his mana bolts.

What body to use next? This depends on your playstyle. Personally, I'd go for Rock giants because I never get enough of STUNNING monsters and favor quake attacks to push or isolate monsters. Some players (Arjen, clouded) suggest that the Lesser titan is better because of the ability to heal at exceptionally low failure rates. Just be careful at Giant's Hall 40 because its boss is *VERY* nasty and *VERY* for a monster at dlvl 40...Utgard-Loke is his name. STAY AWAY from this dude!!!

Still trucking along. Has a glaring resistance hole with poison which needs to be fixed. He has taken down two Lesser Titans but neither one dropped a corpse. Rock Giant is great with Boulder Throwing as well as carving through rock - Animus does not even miss not having levitation as a result.

Still hoping to upgrade to a Lesser Titan before Cloning Pits. Can't do Cloning Pits without Poison resistance though. He has just found a Ring of Protection [+18] which has Globe of Invulnerability activation but it's at 97-98% failure so it's staying home for now (might come in handy later).

For now he's going to dive a bit deeper in the Dragon's Lair to get better gear (and hopefully pick up poison resistance soon).

Reforged Hammerhand...

Picked up Amber on Dragon's Lair 63 and rejigged kit. Finally got tired of poison res hole and decided to reforge something that wasn't providing much in it's slot. Hammerhand was right on the cusp of what I could reforge with my current fame and I wacked it into a Faenorian Lamp and it neatly picked up some resistances including 'Poison' - yay. I do still have one hole because Thrain has given way to Amber (nether) but I can live with that for the moment. Time to look at Cloning Pits very soon. Would like to have slight better stealth than 'Excellent' so might hold off for a little while (but not too much longer I think). Amber activation is 40% fail but should still save on resources. Damage has gone down as as I've replaced ring of combat to achieve double disenchant. We'll see how we go. Hopefully I can level faster now and maybe even pick up a better body. Where are you Titans?

Changed my mind on wearing Amber. Instead left Thrain in which covers all resistances and allows me to also put in combat ring (+14 damage) and still have double disenchant resist. Will carry Amber as a swap for activation if required but I think this is much better setup as damage is alot better and all resistances are covered.

No real issues. Picked up randart shield R'yleh which goes into kit. Also got Celegorm, Grayswandir, Glaive of Pain, Black Arrow of Bard and Aegis Fang. Reward for the Quest was secondary one of Boots of Flora.

Only change to kit is to put in randart shield as it covers Nether res hole nicely.

Also took down Hastur as Angband 50 quest monster just prior to doing the Cloning Pits and taking him down took more resources than the Cloning Pits - lol. In any case - time to go back to the Dragon's Lair and dive some more. Don't want to do the Old Castle Quest with only "Excellent" stealth. Rock Giant will have to hang around until something better comes along. Amber being carried as spare for heal activation at the moment.

Will probably go barehand as he does more damage but wielding Sting at the moment as don't have room in my inventory.

Just going to wield Arthurs Mirror shield and clean up the Raal chamber and then get my reward.

Wis 70
Dex 100
Con 120

I'll take that. Lucky as if it turned bad I'd be quaffing any new potions of New Life if and when I found them (done that with other characters).

I then saw clearly my two Rods of Teleport Other and thankfully this worked on the first attempt....

Decided after that to break up the monotony by undertaking Angband 56 Quest and drew Brand. He was stunned with Boulder throw and was not really a threat but I donned my Anti-Magic Amulet to be sure and duly collected his Light X-Bow. Speed boost greatly accepted.

Has an awesome set of spells: Haste-self, Healing, Mana bolt, PSYCHO SPEAR, Teleport
His HP is definitely much LESS THAN Kronos (main downside, imo)
Speed is mediocre, also

Kronos:
You'd have to wait until much later to find him
Hits for 12d12 damage (the same as the Greater titan)
Set of spells is not nearly as impressive: summon monsters, teleport to, and Healing

Locke > Kronos

Sauron down and that brings a change to Animus's gear. Ringil goes in (as I notice that his spell casting is actually using Charisma!) - Gil Galad goes in as well as it provides a boost to Charisma as well and provides Reflection). Suddenly he goes from 263 mana to 401 and 0% fail on heal (as opposed to 2%) and Globe of invulnerability goes from 36% to 9% fail - much much better. Even though Ringil is not Vorpal (and Crisdurian is) I believe this is a better setup. If I had of known Charisma was important for Echizen I may've been tempted to change stats as he only has 18/70 innate for it but he's maxxed it now with kit anyway. +5 speed from Ringil means his base speed is +42. Staff of speed is staying home now to free up an inventory slot. Time to see if can still improve gear further and get some of the tougher remaining Olympians down.

:-)

I wonder how the rules for base speed work in PosChengband as opposed to Vanilla...in V, there are really limited advantages to upping speed past 30, but in PosChengband there are monsters with truly ridiculous base speeds. Are the gains still incremental? And how does that interact with the random (though weighted) turn ordering?

Athena is down - yay!

Getting closer to knocking them all off. I believe I just have Aphrodite and Hades to knock off - following which Zeus will be knocked off his perch shortly after (hopefully).

Athena required 1 pot of healing and 1 of *healing* as well as activation from Amber. She summoned @4 ultimage magus's which I teleported away. She had me down to 500hps twice and at one point I got hit by soemthing from one or two of the Ultimate Magus's which took me down to 432hp. Overall was relatively safe and good to get her out of the way.

She dropped Axe of the Dwarves.... May reforge it later....

Krayz I'm not sure if having above +30 speed helps but for this battle I happened to pickup a staff of speed so spent most of it hasted at +51 (would've been +52 but was carrying alot of loot).

Damn.... Just realized new setup only has one resist for Acid and I think that's what led to Staff of Magi "disappearing". If I put Thorin in that takes care of that problem. Damage drops a bit but don't want to be going around with single Acid Resistance. Also put in boots of Shiva's Avatar to double up on Nexus although this now means speed is down to base 32... Still ok I think.

Just Zeus to go (next trip down).

Got the perfect setup in a nicely shaped vault and Globe of Invulnerability helped greatly (along with AC of 344).

Echizen rocks!

Hades down and he dropped his Black Clothes - not going to use them though as current kit is better (I think). I've got some of the Olympian Artifacts but none of them are worth using at the moment. Does anyone use them? I've got Hades, Hermes, Artemis's items but they are not worth it when I look at the perma-curse on them. Maybe later.....

Ring of Ages turned up as welll but again doesn't fit currently. Really looking for a Ring of Power and maybe a PDSM? lol.

Time to go to Olympus 99 and complete the dungeon by taking out Zeus.

Mt Olympus conquered!

Zeus tried to summon Olympians several times but there were none to answer the call. Having said that I had to teleport away after landing the killing blow as there are alot of Greater Titans and Undead wandering about now. I have to work my way back to pick up an Amulet that he dropped as I've just now received the message that the level is *special* so I'm assuming it's his artifact drop. Will be picking off the Titans and Greater Undead for the next hour but hopefully it will be worth it.

One Olympian artifact is worth it!

Picked up Zeus's amulet - ended up using destruction a couple of times to clear out most of the mob that was left behind but I made sure I had plenty of margin for error.

I had read a previous character post where a Device-Master was specifically built around this amulet and I'm glad I took the time to go and pick it up as despite the perma-curse it's definitely worth it for Animus as he has 4 Rods of Healing and 2 rods of restoration which were all at 48.4% failure prior to equipping it - now they are all 1.1% which is definitely worth it when you consider it also gives added to hit/damage and res shard etc. The only issue now is I have to think about another anti-magic swap-in device for Amberites (although there aren't many of those left).

Food for thought.

I also picked up the "One Ring" from Carcaroth but I've stored that at home. I probably won't wear it.

Nice kit :)

The only thing I might swap is that ring of Protection which only add triple (or more) resistances. Imo double res for non base elements is plenty and you might like a combat ring +20 damage better.

Ow and maybe Jack, but that depends if you do want superb stealth/searching. (I find having superb stealth isn't that great, stuff will wake up and you will never know when. Kind of Russian Roulette, but with an unknown amount of bullets in the gun).

On 7.5.2014 11:39 sng.god@gmail.com wrote:
Thanks Arjen. I have been trying different gear and wasn't sure about having/needing more than double for non-base. No point having second combat ring as I have Thorin in right hand as was the only way I could cover Acid and not have huge gaps or issues elsewhere (lol - I get immunity this way too) - so the simplest solution is simply to put in ROS +12 in second ring slot and I'm now at base +49 speed.... Staff of Speed can stay at home I think.

This kit won't change unless I get something major (Ring of Power maybe?).

Famous last words. Might be time to dive in Angband.

Scumming Olympus 99 as it's relatively safe now with no Olympians. :-)

Just bumped into a GWADCL and got it down halfway before it summoned 3 special opponents (Master Tonberry, Caldarm the third and Talos) - could not take them all on and could not separate them out so had to destruct them all.

Nevermind - I probably would've stayed with Echizen anyway.

The Unicorn and Nodens are both dead but I had to leave Azriel behind.

Phew.... Had the Unicorn down to one star and it summoned Nodens + some other critters and I had a close call as I had both staffs of Destruction fully drained and Nodens followed me relentlessly to the point where I had no more teleport available (I'm only carrying 7 rods with a view to getting Scrolls for the Serpent later....) - Had to stand and deliver and luckily I was in a corridor so summoning was not too bad..... Luckily I cleaned him up and then managed to finally nail the Unicorn (after a few more goes as it kept teleporting away with 1 or 2 stars left and summoning the odd Sky Drake - aargh... No amazing drops from the Unicorn but at least it's out of the way. Nodens being dead as well is a good thing.

Bit lucky there. Seeing as I didn't have a huge stockpile of resources and still managed to take down Nodens and the Unicorn I'm sure he can handle the Serpent.

Will wait until I hunt down a few more things yet.

:-)

Any monster that follows on teleport can be teleported away. Usually, this is the best answer though sometimes teleportation is good after they spam summoning (They follow, but summons remain).

Nice kit, btw. Speed 35 is enough so there isn't too much point in further boosts. If you plan to melee the serpent, I'm a bit concerned by your accuracy with Ringil. Perhaps lose Thorin and use two handed wielding with two melee rings. Personally, I would use The One Ring for the final battle if I was planning to melee, but it is a risky call. +5 weaponmastery is very nice indeed, as are the elemental immunities (Those auras really hurt). I would *not* use Invulnerability, though. If you haven't noticed yet, there is a really nasty side effect whenever GoI gets dispelled!

On 7.5.2014 15:10 sng.god@gmail.com wrote:
Yeah - I figured 30-35 speed would be enough but if I lose Thorin I only have 1 x resist for Acid.... I've had a couple of goes at trying to work out how to wield Ringil with 2 hands (i.e. lose the shield) for better accuracy and damage but can't seem to do it without covering everything nicely (i.e. double resist base at least + double for others with the odd exception).

Probably just need to start from scratch and not assume some kit is mandatory.

Thanks Chris.

Great variant by the way.

Kit Rejig

Sometimes the simple approach is the best.

I spent alot of time earlier today working through different combinations trying to improve damage and accuracy whilst ensuring that STR/CON and CHA were maxed to take advantage of Echizen's spell casting and maximizing damage, hps and accuracy. I was making the mistake however of assuming some pieces of equipment were untouchable and this was tripping me up.

When I took a step back and realised the main problem was my attachment to my reforged dragon gloves "Grayswandir" I took them off and replaced them with "Fingolfin" which do better damange and they provide the second resist acid needed to make this work.

I believe this is the optimum (or close to) kit for Animus now. Damage has jumped to 757 against Evil with accuracy against AC 175 jumping to 70% (it was 54% before).

I should've done this before taking on all the Olympians, The Unicorn, Nodens etc etc.... All this proves is that Echizen is capable of winning the game as long as the puppet master doesn't screw it up by making bad equipment or inventory choices.

Upgraded to 3.3.0 (will play with Mimic's later). As you've probably all noticed I tend to play one character at a time.

Oberon down without too much fuss or really using any resources. 264 Uniques down and it may be time for the Serpent to feel my wrath. May don the One Ring for that one so I can be truly powerful.

I'm not going to suicide Animus but will just copy his file so I can play new characters with his monster history etc. At some stage I will play him to potentially experiment with some things. Not too fussed if he dies at that point as he's a *WINNER*. Can anybody tell me how many Uniques there are as on my last half a dozen trips to Olympus the Palantir was very rarely showing any Uniques present on the level.

With the changes to Dragons now I feel like I want to play one - not sure what type though....(realm etc) - any suggestions?

Regarding Realms, the choice depends on playstyle. I actually used Armour in the past. I like this choice because it provides a defense buffer = less chance of getting killed.
