You can 'ride' humanoids?!? I claim the Ultimate Magus mount!
On 5.4.2014 21:43 chris wrote: Well, humanoids can 'wear' you, but I guess that amounts to the same thing.
Rings are pure casters with no melee attacks whatsoever. In fact, they can't even move! Their spells come from absorbed jewelry so you'll be riding the random activation code quite a bit. Things aren't balanced yet, but I finally got a stable compile so I figured I'd post an early teaser :)
On 5.4.2014 21:58 chris wrote: Geesh, I'm running thru 'mounts' like crazy. That Novice paladin was good until it got one shotted by a Giant slug. After that, I've gone thru 4 or 5 additional ring-bearers. This yeek has +2 speed, so we'll see just how long he can last.
On 5.4.2014 21:59 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote: Now, this Ring monster race is *VERY* interesting!!!!!!

Another 10 to 12 mounts destroyed. Man, nothing at this depth has any stamina at all.

Good start so far :)

My Lizard king threw me away in a fit of disgust during a very dicey battle and, for some reason, refused to be charmed by me. I had to fry him before I died, which was sad. Of course, there are many more Lizard kings in the wild, and I bagged another (+8 speed this time). He wasn't fooled by my mimicry and rather than picking me up, decided to kill me! But this time, my Charm power managed to work on my second attempt. Future stat boosts are going into Charisma, I think.
The early quest rings have been good to me so far and quite a few uniques have dropped rings for me. But I'm still waiting for SI before doing DQI.
On 6.4.2014 01:40 chris wrote: [CL26:DL21] 02:10
I heart tailored drops: Robin Hood just gifted me with Word of Recall (and 1 Economical Mana essence!). Much better than an equipment drop which is currently being autodestroyed.
Azog was no problem, but usage of an un-ided staff (summoning) conjured a Black Knight which I tried to charm, failing 20x or so. A curse was good for 60% of my hp so I prudently gave up.
Lizard king #2 did toss me once, but I managed to recharm the sucker. And while I promised Chr boosts, I couldn't resist just one more Int at CL25 and was pleased with the result (2% fail Lightning Ball).

I took a risk for a better ring bearer in the Anti-melee caves. Laying in wait didn't work, but once again, charm did. Death Knights lust for power, apparently, and are easily tempted.
This class is like the possessor: I don't know what the best options are at each stage of the game just yet. A Lizard king worked well early on but perhaps there was a better option? And at some point I will need to tempt an Angel, I think, as levitation on a 'mount' might be hard to come by otherwise. Probably, I should give some uniques a go as well, but I've been blasting them up to this point. At this stage of the game, I think speed and durability are the best attributes. (And my lizard king nearly died to a basilisk so it was a bit fragile after all.) But for the last "Ring bearer"? I'm going to hope for Sauron, of course ;)

Cast off by my Death Knight, I was too slow and fragile to risk trying to charm him back. So time for a new ring bearer, and so far Brodda is the best I can do! The levels are infested with hounds at this point so it is hard to be picky with mounts.
As an aside, the Anti-melee caves is not a good place for this build as nobody can pick you up!

Really? What about the anti-magic cave?
On 6.4.2014 20:52 chris wrote: Anti-magic caves might be OK, but then you can't use any of your spells!
BTW, I'm redoing the way Glitter works for next version. Currently it leads to overcrowded death trap levels if one is not careful! I should really do a better job of testing ...

As for extra power, getting multiple copies of the effect does help. So does leveling up with most powers. You can also absorb Spell Power to increase the effectiveness of all your spells, though it is rather rare.
On 7.4.2014 00:45 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote: How do I Absorb Spell Power? Where do I find this ability?
On 7.4.2014 00:47 chris wrote: Rings of Wizardry or Amulets of the Magi. Both can come with Spell Power as an attribute, but it doesn't happen very often.

Archie the Archangel tossed me and was uncharmable. A quick source dive revealed that monsters that resist confusion cannot be charmed which is definitely unintended behavior for rings! So much for code re-use.
So, after many more mounts, I charmed an Ivory Monk and began evolving it. It quickly became a mystic, but the next evolution require 10,000xp which was slow going but was completed at last! Next up is the Grand Master Mystic, but that requires 50,000xp. I don't think I can hang back pressing the 's' key for that long! :)
I picked up Breathe Fire and managed to find a use for Berserk. I challenge you on the latter!
On 7.4.2014 02:48 chris wrote: BTW, I'm not sure why I bothered with the Master Mystic. When he throws me, he will be nigh impossible to recharm as he is a DL50 monster! The Mystic threw me twice ...

This also means Combat-Echizen is out of the question...That's NO fun!
On 7.4.2014 04:25 chris wrote: [CL32:36] 06:37
Sometimes losing your mount is a blessing! A Fallen Angel is really nice but the main concern is being instakilled when it decides to discard me. In fact, I gave up the Master mystic for precisely this reason (and have gone thru another 30 or so mounts since ... probably 100 in total all game!). Perhaps I should play it safe and dismiss the angel before it kills me?
On 7.4.2014 14:54 chris wrote: [CL33:DL40] 07:09
Finding progress a bit slow, I decided it was time to increase my danger level. First, I got rid of the Fallen Angel as that guy was just too risky. Instead, I procured a speedy Enchantress which is just perfect (Summoning=Off and Blindness=Confusion which is nice). Then, I stepped it up by moving to the Anti-melee caves!
I know, I know. I bashed this dungeon earlier as inappropriate for a glittering ring. But its just fine for getting tossed (no melee!) and now that Charm is working again, I'm doing OK. 3 tosses so far and I've managed to recharm each time. The Enchantress is DL40 while my power is 75 so I have about a 45% chance of charming. I've been lucky I guess and sooner or later I'll lose her. But ring bearers come and ring bearers go ...
Experience is much quicker here. Hopefully, I can start getting some of the better jewelry too!

Still chugging along around DL40, stockpiling resources, fighting what I can. As a pure caster with no pet melee support (Anti-melee caves), I have to do all the killing myself. Even packs of orcs strain my meager killing powers, and ample teleportation rarely lands me in a restful spot. I've begun stockpiling !Clarity but won't use them just yet. Also, resistant foes are quite annoying though I finally picked up Shard Ball. Prior to that, I nearly too down Lord Borel with Magic Missiles. Had him to 1 star, I did, before he went nutso on the summoning, forcing me to flee.
96k for another essence of Economical Mana. Requiring 7 seems stiff, but with this sort of character, you don't want to make achieving power too easy. Still, the increased jewelry drops are welcome.

Archons make great ring bearers, what with being nearly permanently invulnerable. That just makes me only have to worry about myself dying, which simplifies things.
I just picked up a Sound Bolt, which should be useful for stunning foes. Also, at CL35 it was time to turn off the autodestroyer as gold was getting exceptionally tight.

Both nexus and chaos aren't resisted yet, and either one can one shot me. He also melees for about 300 per round. A DL38 questor? That's crazy ...
A couple turns after entering the level, my Archon threw me down in disgust. Oy!

While walking towards the exit, my bearer revolted, cast me down, and was too much for me to handle (It healed to often and I lacked enough mana to kill it). Bearers should probably not revolt in the town arena!
I got flagged as an Arena loser to boot! Ah, the shame of it all! Will my fame never recover? I seem destined to be remembered as Darnya, Glitterer to Fools!

Things are really picking up thanks to Arjen's increased jewelry detection idea. I risked a vault with 3 pretties, but only recovered one thanks to a nearby Dracolisk. But it had my 3rd Economical Mana essence, so was worth the risk. Elsewhere on the same level was the best protection ring I've seen yet: +25 AC and 8 resists! Crazy!
I've picked up more key powers but, alas, damage output is still less than I would like.
And I found yet another bug. I'll try to slip in yet another release before Debo opens the next comp but I hesitate to do it now since I'm sure I'll find more issues as soon as I do. Sigh, this is getting embarrassing :P

A long time to kill Smaug, but it's hard to get levitation. Finally, a Cherub spawned and I evolved it vs Granite Walls into an Archon (which only took a few minutes ... gotta love innate probing :)
Smaug dropped 6 or 7 pieces of jewelry, but nothing spectacular. I think Dungeon Guardians must have enhanced odds of tailored drops. With that and the stat boost (Charisma!) I'll be doing Icky Caves and Camelot in short order. HP display low, but my speed is superior and monster attacks often avoid me in lieu of my "better half".

If your flying bearer dies while over something needing flight, what happens?
On 9.4.2014 14:28 chris wrote: Hmmm ... sounds like levitation essences are useless, then, which is not what I intended. Since the player is a ring, I think some of its abilities should be passed on to the wearer. Speed already is, and perhaps levitation should as well.
On 9.4.2014 19:02 Nivim wrote: Levitation, free action, rFear, and rConf cover most of the annoying things, although I kinda suspect you want it to follow a pattern of stronger effects taking more essence/bonus to pass anything on to the bearer.
Maybe elemental resists could pass on too if aura's hurt your wearer and you inevitably pick them up eventually (imagine a super lucky/unlucky game where someone gets enough ess before lvl 35 and can only move as far as their bearer has HP).
(Also also, why is searching so hard to get when it doesn't ever seem to matter much? Everyone uses Detection of various kinds anyway.)
