This is a low dex attempt, starting with just 9, which is a bold way to play the Mauler. However, I did roll a decent intrinsic (15) since going lower than 9 net Dex would have been too much, I fear. This will make stat gain easier, but end game will be much, much harder. The Ent gets -6 dex overall so I will be -9 after R/C/P! Yikes!

An early foray into the wild landed a giant red scorpion that I had to fight or die to. I won, but my Str got drained down 5 points or so, forcing me to hang in the wild until my CL10 stat gain (I chose Str for both early gains, of course). Myriad interesting encounters, but a den of thieves finally netted some gold and CL10. Now, it is time to claim my 2 handed flail.

Hrmph! I keep getting ambushed. This time, I was surrounded by orcs and trolls, but decided to extract some revenge after my initial teleport.
With Critical Blow, by 1.09 attacks gets reduced to 1.00, but I generally score a superb hit for 3x + 15 damage (+33 damage overall). 83 damage at this point is just fine :)
I'm heading to Angband (if I can ever get there!) for quests at 6 and 12, hoping for a good find. More likely, however, is I will get enough gold to finish enchanting my lance to +8, +8.
On 31.3.2014 15:52 chris wrote: [CL16:DL12] 00:43
Wutugu was actually a close fight and pushing for the DL12 quest at this point was rather risky (wait for block first at CL17). Both rewards were nice (Cammithrin for FA and some old-school armor of resistance).
Splatter is definitely OP but I'm tempted to leave as is since its stops being useful once the monster hordes thin out. But in the early game it is tremendously useful and offers some tactical advantages (e.g. Use Critical Blow on a weak adjacent monster you know you can one shot to splatter a more difficult foe like Azog).
While I'm playing, I think I'll redo criticals a bit as the difference between some of the crits was nigh undetectable (e.g. Superb for 3x+15 vs *GREAT* for 3x+20). I think crits should just give multipliers, not damage boosts, so Superb is now just 3x but *GREAT* is 3.5x. Of course, this benefits The Mauler but should encourage heavier weapons over all.

I was having trouble with Azog trying to stun him and then smash with critical blow. I failed a Teleport at one point and took 120 or so melee damage for my troubles. Down to just 20hp and Terrified, I had no options but to try teleport again, and landed next to a pack of DE Warlocks (Fortunately, they were sleeping!)
Finally, I noticed Knockback in my power list, and that handled Azog quite easily, giving me time to quaff !CCW until he returned. Double stat boost for my troubles and I sunk them both into Con (Though, of course, Dex would have been a better place!)
Another Mauler Tip: Use reforging early on. Since suitable weapons are so hard to find, any crap reforge on a lance will be quite beneficial. I should probably go do this next, in fact, but I lack the required 100k gp (I spent 30k for this great hammer!).
On 31.3.2014 17:47 chris wrote: After recall, the BM stocked a Heavy Lance. If 30lbs is good, 40lbs is (exponentially) better. That changes my reforging plans (after depleting my gold once again) since I don't want to waste a weak reforge on a HL and an ordinary lance will probably end up weaker even as an artifact.
Attacks down to 1.07 though ...

Stat gain in the Giant's Hall. I figure I can survive this deep, provided I am careful. At the moment, Archviles are a big risk (1 round took me down to 170hp!) but that's partly my fault as I am insisting on these frosty gauntlets (in lieu of Cambeleg, its FA, and an amulet of fire resist). Damage is quite good with just one blow, and a *GREAT* hit lands for 254 damage on average (Superb is only 226). That assumes the cold brand works, of course!
On 31.3.2014 20:22 chris wrote: [CL30:DL34] 03:53
A couple !Wis and an !Int so far. Ah well, sometimes finding (relevant) stat potions takes time. In the meantime, I plunked down 110k for a defender ring and just found Thranduil. That made me smile :)
Cold damage is 185 but with just 1.22 attacks, I have a looong power curve yet to climb. And even so, this is plenty of damage for this stage in the game.
A *GREAT* Crushing Blow with my cold brand can do an amazing amount of damage, perhaps too much. But this should only happen less than 10% of the time I try it (20% of the time should stack a critical blow, but I'm guessing *GREAT*s aren't so common with just a 40lb weapon).
On 31.3.2014 20:25 chris wrote: @debo: I'm surprised you don't find splatter useful. For me, it is probably my favorite early to mid game ability in the entire game.

Ughh ... This is really going to try my patience. I was fighting in a darkened room, building speed counters with splatter during a killing spree, when suddenly I noticed I was only getting a single attack. Lighting the room revealed a wierd fume and me with no nexus resistance and a once again pitiful dexterity. Sigh.
I tried rescrambling with a pack of nexus hounds and managed to swap Int and Chr before I thought better of it. As is, I am still playable, but if that 12 intrinsic lands on my strength, then it really is game over.
So, how long to find 10 or so potions of dex? I'll leave the vapor quest open as a last resort ...
On 1.4.2014 13:38 chris wrote: BTW, my melee was up to 330 per round normal damage when this happened, so it is quite a let down. Sigh ...

CL35 stat boost went to dex, of course, and doubled me up from 12->14 intrinsic (1.09 blows per round!). So that helps. I'm also trolling towns and if I do get too frustrated, I will indeed spam nexus in the Vapor quest. I'm too weak for any more dungeon guardians, though. Not even King Arthur, I fear ...
On 1.4.2014 14:02 debo wrote: I think diminishing the odds of it happening almost makes it worse, because you have basically no chance of sitting there and letting yourself get chainscrambled back to something normal. Killing spree increases your speed as you kill dudes? OMG that sounds amazing. I want to try that with splatter and a roomful of kamikaze yeeks :D
Maybe I should play a mauler past CL30!!
On 1.4.2014 15:50 chris wrote: Killing spree works well with splatter provided there are enough weak monsters nearby to supercharge your speed counter. Later on, you probably will need a staff of speed for more reliable haste.
Splatter can also be used as a very powerful mana storm (full ~1000 dam in radius 2 ball) if you use it correctly (and if the situation is just right). You can also use it to gain slay damage against an opponent that otherwise would resist your slay (again, if you use it correctly and if the situation is just right). For weak mob clearing, you can use Scatter to splatter 8 foes at once, albeit with weak damage this time, but potentially clearing 30 monsters or so in a single move. And, of course, it is nice for handling foes with nasty touch attacks (disenchant, permanent stat drain, etc.).
On 1.4.2014 15:53 chris wrote: [CL37:DL60 ?Acq] 08:28
!Augmentation gave another +2 dex, so I'm making a come back. I'm still using my special blows, however, seeking out ancient dragons that don't resist cold. At this point, criticals are common enough to warrant attempts at a Crushing Blow. I can nearly one shot 1000 hp dragons this way, provided I am lucky! But Critical Blow still gives more reliable killing power.
To pass the time, I reforged my Heavy Lance knowing full well it would not work too well (500k gp). Hoping for a decent slay, all I managed was +1 con. Still, it's better than nothing :)

Instead, every foe touched by the splatter takes the full damage.
You need to combo it. With Crushing Blow and the right weapon as well as a lucky critical, you can get up to 1000 damage in a single strike without too much trouble. Of course, Crushing Blow misses about 30% of the time, and criticals might only happen 30%-40% of the time in the end game (much less early on), and you also may fail to kill your target so you need a bit of luck. Still, it makes for satisfying moments on occasion :)

Terror Mask, Brand, Trickery with Telepathy and a nice pair of thief gloves (+5 dex) have me feeling a little better. Somehow, I've nudged attacks up to 2.60 and Dex all the way to 18/102! I can still NewLife for +2 dex in a pinch (too risky with only 3 !NewLife). Also, I suppose I can hope for Tulkas later on, and the Palantir should show up sooner for a +3 dex amulet. I'm also half tempted to use Shiva's boots. At this stage in the game, I would be fast enough with _Speed (+9+10).

50 !Speed is pretty normal. I don't use them, they come in stacks, and I also trolled the BMs forever with this guy after that unfortunate nexus scramble. Most of my characters end up with 100 or so for the Serpent.
As for the Glaive, making it heavy would be interesting. I'll have to think on it. Of course, once weapons get up to mauler weights (over 40lbs) then no other class can/wants to use them. Of course, I've been told the Mauler needs more weapon options (Did you notice that dice boosted weapons get a weight boost as well?)
Finally, I just picked up Tonbo giri, which is a slight downgrade. But, it has resist base and +3 dex, has a couple useful slays (humans, giants) and allows me to forgo my thief gloves for an electric brand. With the brand, I'm actually doing more damage then my hammer was!
So really, this is my last post for a bit :)

As for Olympians, I'll try to remember an attempt, but I'm still too weak, even at CL50. The main problem at the moment is fear resistance, though I did manage Tiamat with !Heroism (and a Heavy Lance of Gondolin!). Still, I was generally scared the entire battle so I need more Charisma and another source of fear resistance first.
I did the !NewLife with only 4 potions and the second one came up with an improved life rating (97% -> 103%) as well as an 18/120 cap for dex. That's good enough for me! Afterwards, Tiamat dropped Fingolfin so my branding days are over, I fear. Now I need a better weapon with slay evil ... I'll settle for a Pattern/Trump Heavy Lance.

Hera, Hades, Athena and Zeus remain. I could do Hades if I put my mind to it, I think. But it would require sinking non-renewable consumables into the fight (He is the only evil Olympian, btw).
I was using Khazad-dum for a while but had to relent as the Olympians are impossible without 2 sources of resist fear. Ares kept me perma-terrified when I tried! And Hephaestus did drop his hammer but I'm thinking its just a tad too light for me. I have a Kill Evil great hammer in my collection to test with and damage is only 688 (but Hephaestus as an extra +1d). However, it will cost 10Mgp to enchant it, and I don't have patience for that ;P

I easily bested the babble for ?Art #2, and rather than trying in vein for an uber weapon, I enhanced my dragon gloves instead: The Set of Dragon Gloves 'Barkbash' [4,+17] (+3 to stealth) {StDxSl;ElFiCoPoLiShBlCf;FaLv(St}. All those resistances were present to begin with but picking up +3StDxSl is very nice. Heck, I even need the levitation :)
Time for another break. At this point in the game I'm usually tempted to just teleport level down to Angband 98 and finish things up. However, there are still 3 Olympians alive and I should at least give Zeus a go (I have two sources of *El). Hades I can also take, but I'm not sure about Athena. I just picked up Big Punch, which I will use for a tad more damage than Khazad-dum but more for the huge AC bonus with the Block technique (something like +100 AC for an 80lb weapon). Also, my critical multiplier is showing as 3.17x which means I probably land a crit almost every blow!
I haven't done too many high level maulers, and I must confess to not using splatter at this point very much. With Drain, Tunnel, Block and Maul, it is hard for me to try some subtle trickery with splatter. Although it was nice for Ungoliant who kept spamming Phase Spiders and it gets used as a keystroke saver for quickly dispatching packs of weak foes. I guess Knockout Blow is the only Mauler talent I never really used.
I'd be open to some design changes to make the single strike talents more appealing. They were good fun back when I only had a single blow anyway, but now even Crushing Blow is not worth the risk since going from 3 blows (or even 2.71) to 1 just about outdoes the bonus.
Maulers were designed before extra attacks got nerfed and one of their restrictions was that they can never gain extra blows from equipment. But now this restriction is largely removed and I'm wondering if they aren't a bit on the strong side. Also, the original design had a Death Blow technique that gave a force brand (powered by speed counters) which was fun, but was *way* too powerful (e.g. Maulers with 3k damage!). Perhaps if maulers got even fewer blows this could be reinstated and would have the bonus of making the single strike techniques more relevant in the end game?

Once, the priests of Hades were charged with weighing/converting currency.
I only used Knockout some three times against Azog before stopping. That said, I didn't survive much past that point, so perhaps I would have (mistakenly?) used it more.
I like the idea of Maulers having only 1 blow/round, but then for the sake of ease of use, I'd prefer to choose the mode of their attack rather than recasting every round.
