(clevel:27, dlevel:31) Poking around with this nifty new (to me, anyway) variant. Just sticking with something fairly conventional to get my feet wet, but the various monster options are intriguing.

For the time being, I have a good feeling about this guy. His first 20 or so levels were like pulling teeth thanks to horrible drops (plus I'm sure I'm playing horribly) which is generally a good sign for the future. Along with me playing it safe, he's doing everything kinda late which is probably why he's not dead yet.

Then the pattern battle axe, that amazing randart crossbow presented itself, and then Aglarang (thanks to the arena Acquisition scroll used in the Mine. Which wasn't entirely costless as it took a few attempts to read it safely and it looks like Silver Chariot was on one of those levels).

Anyway, having fun so far.

(clevel:33, dlevel:51) Went into the level 44 and 50 levels all set with my staves of Starlight, ready to beat Thuringwethel to a pulp, but instead drew Fafner and Anselm. Doubled resists turn Fafner into a kitten, but Anselm is kinda scary if you're lacking rDark, rNether, and rDisenchant. Dark and Nether I figured Slasher had enough health to survive and recover from, but the repeated melee disenchant hits were going to beat the holy h**l out of Slasher's gear but there was nothing to do about it.

Except ID that unknown ring sitting on the ground in the room before Anselm, and discover its a ring of rDisenchant! Score!

As expected Anselm tossed a couple Darkness Storms and Nether bolts which hurt, but he only casts 1 in 5 turns and has a bunch of spells to pick from. The odds of getting hit by two nasty ones in a row really was pretty slim and it didn't end up happening. Trading melee with him in an anti-summoning corridor ended up working out pretty well for Slasher.

Parade of amazing launchers continues with Brand. Fafner dropped Buckland which I grudgingly upgraded to (lost a fair bit of ranged stopping power with that trade, but it was too good to pass up), and went through the same process with Brand. Also got Celegorm which doesn't appear to cost him anything by wielding. Either shields cost you very little to use or Aglarang has been pure 1h all this time and I'm a freaking idiot assuming he was using it two-handed for the last however many levels its been.

(clevel:38, dlevel:61) Got that amazing armor, knocked off a few more dungeon guardians, plus a bunch of decent mid-range uniques, so after all that under his belt (plus reaching level 38) he was on the bottom level of the Castle and I was thinking about how to take on Kenshirou and Layzark when it occurred to me Slasher was indeed probably more than ready to hit the Cloning Pits.

And he hit them pretty darn hard. Absolutely destroyed the place with all the various clones getting off collectively two summons (both Queen Ants). Toughest side monster was a pack of Inertia Hounds which weren't a problem. Had to use a half-dozen or so CCW potions against the only thing that actually did real damage to him: the one Fasolt that got away. Didn't have levitate and that Fasolt stood back across a chasm and chucked boulders. Those things *hurt*.

Giants chucking boulders is probably up there with the low health fear system in terms of biggest changes to how I approach fights. I assume the boulders act like a breath weapon based on maybe rShards, but those things really sting.

Biggest running problem in the game, however, has been horrible potion accessibility. Poor Slasher is just starving for CCW potions most of the time and I've started having him carry around CSW potions as well. Heroism isn't as bad because he doesn't use as many when they're needed but they've been in tight supply as well. Slightly more generous store generation rates of CCW would be nice.

Before moving on, I'd take a trip down to dlvl 35 of Camelot and wipe all the Knights. I would take out Arthur and get the Mirror Shield FIRST, if possible. That way, you can use it to reflect mana bolts from Gawain and some other lunatic Knights.

(clevel:45, dlevel:71) Got Feanor off the Invisible Pink Unicorn which helped enormously. CON is a bit of an issue but the rest of the kit is rounding into end-game shape nicely. Those gloves giving Frost-branding is a nifty idea and makes Aglarang really quite powerful since a surprisingly large number of things still don't have rCold. It'll get swapped for those Cestii of power. Also, that Bronze dragon armor of Eternity is kite amazingly good. Would probably be using it if not for the PDSM.

I did indeed. Cleaned up a few more dungeon bosses including Camelot. Wasn't sure how many knights there were to hunt down so I knocked off 3-4 and moved on. At this point they weren't really much of a threat. Also, I'd already picked up a mirror shield off something else and used it briefly until that Life Matrix one turned up with all its lovely +CON.

(clevel:49, dlevel:81) Failed another dungeon quest which is annoying, but this time I at least gave it a shot. The Yamata has put many of my aspiring mid-level characters into the ground so when that popped up, I didn't even try, just poked around a bit for worthwhile targets and then bailed the instant I caught sight of it. Hunted it down several levels and significant gear upgrades later and it still was a significant fight. Its a one-trick pony, but its a heck of a trick and not to be trifled with.

In the 70s, Azriel was another tough draw. But this time Slasher was in better shape and gave it a good shot, though unsuccessfully. I was able to keep the summons to a minimum, but he and Klingsor (who is much more dangerous than I'd remembered) were buddies and it took some doing to split the two apart. Klingsor especially caused all sorts of trouble with his Call To ability wreaking havoc on my fight set-ups and he did manage to get some summons off. Plus, that Mana Storm stings.

Was able to get them each individually down to 3 stars but with various other monsters interfering and resources dwindling Slasher wasn't able to put either of them away which was frustrating. But then I remembered that pushing on stubbornly in situations like this is how most of my characters end up dying, so I threw in the towel and failed it. Managed to knock of Habu and Santa among others, and some great gear upgrades including Tulkas, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Been using that Pick a lot lately. Doesn't hit quite as hard as Aglarang but its enormous bonuses make it accurate and competitive, plus it maxes out Slasher's CON.

End game has been reached. I've been putting off sorting through the house to optimize his gear a little better, at least until he turns 50. Its going to take a while to figure out.

(clevel:50, dlevel:85) Hit 50 and have been plowing through uniques with abandon while procrastinating overhauling his kit, starting with launcher.

Was shocked to get the scroll of artifact creation as the reward for Doom Quest 2. In the past I've often skipped that quest, but that won't be the case in the future. Conveniently, a diamond edge dropped in the quest (this has been quite a run, even my winners usually never see one of those). Aglarang has served very nicely so far but the opportunity was too good to pass up.

At first I was a little disappointed in the result. +Infravision? Yippee. Free Action? Well, its one of the few things not covered by the PDSM so I guess I wouldn't have to worry about covering it somewhere else anymore. Slay Evil? Ok, that's nice, now we're talking. But that was it, no other enchants.

I mean, I guess that's good. The plusses are good so it probably outdamages Aglarang, right? Wait, why is the Weapon inspect command on the character sheet saying it does crazy high damage? (14d5) baby!

Lost Shudde M'ell's corpse somewhere along the way, so no Justice artifact creation scroll though I'm not sure what I'd use it on. Its possible he might get the arena one still, as he did manage to kill the GWoP (poison needle ftw. Fought the Fenghuang conventionally and just BARELY beat it), but I have no idea at all how he'd kill the Babble. Fastest available shooting launcher and prayer probably, but I'm waiting until the 4th book turns up in case there's a useful spell.

This is my first rogue to ever reach level 50 in any 'band which is kind of surprising, though I can both see why Slasher made it this far but also why I don't play them much.

In terms of dungeon performance, the rogue is pretty strong. Great stealth so he almost always gets to pick his fights and set them up however I want, and while weapon luck has helped out a ton, even with mediocre weapons he's pretty solid offensively. Plus, taking the Burglary spell school has been nice for utility (ID, Mapping, Detect Traps, Teleport, etc). Overall he's broadly capable and versatile. The problem basically comes down to healing. He just doesn't have anything renewable, nor does he have any way of shutting down uniques or otherwise tough opponents (Doomcall being a great example).

So Slasher gets to pick his battle and set the field, he can Haste himself (plus 2 activations for it), and he can open with a backstab. But once the fight is on, he's got nothing to keep himself up except potions. He's saving the good ones for Oberon and The Serpent, and the stores are crappy about keeping CCW in stock. He had a staff of healing for a while which was fantastic, but it blew up during a recharge. The rod of healing from the GWoP has been great but its cooldown is so long its one use/fight. If he runs into more than 1 or 2 uniques on a level that are a real fight, he sometimes has to run because he can't recover fast enough. And he sometimes has trouble outlasting higher health uniques which can wear him down and CCW doesn't really cut it against Cantoras' damage output.

But overall things are going well. He picks off what he can kill and plays it safe when things get dicey. Working so far!

In this world of limited CCW, have you ever tried Rods of Drain Life? They're not all that common, but my rogue gradually accumulated a stack, and they help keep me topped up in long battles, with 80hp and quite a fast recharge time. Of course, Rods of Healing are still superior.

The problem with the rods of drain life is that they can't really replace CCWs because I mostly use those when not directly in combat but I expect Slasher to be fighting something soon (or want to get back to something before it regens too much). The CCWs really just serve to greatly accelerate his natural healing. So, Rods of Drain life would indeed do the same thing, but only if he can find a pack of trolls or something to fight while he's recovering. This is also why CSW are useful because they are able to do the same job, just not as well (they also give an easy "first thing to drop" when inventory gets tight).

Used the Stone Mask at level 50, changing him from an Imp to a Vampire. Overall I'm happy with the change but it dropped him all the way down to level 45 so it'll be a while before I post him again.

Imp's XP modifier for leveling is far too generous, imo. The stat allocation isn't bad, you can cast fireballs, and you get rFire and See Invis. Should probably be bumped up a bit.

(clevel:50, dlevel:98) Finally back to level 50. Will probably spend a little more time cleaning up uniques but his kit is basically set at this point, or so I'd kinda figured until Mephistophiles dropped his gloves which are essentially a pair of artifact gloves of Genji.

After all this time should he swap over to dual-wielding? Persistence and his track record say "no", but he does still have a defensive gap which worries me and that's rLight. He's got it once so no insta-kill Sunbursts but another item with it to cut the damage in half would make me feel a whole lot better and I haven't been able to find a piece of armor to add with it that goes with the kit. On the other hand, I hadn't really looked at the weapons when I did that. We'll see.

No, I wasn't wearing the One Ring against the Serpent, as Slasher didn't actually run into Sauron until level 101 after the Serpent was dead. I did, however, bring the Ring of Destruction to the battle with Oberon (seeing as how he lacks rAcid) just in case the level was a good one for it and things got dicey but never ended up actually using it.

Good luck with finding staves of Healing, when they'd blow up he'd typically come across another in short order, let Slasher be pretty stingy with healing consumables. I doubt he used more than 4-5 !Healing the entire way before going after Oberon, and certainly nothing stronger nor any ?Destruction scrolls which, as usual, proved key. Started with 18 ?Destruction which felt like an embarrassment of riches but they were needed.

Oberon really wasn't much of a problem as being at 0 Mana just cut off the detection and self-buffs but Slasher had consumables for all of that.

The first shot at level 100 was perfect. Smallish level with a young white dragon pit and very little else. The Serpent summoned Godzilla and greater Undead lead to a sub-100 health early scare when almost everything attacked at once. Fortunately some teleporting and Destructioning cleared stuff up in short order.

About 2/3 of the way through the Serpent summoned Dungeon Guardians getting Cthulhu and I think Tiamat (which dungeon is she guarding?) plus some minor ones and Cthulhu was a huge pain. He chased me around, breathed on me, summoned his own crap and generally made life difficult. Really wish I'd killed him before. Eventually managed to ?Destruction him away too.

After that it was smooth sailing. Summoning Uniques brought Bolg, and a couple Southerling uniques I'd intentionally left alive earlier which was nicely validating, and the Serpent repeatedly summoned dragons but it wasn't until it was down to 1 star that it managed to get anything I viewed as other than a food source.

Food was actually the biggest running issue during the fight. Fear was never an issue, but that hit to drain emptying your stomach is a *big* pain when you're a vampire and you can't just bite the Serpent. For the most part the Serpent was considerate and would summon 4-5 Ancient Dragons right when Slasher hit Weak, letting him heal a bit and fuel back up. Twice, however, Slasher had to teleport away to pack of Olog I'd tried to leave untouched by the fighting as an emergency food source or risk actually passing out mid-fight which likely would have ended things quickly.

Never found that 4th Burglary book nor even tried the Babble, but now that this is dumped I guess he can go give it a try with One Ring in hand. I don't expect positive results but you never know...

Nope, lost. Got it down to half-health which was better than I expected, though.

Anyway, was a fun run.

Oh, as a final note, he did indeed play around with those gloves of Mephistopheles, but his to-hit against the higher ACs was just way too low. Using Slaugher and the randart shield, fully buffed, I think he hit AC 175 like 67% of the time or so which I figured was good enough.

Dual wielding even katanas (which he has maxed skills on) with high +hit enchants, his chance of hitting AC175 while dual-wielding topped out in the high 20% range which wasn't viable. My guess is it would have worked better with daggers or a Tinythorn/Quickthorn combo or the like, but that would have been a big dent in his damage output and thus kinda counter productive.

You really need to train your dual wielding skills up to be effective. With Mephistopheles gloves, Aglarang and a Diamond Edge, accuracy of 64% and 58% (resp) is possible with a typical end game kit. Swap in Zarcuthra for 55% accuracy, and you see that is a better choice than Aglarang as it does +40% more damage but only costs 9% accuracy, so is about 20% better. (All numbers vs. AC175). Genji is pretty much required to dual wield heavy weapons at the end, but you had that :)

Oh, darn it. Didn't realize dual-wield itself was a skill he could have leveled. I recalled that it had been in Heng, but I browsed through the skill listing and didn't see it so I assumed it had been done away with.

Ah well, can't really complain.
