Damn! +5 stealth cloak from the Orc's quest, and here I really, really hate stealth. Shucks ...

I don't think demons are as strong as angels, except perhaps for the end game. After all, hellfire has long been misappropriated by certain necrophiles when truly, it is a demonic spell. In the meantime, I need to make due with a few fire based attacks and my awesome early game whip of fire (already replaced).

Time to fricassee some orcs :)

Too bad Azog doesn't resist cold. Still, my 20% fail rate and his orcish superspeed allowed him to close in and wallup me down to 116hp, which scared me. But I was able to attack thru my fear and land the killing blow. And I got a very nice weapon for my efforts!!

[CL25:Labyrinth] 02:30
I was all poised to buy a tasty ring of damage +12 (46k) when the magic shop stocked an ESP Evil ring. I couldn't pass that up! But after a couple more trips down, I replenished my gold a bit and by some miracle, the ring of damage was still stocked in the BM. I had to sell *everything* to get it. Well, not quite as I kept my nice Pattern weapon. But all of my rings, my elvish cloak, all of my armor except my resistance. And I barely made it.

Enboldened by my new firepower, I recalled back into the Labyrinth and promptly ran into a Phantom Beast. It double moved (once to get next to me, once to attack) and quickly discarded 50% of my hp. Hmmm... I guess my AC is low now that I sold all my gear :P I'll just teleport away ... Failed and hp mauled down to 30. I wasn't sure I could take him out in melee, so I tried to teleport again and landed in LOS of an Ivory Monk. Now that won't do. Teleport again and land next to cold hounds. I spent every other turn quaffing !CCW and then recalled out to level up a bit in the safety of the Orc Caves.

AC is now repaired of course and I think I am ready for stat gain. Wish me luck :)

[CL30:Barrow Downs] 04:48
Stat gain is going slow and demons level only with great effort. I got very tired of my naked cloak slot and finally braved The Barrow Downs. Oh I was sure I could handle that quest, but The Vault is always a crap shoot, especially for an avowed stealth hater. But Sting was managed in the third chamber (doh!) and no uber nasties were present (Queen Ant). Now, if only there was a quest for Hammerhand ...

I found that elusive quest for Hammerhand. And much much more. Now, my enemies are in shambles and all I find myself wishing for is a single, solitary potion of con.

I'm taking Mjollnir into the heart of giant country. Storm Giants, beware!

I rolled the pits and picked up the uber boots for my troubles. But now, this has me paranoid about disenchantment. Also, my Shambler boots weren't all that shabby by comparison (+4 StrIntDexConChrStl; ElSoPo) but I really need levitation. For some reason, this has been very hard to come by.

GCV on DL40 of The Lonely Mountain: Sky Drake, Gerard, Benedict, Eibra, Great Wyrm of Law, etc., etc. Special Level.

Wow! Now, I opened up against a Drolem which nearly killed me (2 breaths would have, but its double move was breathe followed by melee). That cost me a healing (and a new pair of underwear). I then got the top two rows cleared up until an eye druj that I probably could have taken, but Gerard was waiting in the wings at the start of row three, so I moved to the bottom.

The Great Wyrm of Law woke up and was guarding the second square in the bottom access. Do I risk it? A single shard breath goes for 700 + a deep gash, so figure on 800hp damage if you lack shards. I did, and only had around 600hp anyway, so the point was moot. Actually, this was stupid, since I would also be relying on my 11% fail rod of teleport other to dispose of the dragon, but I risked it anyway. And I didn't get far into the bottom row before Eibra stopped my progress. It was at this point I realized how fantastically stupid facing that Wyrm of Law was. Plus, it had wandered back to the outside of the vault (Forest Level) and was ready to breathe me down should I get sloppy, or unlucky.

I was about to bail when, on checking my inventory, I spied a scroll of destruction. These are precious, so should not be wasted lightly. I was in position to take out Eibra, the Great Wyrm of Law, Gerard, Benedict and about 60% of the vault, including the sweet juicy middle of the GCV (which was extremely well guarded, anyway). I would miss the Sky Drake, but it would stay put anyway, menacing me with terror but otherwise posing nary a threat.

So ... *BAM*. This netted me 4 or 5 more arts, but that 4d6 two-handed sword was just slay animal and I didn't really score much worthwhile (Sacred Knights and *Healing*). Ah, well. Better luck next time.

After this experience, I figured I better step up my game and risk the Dragon's Lair. So far, so good.

Boy, a healing spell would certainly be nice. At the moment, I only use 'Evil Bless' and occasionally 'Plasma Bolt' to deal with annoying vortices. But my melee is strong and I have a very good life rating, so end game hp should be nice if I can make it that long. Plus, demons become resistant to charge drain so a lucky staff of healing might cheer me up. But currently, killing Hell wyrms can be risky even with amazing fire resistance. Drolems and Venom wyrms need to be avoided, and those few Great Wyrms of Many Colors I've seen? No .. freakin' .. way :D

[CL40:Greater Balrog] 10:42
At last! Almost 11 hours and a mere 3.5 Mxp to achieve my first evolution, but it is a big one. HP popped up and now I gain kill wall, fire immunity, resistance to charge drain. Oh, and Brain Smash, but I still can't really use spells. Well, I did take out Fangorn with fireballs once I realized he could melee for 300hp in a single round. And Summon Manes so I could back away from him, but all my sp was only good for about 7 stars off the guy, so I had to finish him off with melee after all.

I just found a Wizard Cloak, which will be my choice for artifacting. Should I do it now? I'm not ready for spellcasting at the moment and I still need Jack for telepathy, though I could swap to Thranduil in a pinch. And despite my name, I'm finding myself appreciating my normally heroic stealth after all. I rarely activate the Stone of War except in well isolated cases where I don't think I will need to activate my staff of healing (i.e., never).

How does a Balrog even exist? 99% of the things in these games are fiction. They are not meant to be taken so seriously.

Close calls against the Mouth of Sauron and against a demon nest loaded with Keepers of Secrets.

For the Mouth, my 8% fail healing activation failed 4 out of 5 times during the fight, and the Mouth took a nasty double move when I was trying in vain to heal at 760hp. That brought me down to 100hp (fortunately he missed that Mana Storm in his spellbook) and necessitated quaffing a !*Healing*.

For the Keepers, I really need more confusion resistance. Their breaths really, really hurt and they are smart about hanging back and splashing me inside of anti-summoning corridors. I've used about 13 healings to kill 7 or so, quite a few of those potions whilst confused. Annoying!

For Demons, might I recommend playing Shrewd rather than Combat or Mighty? At this point in the game, I could really use extra Int as well as -3% spell fail rates. I'm big enough to soak up the loss to life rating, though the decreased Str might be annoying. And the extra device skills would be huge! Still, I can manage an 8% Hellfire should I ever level up all the way, and hopefully that will be enough.

[CL48:Gothmog] 16:06
King of my race!! I wasn't quite ready for Gothmog since my Hellfire was rather unreliable, but I had 18/*** at the time and was in full melee mode. The level began with me fleeing the Unicorn only to land near a rapidly tunneling Balrog King!

The battle went fairly well and let me tell you, Gothmog is no joke. Even with fire immunity, he hits rather hard. He also summons like mad, has a big nether breath, and tunnels with an extra radius, which means you have to fight in the open. I've seen him dish out 600hp in melee with a yawn, so he is fierce. But my Hellfire actually worked flawless for the entire battle, and I would pelt him with this from 1 square away waiting for him to step next to me for melee.

He summoned Cyberdemons, Star-spawns and Greater Undead on half a dozen occasions, so I had to risk teleporting away. I really should have destructed The Unicorn of Order when I had the chance, but fortunately, I never landed near her.

In the wreckage was a big whip of fire, which doesn't really interest me. Also, a suit of PDSM with an insane AC bonus. Now that is rather nice :)

Swapping out Lohengrin leaves me wanting 2 more points of Int. I figure The Jewel and Vilya are what I need, so I'm willing to wait. Heck, I still need to level up a bit anyway!

[CL50:Serpent of Chaos] 18:50
Once I hit L50, I switched to Hellfire mode and never looked back. I had great fun versus Nodens, The Unicorn, Combat-Echizen and Wahha-Man, the Golden all at once (Though not all in LoS at once). Later, I invested a boatload of Restore Mana into The Destroyer and had him down to one star when Sauron showed up. With 3 remaining potions of Restore Mana, it was going to be tight, but I managed to kill them both.

The Serpent was definitely tamer from a distance though I was really really rooting for my Ninja to test him in melee. And when Oberon dropped Vorpal Blade, I was considering a change of tactics, but had grown to used to calling forth those awesome fires from hell!

Only 212 uniques slain, and the only Olympian I dared was Apollo. I was too paranoid about Olympian chain summoning ruining what was my best chance at finally beating this game. Well, I only suffered 4 or 5 promising deaths to pull this one off (including dying to the Serpent once).

Phew! :D

Nice effort :) But if the Kings Item of Gothmog isnt even worth picking up, isn't it too weak to start with? Or was it just your way of playing which rendered it useless?

Anyways grats on killing Gothmog, he already sucked in the latest Chengband. Summoning Hell...
