I started 17 Str, 17 Int and 14 Con. Normally I would push Con for a mage but encumbrance can be crippling, so now I am picking Con for my stat boosts though the benefits are minimal. One needs a certain amount of hp to have a prayer at surviving stat gain and I'm still not there yet. Perhaps L25 and The Labyrinth will embolden me?

A !NewLife gained me an extra 56hp, repairing my paltry ~90% life rating (again!). However, it left me with innate Con of just 18/80, and innate Int of 18/80. Arvedui allows me to handle Great Crystal Drakes without much fear. And Robin Hood puts my mind somewhat at ease regarding the all too common Greater Basilisks and Dracoliches. Still no drolem sightings but I can handle a single breath now, so can relax a bit. I did see Itangast a while back but (wisely?) backed off. Stealth is very nice and was something my giant really could have benefited from.

Overconfidence is rampant, and an Ethereal Dragon shone a light on my fragility. So I guess I better continue to play cautiously until I get a lot more hp. Its frustrating, though, as I keep running from uber vaults on special levels. Really, I've never seen so many vaults, but they are infested with monsters I can't handle (like Yig, for instance).

Breathe Disintegration is awesome, as is Inertia. Mana still fails a bit high so I use Mana Balls almost exclusively (after slowing and sometimes stunning first, of course).

My best advice with mages is level up all the way to 50 at this point in the game. You will need every hp to survive against the deeper uniques so there is just no sense pushing it. Plus, its nice to have your best spells on hand with 0% fail rates. And all resists covered, of course :)

I moved to Mt Olympus which is very difficult. At first, lacking nether resistance, I had some *very* hairy experiences. Actually, by far the worst was when the Witch King summoned Ring-Rangers ... and got all five of them. Oberon got 3 double moves on my despite my +40 speed. In no case did he choose a mana storm but in all cases, he double spelled without bothering to summon. 750hp at once was the best he could manage, so I got lucky.

The Serpent started easy but got extremely tough in the middle. His summoning is just too strong and I left nothing but high level uniques for his enjoyment. He summoned a dozen cyberdemons as well. For about 6 or 7 engagements, I only got a single move before having to bail and destruct like mad, and this feeds into his uber-regeneration. He probably regained 10k hp during this point in the battle, which is rather frustrating indeed. For a guy that spells 1 in 3, I would have expected much less. He got a number of double moves as well, but never enough to kill me. Actually, Oberon was a bit more deadly even though the battle was so much shorter.
