This is my first giant ever, so I this build is completely untested. So far, so good.

To start, I rolled 17 for both Str and Dex and took the best Con as the autoroller generated acceptable characters. I only got about 6 to choose from, and ended up with this guy having 14 Con. That's pretty good.

Next, I bought Scrolls of Teleport, Scrolls of Phase Door, Potions of Cure Serious Wounds and a Lantern with Oil and headed to L1 of Camelot. The early game is fairly difficult and is designed to teach one how to survive early on. So look for isolated monsters, run from Novice Warriors, pay attention to where the stairs are for retreat, and so forth. With only 15hp, even a trap will likely prove deadly (I may need to start buying Scrolls of Trap Detection if they are affordable). Work L1 until you gain a few levels and have at least 30hp. Dig gold if you can (Giant can) and then buy more escape scrolls, more healing potions, as much armor as you can afford and head to L2 of Camelot.

At this point, I completely explore a level or 2 and try to get to atleast 60hp for the Thieve's quest. At that point, I feel a bit more comfortable that this guy will survive a bit longer.

For the Thieve's, simply stay sequestered where they won't be able to surround you and let the thieves come to you. It helps to have spent all your gold beforehand since they will rob you blind otherwise. With my AC of 29 at the time, the quest was no problem. Sometimes it helps to carry Potions of Heroism as well in case the fear code kicks in.

After the Thieve's, I swapped my starting weapon (Executioner's Sword) for the reward long sword since the weight difference gave me a second attack. Accept the Wargs quest and head down to L5 in Camelot. If you can beat the Wargs, you should hit at least L10, have about 100hp and have gained 2 chosen stat boosts. As a giant, I chose Dex for both but didn't get any benefit.

After the Wargs, my pack was relatively empty and I had a Scroll of Recall, so I headed down and explored a couple more levels in Camelot. However, I usually like to move over to The Orc Caves at this point, so after recalling I bought a bunch of food and headed out into the wilderness.

Be sure to press '<' to enter the wilderness "big mode" for moving around. And stay on the paths, too, as you might get a nasty high level monster ambush otherwise.

So I walked from Outpost to Morivant to buy more goodies and recharge my Staff of Perception. And before the orcs, I decided to try my luck at the L6 quest in Angband. On the way, I met Smeagol who died to a barrage of boulders and dropped some stealth boots. My L6 quest was for Hobbes the Tiger who gave a +1 attack weapon, but it was only (+4, +1) and weighs 17lbs. Back at town I paid 3800gp to enchant it to (+4, +2) but I cannot afford those prices, so I'll need to find something better. Preferably something with Free Action and See Invisible.

Now, I'm ready for The Orc Caves where I will hang out until I can kill Azog. Usually this means L25 or so.

So far, I have simply hanging on for dear life! With no means of detecting monsters, no free action, no see invisible, no base resistance, no blindness resistance, no confusion resistance, low armor class, poor damage output ... with all of this, I was simply meat!

I kept bumping into (undetectable) hummerhorns that had already bred out of control.

I kept bumping into Umber Hulks, but got lucky.

I bumped into a nest of Carrions. I can't kill 1 of those let alone 95 at once.

Vaults? Better keep away unless you know what is inside. Too much can just kill you instantly at this point. So I've passed on a couple of those.

Excellent drops? After Smeagol and my L6 quest, I only managed a single Sharpness weapon from Wutugu. I did find a couple of third spellbooks and the Temple stocked a pair of Trump weapons at the same time. I bought the better of the two for 30k which I could just barely afford. So now FA is addressed, but I still need SI (desperately!) as well as resist base, poison and confusion. Lack of blindness resistance is troubling, but I don't think it will kill me unless I get unlucky.

Stat drain? Seems like every trip down is costing me an extra 1k to restore stats. And my third attack is tenuous, constantly being knocked down to just two.

Other essentials at this point are trap detection, illumination, and eventually, monster location. I covered traps with staves until the BM stocked a lucky rod of trap location. For illumination, I am still using staves. These are OK but run out quickly. And monster location has yet to show up though every once in a while I stumble onto a cache of scrolls which tide me over for a minute or two. I don't think I've found a single rod yet.

On the plus side? My boulder toss is quite useful, often stunning my opponent. But it is pricey to pay with hp, so can't be used exclusively. Also, experience is coming somewhat quickly if I can just hold on a bit. At L20 one can find rings of damage but the last time I got close I had to retreat back up a few levels as things were just too hard.

So I'll just focus on staying alive for the time being :)

Are Giants that hard? I'll give it a shot after my Eye. Starting with an Executioner's Sword just sounds awesome enough.

I think giants are average starters, not especially harder than normal. It just took a while for luck to start kicking in is all :)

Ah, yeah. So back to my early game chronicles. Not long after my struggle to stay alive phase, my luck began to turn. First, I found a Ring of Damage +7 and then, a much better Trump weapon with a whopping +15 damage. Early stealth (or lack thereof) was a problem, despite those Smeagol boots, so I decided to do the Orc Caves, which had me slightly nervous. After all, getting surrounded by orcs is not a fun way to go. But my first ?Teleport landed me in great position down in the bottom right quadrant and out of detection range of all but a few weak orcs. So I could step forward, wake up an orc or two with boulders, back up and finish them off. Rinse and repeat 40 times to get them all and the quest was easy. The reward was spectacular: +4 Elven Cloak of Stealth. With my +3 Smeagol boots stealth was now starting to become acceptable.

Back to the Orc Caves and I found my first rod all game: Disarming. OK, but I really want/need Monster Location. Oh wait, another rod in the next room? Monster Location? Yup! That is a huge game changer.

So at this point my melee damage had gone from the mid 40's per round to over 100. With resources, I figured I could take out Azog and managed him without much issue. I used a potion of speed, of course, along with one phase door and a whole bunch of !CCW to recover my hp. Plus, lots of boulders but he didn't stun at all. He also only came with a single Orc Digger and that really helped.

After conquering the orcs, I usually like to do The Labyrinth and this is where my luck really changed. First, I spanked Hagen despite that Frost Giant also closing in. Man, I'm not sure I could have survived a boulder but I really wanted a chance at Hagen's spear. He obliged, and also among the detritus was a shiny ring of speed: +6! Whoa! So I had to lose both my damage rings but going from +0 speed to +9 at this point in the game is phenomenal! And the Minotaur of the Labyrinth was quite the easy kill.

After completing the early quest rounds (Tengus, Mimics, Sewer, DQI) I decided to hang out in the Icky Caves for stat gain. I can't handle the boss yet, and I can't do The Forest either without Poison Resistance. Camelot requires blindness resistance which is a shame since that resistance is usually one of the late ones to show up. Otherwise, I would be tempted to face those knights when it would be more challenging to do so.

Oh, and at some point I grabbed the L12 quest in Angband. The reward was junk but along the way I killed my mate: Nami. She dropped a wonderful rand-art helmet. Perhaps this was her dowry?

The saga continues. I'm still questing for armor of resistance and am even eschewing Gondricam in my stubbornness. Heck, if I have waited this long, then surely I can wait a bit longer. Of course, the shops teased me early on with unaffordable suits of elvenkind, but ever since I had enough gold, have refused to stock anything better than Red Dragon Scale Mail, which I bought for a mere 130k.

At this point in the game, one has a lot of options. Personally, I prefer to hang out and boost my stats a bit. If I had levitation (Gondricam?) then I would hang out in the Lonely Mountain, but actually, I better have resistance for that too (Gondricam??). I'm almost there now that I evolved into a Cloud Giant (electricity) and picked up a lucky shield (acid). I only need cold. But Angband is a fine place to hang out and the only stumbling block is the probable draw of Gachapin for L24. But after I ran into him in the Icky Caves I knew I was safe (I did get GHMMWQ a couple of times, but that is unlikely).

This Chaos weapon was also purchased (107k) and I couldn't pass up the poison resistance which can be hard to get. I finally get a 5th blow as well so damage output is pretty nice for this point in the game.

New Life #1 was eagerly quaffed as Str and Con were 18/80 and Life was 91%. But my hitpoints went down so I'm not sure I benefited. Strength definitely went up however. But a giant scarcely needs too much more strength. I mostly just want to improve my life rating so I'll need to hoard potions, I guess.

The Vault was a game changer for me: Sting, Thranduil, Rohirrim. And Botei-building. And The Queen Ant. The Queen Ant was squatting on Sting, so I had to kill her, but I ran like a scared girl from Botei-building. That guy is nasty!

So now I will give dual wielding a go. I had worked myself to Beginner skill earlier, but the damage output was not as good as single wielding. Even now, I am almost better off single wielding my Chaos Executioner Sword with two hands, but I need Sting for FA and stat boosts. And putting Hagen back in the mix feels good at the moment. But Poison resistance will need to be added sooner rather than later. Probably now actually, but I'll play risky for a little while and see what happens.

I guess my earlier New Life left my Con low and biffed my life rating lower than before :(

I've worked dual wielding up to Skilled, but now I think I'll go back to single wielding. Against AC100, I'm less effective with two weapons than with one and weaker armored folk don't need dual wielding anyway. I'll revisit later with (hopefully) more powerful weapons.

I still want poison resistance. My options are that Chaos sword and some armor (GDSM and High Resistance). Both would require me to swap in Celegorm for resist base. This knocks my single wield damage with Werewindle from 498 to 325 and is a bit much at the moment. What is that, like a 37% biff?

Oh ... My ... God! I swapped in poison resist at last after I found Silver Chariot and headed to the Anti-magic caves where I *immediately* scored a bubble vault. Wow! Somehow I survived the Ultimate Magus that woke up, blinked next to me outside the vault, and walloped me down to 100hp. Oh, I know why. With Anti-magic the only thing it could do was breathe disintegration. So, I risked a teleport other and succeeded.

Next, I had to deal with a Spectral Wyrm that was blocking off about 70% of the vault. "If I only had some destruction", I thought. And checking map mode, wow. There was a scroll of destruction right between me and Mr. I Just Kill You dragon. And scrolls work very reliably, so of course I used that (destructing about 6 excellent items in the process but I didn't want to miss that guy).

The rest of the vault was OK as bubble vaults allow you to skip what you can't handle. But I got careless at the top and unleashed a spellwarp automaton. Yikes. I had to teleport myself at that point, which was risky since that Ultimate Magus was still out there, not to mention all the monster I teleported away. But I made it OK and returned to clear the last part of the vault, leaving that spellwarp alone despite the rather attractive cloak it was guarding.

A very nice take indeed. My first Self Knowledge confirmed low life rating an low Con, so I will continue to insta-quaff New Life potions as (if?) they show up. Aside from that were Slayer, LawDSM, Thalkettoth, Buckland, Lordly Protection, Yeduson, Shadow Cloak of Thievery (+2 dex is *huge*), Grayswandir and some rand-arts, most of which I had to leave behind. Also Life and *Healing* potions.

Now, what was doing? Stat gain? I'm only L32, right?
