Off to a conservative start. Haven't played FA in a while. Forgot how much I hate nighttime wilderness.

Day 2. Having wasted day one exploring the nearby surroundings, I set out just before dawn determined to make the trek to Belgost. I reached the mountains of Eriador just as the sun broke the horizon. I headed due west and it wasn't long before I found a hill orc encampment, luckily they were still asleep and not blocking the main path. As a snuck by, a few orc sentries picked up my trail, and for the first time I realized how unprepared I was for this journey.

A short time later a yeti joined the chase. I had just a step or two on my nearest pursuer as I continued west. I was about half was across when I spotted Brodda on the trail ahead of me. He didn't seem to see me so I tried to sneak by, but he must have been playing opossum and whacked me as I slipped past. A few steps later he attacked me again, stole a few gold coins and disappeared in a puff of smoke. That was lucky, Brodda was hitting pretty hard.

With the orcs and yeti still in pursuit and Brodda nowhere to be found I continued west at which point I encountered Jeff Green the skeleton. Once again, I side stepped my attacker and slipped by taking a few hits in the process. Things were beginning to look grim. I had a bad feeling that Jeff probably knew a few spells and I wasn't feeling so hot to begin with.

I was still being pursued and may well had been killed by the band of misfits had I not stumbled onto that teleport trap. It sent me far east, back to near the hill orc camp. They were still sleeping. Whew. I headed back west again, not deterred by what lie ahead although I didn't know how I was going to deal it. Along the way I made a detour or two in order to collect items and treasures that got overlooked in my previous haste. It was during one of these detours that I rediscovered Brodda.

He was trying to sneak up behind me, but failed and left me with a great line and plentiful distance to work my bow. After a few arrows I found that my recently found wand of stinking cloud was more effective so I used it instead. He was about 50% dead when he reached me, but that was still too strong. I retreated and once sufficiently in a dead end to insure a good result, read my only scroll of phase door. It predictably put me opposite Brodda and I retreated once again, this time to a pile of rubble. Even atop the rubble, the fight was fierce. I seem to recall being down to 1 HP a some point. Eventually Brodda fell and I continued west.

By the time I reached Jeff and company, I was nearly fully healed. Since my wand was empty, I used arrows. The ones that missed Jeff (in the lead) struck the orcs or yeti bringing up the rear. Eventually Jeff closed the distance and was still too strong for me. I retreated. He'd cast a spell every once in a while, trying to scare me, and I'd take the opportunity to launch another arrow. This went on for a while as we moved back to the east.

Somewhere along the way I gained enough XP to be able to cast blink with a 56% fail rate, and did so successfully. It moved me east gaining me room for more archery. Jeff had about 40% health remaining when I decided climb atop some more rubble and attack. I had to do something or else I soon be at the ord encampment once again. Though I missed frequently with my sword, and the remaining orcs eventually turned it into a two on one fight, I prevailed with just a few HP to spare.

The path now seemed to be clear as I hastily headed west once again. I reached Belgost uneventfully, just before sunset. I gathered enough treasure to outfit myself reasonably well. I'll wait for daybreak then head north from here. Hopefully I'll reach the plains by the end of day three and recall from there.

Day 3. Set out before dawn, as I knew that my ambitious goal would be hard to achieve. In the end I failed, but the day was a huge success none the less.

The mountains just north of Belgost stymied me. I had trouble navigating the mountain, and was unable to detect the path to the other side. While wandering I encounter Lug, a hill orc of some repute. The battle with him and his forces became muddled when the lemures joined the fray. I found myself in a tight spot persevered in the end, slaying them all.

Lug had quite a stash hidden in his mountain lair. A small chest and many objects strewn about, many of them {excellent}. After cleaning up that mess, I set about heading north once again, but was distracted by Ulfast. The situation was ripe for an easy kill so I took advantage of it. It turns out that Ulfast held a lamp that I now claim as my own.

Though I eventually found the passage north, the afternoon sun was already setting. With my pack overflowing with sell-ables, I returned to Belgost to lighten my load and re-supply. Tomorrow is another day.

Day 4. Left town in the wee hours of the morning, well before sunrise. So early in fact, that I had traversed the first of the mountain ranges before the sun had a chance to rise.

My progress, unlike yesterday, was swift and precise. My internal compass guided me effortlessly through the jagged trails. It wasn't until late in my journey (lev 25), the sun still high in the afternoon sky, that I ran into a snag.

I couldn't find a passage through despite my new found staff of mapping. I was accosted my all manner of beast the worst of which were a pesky vorpal bunny and Orcogar (and company). Eventually I found my way, and the last leg of the journey took just minutes.

I had so much time before sunset that I took out a pack of cold hounds and did a little exploring before exiting the mountains. Upon my arrival on the plains, I read my word of recall and tried my luck with an ogre mage... who went down easy. Not much treasure this time, but great progress. I fear I may have to grind here for a bit until my experience and equipment catch up with my placement on the map.

Excellent story.

That is probably a Scimitar of Acid - you need to ID any ego once before you get to recognise the type.

Apparently I didn't get a tombstone character dump. Pressing "enter" doesn't default to "y" on the file overwrite confirmation prompt. I seem to recall it happening once before, but it didn't matter because my guy was still alive.

That's right - 'enter'=y is a shop-only thing.
