I heard somewhere that today was HM challenge day, and HM's being my absolute favorite class, I can hardly resist! Of course, I need to pick an easy combo like Chaos with a Hades Demigod. I figure with Unyielding and a good life rating, I can do 1100 or so damage with a single logrus breath. But wait, that is *before* spell power considerations. I'm betting 1600 is very doable!

Now, there is the small matter of the high XP penalty, something that penalizes casters about 10x as much as it does melee folk (since casting requires at least 10x the keystrokes).

Quick start and just as quick, nearly lost. First, my Sewer reward was a rand-art equipped prior to identification. Luckily it was not cursed, boosts con, and gives blindness resist. So the Yeek Caves are optional. Next, Robin Hood dropped a Defender with Poison and Confusion resists so that's everything I need save reflection, I guess. But I got that too! Detection? Well, L12 was special and yielded a 30lb lance. Yuk, I can't wield that, so I sold it only to learn it had ESP evil. And I couldn't buy it back, but that's probably just as well. 45lbs of weaponry is a bit much for a tiny mage. Drop 2 more levels and special again! Yay! Dig some rubble and I am standing toe to toe with a Greater Titan. Seriously. He's right next to me. On level 14! With AC 21. And no shards resist. Crap!!! Fortunately, it was my move and I fled faster than any novice bander has ever done in the history of bands!

On return, the BM stocked a -Detection, so I'm feeling very lucky right about now.

[CL27:Barrow Downs] 02:21
If Hades is good for one thing, and one thing only, it is a quick jump into the Barrow Downs. With high HP, resist nether, hold life and free action all innate, there is really no reason to wait. Unless you feel guilty skipping quests, which I don't (although Sting would be nice for me). With my +0 speed, I had to lean on my lone staff of speed for the emperors, figuring that Arcane Binding could chip in in a pinch. But it wasn't necessary.

Nothing really good other than the fixed hobbit artifacts and 3 !Str. That helped justify my L25 stat boost choice of Con, which occurred prior to any of the stat potion finds. Also, !Chr and !Wis as well as "Int (+4). And a feanorian lamp with +3 int, but I still want that +2 con, blindness resistance sewer lamp. It may still smell a bit off, but its boosts are very key.

Now, Anti-melee? This would be risky but it might be about time. The alternative is to risk the Lonely Mountain.

Chaos HM? Not half as hard as Nature! ;) Although you lack any form of support/healing spells. And yeah, I'm starting to notice the xp penalty of demigods, over 1m exp for one level up. But so worth it.

On 3.9.2012 14:40 chris wrote:
Yes, you are playing challenge while I am playing munchkin! But at least you never had to worry about those pesky Greater Titans hanging out at the top of the Orc Caves ;)

Have you used Nature's Wrath at all?

On 3.9.2012 15:07 chris wrote:
[CL30:DL40] 03:52
I did The Lonely Mountain for a short while followed by The Arena, which I thought would give quick experience. Man, I am getting my butt kicked there! So, off the The Anti-Melee caves where monsters are a bit more manageable, especially those easily angered dragons.

My life rating is poor (97% and I want 120%) so I'll need to be on the lookout for new lives. HP are so so (only 500) but I want/expect oh so much more from a Hades spawn (/sarc).

On 3.9.2012 15:20 Arjen wrote:
Nature Wrath is a completely unused spell. I hate disintegration, leaves you open for massive summonage. I'm more a stone wall/stoneskin kind of HM. It's one of those spells I've never used. More never used spells: Detect door/traps (nature awareness at lvl 5), Animal Taming (never worked), Entrangle (never worked on tough monsters), Animal friendship, Earthquake, Create Lake.

On 3.9.2012 15:44 chris wrote:
Earthquake used to be rather useful for clearing vaults, but no more. I'm open to suggestions on changes!

[CL30:DL40] 04:15
Thanks to yet another Suicidal Rush Into A Greater Vault Way Earlier Than Anyone Sane Would (tm) I've managed the following great gear. Sorry Victor, I had to steal your phrase as I couldn't put it better myself! 2 rings of speed (one gobbled by a pesky dread that took forever to track down after accidental teleport away). Lohengrin and Eriril. An goodness knows what I destructed away in my mad dash for those rings ... those shiny, precious rings!

On 3.9.2012 17:44 Arjen wrote:
Suggestion: Do you have a reason for not having a firespell like blizzard and lightning storm? Both lighting and cold have a low level and high level spell. Fire does only have a low level. Or maybe earth bolt (shards). But I think Chengband doesn't have monsterbleeding? But just sharddamage would add something new.

And summon Ents would be a very nature like high level spell. Maybe make a cap of 1 Ent max as they are very destructive in groups.

Maybe a levitation spell (let the wind carry you) if you are looking for more supportive spells.

On 3.9.2012 18:51 chris wrote:
Call of the Wild
==========
Wind Walker replaces Animal Taming. Grants temporary levitation.

Nature Mastery
==========
Summon Animals has several modes: Early on you get a single random animal. Later, you might get multiple animals. Later still, it might "Summon Hounds" or "Summon Reptiles" just like the trump spells. Finally, it may "Summon Ent". I'd rather not add a bunch of different summoning spells since most players don't use them. But I'd also rather not remove it altogether since I'm removing the charm spells.

Nature's Gifts
==========
Animal Friendship removed and higher spells slide down a slot. Call Sunlight seems more a "gift" than a "wrath" so it becomes the last spell in this book.

Nature's Wrath
===========
Fire Storm replaces Summon Lake.
Gravity Ball added after Ice Bolt but prior to Nature's Wrath. Gravity is a force of nature after all and its effects (short range teleport, slow, stun) are very nice. We could do a shard attack instead if you like, but I think gravity will be more useful.

Thoughts? Should we leave the spell Nature's Wrath as is?

On 3.9.2012 19:41 Arjen wrote:
Sounds nice, Gravity can be nice too. You'll get the ability to teleport monsters on a short range.

And I'm not sure about God's Wrath, maybe a combination of all three elements?

On 3.9.2012 22:02 chris wrote:
OK, Nature is now a more formidable realm. They don't quite have end game caliber offense except I tweaked Nature's Wrath as well. So perhaps they actually have enough for a Nature HM to win with now?

On 3.9.2012 22:21 Arjen wrote:
Very nice, downloaded the newest version :)

Noticed that after 20 casts I still didnt got a single summon from the new summoning spell.

On 3.9.2012 22:33 chris wrote:
Alignment matters for summoning. For example, Ents won't show up if you are evil (and even if not, they only show up 1 in 5). Try heading to Zul for the Ritual of Balance.

On 3.9.2012 22:51 Arjen wrote:
Ahh, I'm indeed evil. :)

On 4.9.2012 01:21 kingvictory2003 wrote:
Nature's Wrath is an AMAZING mid-high level hound killer. Nether and Plasma hounds take 1-2 castings, and boom, there's a free potion of experience for you :) The mana cost at mastery is also quite a bargain for the amount of line-of-sight damage it does. On the flip side, it is horrible for trying to get good loot from large groups of, say, dragons, as the disintegrate ball melts most everything except artifacts, and the earthquake can bury loot as well.

On 4.9.2012 02:36 chris wrote:
And the wanted corpses ... pretty much anytime I fight a wanted monster with Nature's Wrath *that* happens, often without my realizing said monster was wanted.
