My first try at all the challenges, but with abilities. I think I got carried away with perception tree abilities, and my heavy armor use low evasion didn't work out as well as I would've liked. Perhaps I'll go back to the old bread and butter approach.

Your probably right. I had just killed off three cat warriors and he showed up to finish me off. I feared wasted the turn to change weapons but I think I should've made the time. When he killed me he had either 1 or 2 stars. It could've gone either way, but I press my luck like this often, and of course the odds eventually win out.
