This guy is built entirely around Eviscerator, so it will be embarrassing if he never finds it! Eviscerator thrives on high +tohit and low monster AC. Dragon Warlocks have the 5th highest Melee skill after Berserker, Warrior, Ninja, and Samurai, above even Paladin and Rogue. Poseidon reduces enemy AC to 1/2. And Warlocks can reasonably hit CL 50 during the Cloning Pits. What's not to like?

The only problem: low HP. First iteration died to a Paralysis Trap + some embarrassingly weak monster (a Mongbat?), and this iteration is doing better thanks to the +4 Life weapon, but still low on HP. Vapor quest stiffed me on mutations, and I had to spend ~80k to remove all of them.

I should be just about strong enough for Cloning Pits, except I have a dire shortage of HP, Stealth, and !oHealing. That means I should try to find the Queen Ant first.

Well, Dragon Pact Warlocks do get double Resistance for free, but maybe I'll also need a couple immunities?

I got up to CL 50 in the Cloning Pits on Queen Ants as usually, and it was even easier than last time now that I took Infernal Deal and Scared Vitality. Not much of note in the quest, both monster or item-wise, other than Cupid's arrow. I was very pleased to get Shiva's boots though :)

Ran through some mid-40's quests and did DQII for the ?oArtCreation, and my Elven Cloak picked up both +CON and RDis, which is quite nice!

The main sticking point right now is that I'm only getting SI from my weapon, so I can't really go Poison-Needle dragons in the Lair. A Great Hell Wyrm is pretty deadly even with double Resistance, since I only do 136 damage / rnd against it, and only with +6 speed.

Also, I'm getting the feeling that we overdid it with Sacred Vitality. !oCCW for 81 HP and Infernal Deal for 80 HP is a bit much. Maybe we need to tweak the formula?

Currently, it's: min{3*amt, max{CLvl, amt/3}}
Let's make it: min{2*amt, max{CLvl, amt/3}}

The other balance issue I'm seeing is that Aberration pact is way too hard (especially if we implement Knights of the Round Table as well). Maybe we need to revise the pact so that's it's just "h"? Would that be too few monsters? We could make Olympian "h" rather than "p", since they're not technically human but rather gods...

After finding Ringil and the Palantir, I encountered Hermes in a vault on DL 69. There should have been no way I could have won, but Hermes wasted 2 turns in a row trying to summon Olympians and failing.

Chris- I strongly think we need to either allow (1) Hermes to summon Olympians regardless of where he is, or (2) edit monster behavior so that they know when their summons will fail, and don't waste turns trying it. For Hermes in particular, I favor (1), but in general I favor (2).

On 8.4.2012 13:00 chris wrote:
Its hard to know when summoning will fail as it depends on monster level, the contents of the bestiary, the monster level of any allowable summons, the summoner's alignment, the target's alignment and the current state of the random number generator. So (2) is not a practical option. But I can implement (1).

[DL 97] [CL 50] 14:35

Well, when I spotted the Master Tonberry on DL 95, I knew that my melee capabilities are finally coming together. Dragon Pact warlocks can easily kill him at a range with Stunning Blast, and they can actually use the gauntlets... not many other classes can claim both!

Anyway, those sweet gauntlets pushed my damage per round from about 580 per round all the way up to 1078 per round (with Hurin and =oExtraAttacks(+2)), and I was able to easily take out Zeus. My accuracy vs. AC 100 is 84%, and vs. 50 is 92%. Extrapolating for 87.5, I get accuracy 86% vs. the Serpent!

(With the Eviscerator, I'd get 14 blows on average, for about 2000 damage per round, and I'd free up a Ring slot. Come on, unique daggers! I've found 6 so far of the set list, so I'm just missing Caine (rarity 80) and Eviscerator (rarity 250))

Winner! The current pose is NOT a joke pose, I actually used that mad scythe against the Serpent and killed him with it!

Of course, I started by softening him up with Hurin, and only switched to the Scythe when his AC was melted down to 87... that made it much safer.

I did a bunch of math before committing to this strategy. With 85% accuracy against AC 87, that's a 5% chance of a return blow on any strike. With 6 strikes, that's about a 25% chance of 1 return blow, which I can survive fairly easily.

The bigger question is 2 return blows. The probability is Comb(6,2)*0.05^2*0.95^4 = 3%. This is still kind of significant, and two return blows on average will do about 400 damage, with a *GREAT* blow out of the 2 pushing it up to 600. So, when fighting the Serpent, I had to be very conservative, and I teleported whenever I had less than 700 HP.

Fortunately, this wasn't a problem, as the Death Scythe was really strong-- each round of attacks down him down almost a full star!

This was the first Serpent fight where I did not have to use a single Destruction, either scroll or staff. (I did blow up a -oHealing trying to recharge though, and used something like 3 !o*Healing*).

Now then, back to looking for the Eviscerator and a suit of PDSM...

Should this change? I think you were rolling the dice anyway with the vorpal being open ended.

I'm actually liking it the way it is... Death Scythes are so rare and late-game that it's very very rare for a race/class combo to be actually able to somewhat use it, and even then it's still risky. Making Poseidon one of the few races that can moderately use this weapon seems like a good tradeoff.

(Actually, earlier I wanted the Death Scythes return swings to have AC damage reduction like all monster blows do, but now I agree that this would make Death Scythes too powerful. I reason that the "always penetrate the invulnerability barrier" clause to be the same as penetrating damage reduction.)

On 24.4.2012 06:58 dzhang wrote:
Wow, the Zombified Serpent of Chaos was a lot more annoying, because he's native to DL 127, and so I only have a 13% chance of melting his armor, rather than 40%. So it took 25*8 = 200 hits on Hurin before I could finally switch to Madness. Nicely, he was stuck in a Vault, so I could Phase Door to heal up, and use ?oRecharging and my -oHealing. Of course, it still took 6 !o*Healing*, with 2 times being until 100 HP, thanks to the return hits.

Maybe I should try ZSoJ anymore? These things are dangerous... In contrast, Ultimate Magi seem much more tractable... as long as I can actually get close to them.

Found Bruce Lee and Railgun. Still no Eviscerator. If I don't get it after 1 more hour, I'm giving up.

OK, I gave up.

But not without putting on a joke pose first! Donned my 6th piece of Olympian gear, wielded 2 =oExtra Attacks, and wham!

Good grief! You know, the game is much harder for us peons who feel lucky to get 800 damage per round ;)

This display screen does account for the vorpal though, I think.

(20d10+109)*11 = 2409.

(20d10*1.222+109)*11 = 2677.6

Well, it's not like I actually dare use this crazy weapon with 11 blows per round! 6 is pretty much my limit, and even that requires softening with Quickthorn for high AC monsters.
