Check out my newest craziest. I'm playing like molasses, slower even. While not exactly exciting, it's fairly effective. I wait, then focus attack. Blocking synergizes well with this attacking style, since every other round I double my shield's protection roll. I'm sitting on an extremely comfortable protection roll as it is. My biggest problem is damage output. Since my protection is so good I could likely ditch the shield and grab a good two-hander, or maybe try to find a good battle-axe or bastard sword. I've yet to nab anything off of the melee tree. Power is probably good bet.

I meant to ask... would concentration work with this style of attack, wait, attack, wait...? I'm assuming it wouldn't, but if it did, I could work my way up to another +8 to attack from perception.

Yes, concentration should work with that. I'd try it. You will also do well with Controlled Retreat. ZOC and riposte also go well with Blocking, but not with Concentration.

Ah, thanks for the info. I went ahead and took it and after studying the combat rolls I think I understand what's going on. As usual, I had a misconception on how it worked because I don't stop to think things through. It's still a very useful ability, but I was thinking that for each round I spent attacking I would increase my tohit. I realize now that it's specific to each individual monster! So, if the monsters shuffle in and out the counter resests. But still, useful, especially with monsters that take a while to kill.

I'm using a standard approach with the equipment in this dump. Longsword+shield. Better chance of survival against cat warriors and troll guards. However, with Glend, I really bring the pain for serpents. The longsword covers raukar and dragons. I probably should invest in willpower lest I get tranced again, or maybe I should just wear Amrod for freedom... and probably the ring of frost too, but I just can't bear to do it.

Wall of text! A really good tactic with Glend is to stand out in an open room by a hallway all cattywumpus, to use a word my Mom uses, to lure monsters out, hammer them back down the hallway, wait for them to come back for focused attack, and hammer them down there again. My next influx of experience should be for opportunist so I get an extra attack to send them on their way.

There goes one of my most powerful character ever! Again, to fire, and stupidity. I forgot that my elemental resist potion had lapsed, and was using a light fire-resist setup. Also, I knew Ancalagon and the dragon were both there. Hubris, alcohol, poor memory... gah! In any case, perception is a very powerful tool! With master hunter, I was getting insane bonuses to hit on pretty much everything. Butterknife and shield worked well at 9-33 or so protection, and two handed weapons like Glend did very well also. I found some really good stuff, but I was surprised that I didn't find a +1 con amulet. The game crashed on me at one point where I took a trap door, forcing me to reload the level. I purposefully dropped down the same trap door and this time the game didn't crash. First crash I've seen in a long while. I was like, 2 squares away from Anglachel, or Anguirel, and was really excited to switch back to the sword and shield combo but didn't play my cards right. I might try this build again. Hugo has the melee/evasion/will market, but I think a melee/evasion/perception is very viable too. You could ditch lorekeeper and loremaster if you wanted a melee-only I suppose. The few points in song were mostly throwaway... I usually forgot to sing.

For me Loremaster is important, because it saves you from quaffing that potion of poison when you don't know what the hell you have. I might try something like this after my songster build : )

Cool character. I notice Perception, while your third-favoured skill, lagged a long way behind Melee and Evasion. Do you think you might have been getting enough benefit from it that it could stand a larger investment? Or is it just not up to that?

Ah, I missed this question. Perhaps you will miss the answer now that I'm buried among a lot of dead bodies! I find that +10 is a very good bonus for focused attack and concentration, with the overall +20 perception bonus. I don't have enough experience to label it as such, but it feels like a good sweet spot.
