My first Quickband berserker. Quickband berserkers are native to ice, resistant to fear and gain Rage Points in battle, which they can keep for a temporary speed bonus or spend to use their spellbook equivalents. However, they aggravate monsters and can neither use scrolls nor wands nor staves. Some shop services mitigate this, but they are very expensive. The lack of means of instant escape is perhaps the biggest challenge.

After the close and dearly purchased victory over Boldor I'm mildly confident that I'm going to survive the early game. The recently gained "Shrewdness" power is supposed to get you better prices in shops. Let's see whether it makes shopping with CHR 3 less like running the gauntlet...

900 gold pieces for a single ticket to the dungeon!? Looks like I'll have to travel on foot on the way down till the midgame. That is, till DL 6 or so.

About my max depth being 7: Fell down a trapdoor to DL 5 and went down a shaft to DL 7 to activate the Climbing ability (you spend two rage points while standing on an up staircase or up shaft to return to the town at once).

I hope to get four !CSW before returning to DL 4.

Yay! Cleared a mimic vault with more than 20000 gold inside! And thanks to Ferocity and Shrugging off attacks I didn't need a single consumable! Stat boost, cure stunning and regaining HP at the same time - very handy. And you gain the needed RP simply by fighting on.

I've invested the gold into much better armour, a ring of Protection [+15], a ring of Free Action and a lot of potions of CCW. Turns out that my prolonged stay on DL 3 has enabled me to skip at least two DLs. I'm currently trying to find a way downward and hope that I haven't missed an artefact because of the "Go deeper" level feeling. I also hope that I can soon afford the 900 gold for the WoR service. Thankfully, staying well-fed and getting back to town is comparatively easy because of the Hunting and Climbing abilities.

A "superb" DL 6... For the first time since playing this character I felt my heart go faster. I explored the level with utmost caution and only needed a few !CSW to cure confusion (and rods of Trap Location). Even the combined forces of Wormtongue and some dark elf sorceress did not pose too much of a threat, thanks to a choking point, Shrugging Off Attacks, Brutality and the intrinsic Sustain Strength... Still, there were three dangerous situations: A multiplying hummerhorn, nearly getting caught in a vault overrun by giant fleas and triggering a teleport trap. The gnome warden (one of Antoine's inventions) also had a shockingly powerful lightning attack. The stat drain and item damage I only suffered because I got wanton when trying to storm the vault. Still, I should close a few resistance gaps before advancing to DL 7...

From now on I will always get 20 !CCW before going to DL8. For a detailed explanation please refer to the AAR...

Wish I could have fully id'ed at least one artefact by now, but... At around DL 5 I had a scary encounter with some invisible, cold-blooded, erratically moving, cold-breathing, life-draining abominations which destroyed several of my potions and drained a total of more than 10000 EXP! Had to spend all my money to recover at least partly from that expedition and buy a ring of See Invisible at the black market.

At least now I have found some decent replacement for the equipment damaged by Mîm. Still worried about his sons, though...

One of your surprises for 2.0.5, eh? ^^

Spent another 1200 gold on regaining stats. At first because I missed the brown '^' against the black background and then because a death quasit assailed me. "This level doesn't feel like a challange"? Two spaces farther from the entrance and it would have been Game Over! Even with Shrugging Off Attacks the !CCW could not restore the HP fast enough. I wonder whether I was just unlucky or whether I need a higher AC. !H are still unattainable, costing over 18000 gold even with Shrewdness, a cap of CHR +1 and the new "CHR +4.

Looking forward to fully id'ing the first artefact at last...

On 3.4.2012 21:25 caruso wrote:
I should have added to my last comment that berserkers are the only class that apparently never gets access to means of Teleportation, so you usually have better chances of escaping a death quasit in Quickband.

There is a pack of nexus hounds on the level and I have no idea when I will finally get RNexus. I'm going to avoid them using the Hunting ability, explore three quarters of the level and then leave. If I remember correctly, nexus can teleport you away, cause minor stat scrambling or drop you on the next level - and I don't want to end up on DL9 with no WoR or even means of locating stairs!

Maybe I shouldn't have used a potion of Speed at the first sight of Ibun, but I'm fed up with suffering item damage and then being unable to repair or replace the items.

On DL6, which is two DLs above my current "challenging" depth, I found a mimic vault and had to use all 33 !CCW ! Without my last potion of Speed I wouldn't have made it back. Thankfully I could grab enough treasure to fully id two artefacts at last. Being able to light up an entire room might turn out to be a lifesaver with my lack of panic buttons. Now I'm waiting for the stores to stock up on !CCW and will stay on DL5 for the time being.

On DL 4 or 5 there was a mimic vault with about 20.000 gold inside, and the risk was not near as high as when trying to clear out the mimic vault on DL 6! Anyway, now I could finally fully id the last artefact and buy a !H. But even with the two !H, !Speed and Terrifying Warcry I'm going to keep the pick for creating shortcuts. I wonder whether mining is even worse for my stealth than aggravating monsters, but I can't find an answer in the manual.

Also found a particularly abundant copper vein, so hopefully I can afford some other important items.

I have bought a lantern of Sight to get a free ring slot, but whenever I need to recharge the phial I'll be without see invisible for 11 to 20 turns...

Indeed, I feel much more comfortable since I bought the rod of Detection at the black market. Especially considering the lack of chaos, poison and even confusion resistance...

Anyway, I'm pondering about buying a dwarven ribbed plate armour, basically for the +1 to infravision, STR and CON, but it weighs a lot, costs 33300 and I'd be less flexible when juggling items. All these games of Quickband, and I still can't estimate the importance of stat boosts... I think I'm going to exchange the +18 cloak for a +21 cloak instead.
