Third try to get reasonably deep. Fingon was a great find. A few close calls, but doing pretty well.

Excessive con is great. Big weapons plus song of slaying really works well. Only really using archery to kill runners while slaying bonus is high. Might take up to precision anyway.

Now with worthy gear in every slot except helm - haven't found *any* special helms so far. But I've got some very nice swords...

Found smithing gloves, so I sprung for the basics - helm of clarity, and a regular cloak to keep the light radius up.

950'. Plenty of time. 8 charges of forge. Limited XP, lots and lots of mithril.

Decided not to forge more than a couple basics. Didn't seem worth it. Just cleared Ungoliant and her brood. Almost time for the throne room.

Slightly dumb, very unlucky death. Looking for any gear improvements before taking the throne, set up double rFire to take on a great fire drake, but forgot that melee resists don't work that way. Critical hit bite for 3d23 wouldn't have killed me *this* time if I'd healed the rest of the way up (was ~40 hp at the time), but still could have done so easily. Ah well.

Tevildo and Shelob in the vault with Ungoliant? That sounds like a nasty fight.

I agree that this death was very unlucky (a critical is pretty unlikely, and even then average damage after your armour is only just over 20). But I think it's appropriate that fighting dragons is dangerous!

On 27.2.2012 01:51 jujuben wrote:
The vault was actually incredibly easy. I'd revealed it with a staff, and Listen meant I didn't have much in the way of surprises. Telvido et. al. were in the outer bits, only had regular spiders. Shelob was in her own little chamber that I didn't find until the end. Got my slaying bonus up on cats, switched to Calris, and smashed spiders until I was done.

You're right, dragons should be hard, and I should have tried to keep my health above 50. I was thinking too much about resources for the throne, and not enough about what I was doing at the moment.

Still, a pretty good run, ended by a little bit of oops and a decent bit of bad luck.
