I've just descended to 450 ft for the first time, and am at Slaying (+5). I'd spent most of the game so far with just Song of Slaying and Unwavering Voice, but I'd just hit Melee 13 so acquired Finesse, Follow Through and Whirlwind Attack, with Crowd Fighting for good measure. I'm not used to Strength 2 characters, so am unsure which way to go with melee. Obviously my choice of Finesse over Power suggests that I'm thinking of combining Song of Slaying with light weapons for good criticals.

After a very painful battle on the previous level (check out the screenshot), I now know Flanking too. Flanking plus Whirlwind attack is really quite good, and makes for a true 'swirling slaughter'. It is also quite good at taking out unseen enemies like shadow worms or Sulraukar, since if you launch an attack you *will* attack everything adjacent whether visible or not. I'm making slow progress though, so I may soon be overwhelmed.

I was having a lot of trouble holding my own at 500 ft, when I was tempted by a down shaft, thinking I could take the experience and always come back. I then saw another down shaft and took that too, ending up at 700 ft. While this seemed foolish, the experience gained and finding a few very good items (such as my first good rings -- Dex +1, Accuracy +2) meant that my power increased enough to hold my own at the new depths. I'm now at 750 ft with my Singing aspirations completed: Slaying, Sharpness, Unwavering Voice and Woven Themes. I've also had a lot of time using Whirlwind, Flanking and Sprinting: a very fun way to fight.

I alternate between my single handed weapons (now a +4 Deathblade!) and my Greatsword of Brightness in case I'm against a darkness monster or something with critical resistance. I'm not quite sure what other abilities to get. I think I'll get a couple of useful Will abilities as my armour finding luck has been so poor (currently using a normal corslet). I may also get Rapid Attack and/or some Stealth abilities. Exchange Places is probably very useful, as would be Cruel Blow and Opportunist. A pity about needing Assassination for the former.

Well, I've managed to survive a little longer. I decided against Rapid Attack for now as it doesn't work well with Whirlwind. Instead I made a push towards 20 Evasion and the point of Dex, which is where we leave our hero for the day...

+4 Deathblade? Wow.

Maybe I should take a crack at V rather than just assume it's not possible?

@ewan - nah... just assume it's not possible.

@half - does whirlwind and followthrough mean you just keep spinning as long as something around you dies that spin?

On 26.2.2012 12:14 Scatha wrote:
Psi: No, follow through never kicks in on whirlwind attacks (so you always get at most one attack against each adjacent foe from these abilities).

I've realised one reason I was finding this character so hard -- no artefacts. Or more accurately, one artefact, whose main feature is granting me an ability I already have, so I've gone with the Shadow Cloak in preference. Hopefully I'll find some soon, or at least my first fire resistance item of any form. If I find a forge, I'll take jeweller and make one -- I'm very vulnerable to elemental damage at the moment. Ururaukar and fire-drakes are particularly scary, but interestingly 3 points in archery, the free Precision ability and a shortbow is enough to do some damage to Ururaukar as they approach, killing quite a few of them before they close on you.

I'm off to India for a trip today, so I'll probably leave our hero at this juncture and return to him in a week's time. I'm open to advice about how to proceed.

I was seriously outclassed in the throne room. I was quickly surrounded, which wasn't that bad given my whirlwind strategy, but prevented me from using dodging/flanking and keeping some enemies further away from me. I never found a second source of fire resistance and never took on a Great Fire-drake, so once I saw that Glaurung and Ancalagon were present I knew my chances were low.

A very enjoyable character though. Just a pity I didn't get a chance to build up a nice slaying bonus in the throne room.

Note that those empty spaces were freed up by the final breath of Ancalagon. If they had been there previously I would have stood a chance.

Nice try. You say no second source of fire resist -- had you quaffed one of your potions of elemental resistance?

On 6.3.2012 10:18 half wrote:
No, I hadn't. It was the second one I'd found (the first being quaffed to identify it). I suppose I'd have done slightly better if I had quaffed it before starting the fight, but I had assumed I'd be able to stay away from the dragons and would use it for one on one fights with them later.

I don't know why I found so few artefacts (or even useful special items). Looking back, I only found two: the Cloak of Maglor (which I chose not to use) and the Corslet of Fingon.
