This is it! I'm awaiting next to a staircase that would take me to Morgoth's Throne Room. I think this is my 4th time. Let's see if I can make it!

Do I have what it takes...to win?

In my inventory, I have:
13 Healing sources (!!!)

>4 !Healing

8 Herbs of Rage

3 Stat Potions
>3 !STR
>3 !CON
>1 !DEX

6 !Quickness

My comments -
The lack of !DEX is a bit worrisome, since I could use some to temporarily increase my Evasion. Even then, I hope my baseline +28 to Melee is enough to get me somewhere. Not to mention that this is +28 with the Greatsword 'Glend,' plus Knock back and Stun and Follow-through.

I invested a bit more into Will so that I could get Constitution (check), Critical Resistance (check), and Majesty (check). I think this was the right thing to do.

My staves are not impressive. No _Freedom, _Revelations, or _Recharge. I should throw out the _Light, but I might need it for the 'darkness'-raukar, in case I'm not paying attention. And yeah...I need to ID that Elm Staff.

If you look at my Notes, I took out some high level uniques that could pose big trouble:
Shelob
Lungorthin
Smaug
Tevildo (and his guard)
Deathblade 'Delmereth'

As I mentioned earlier, I have 13 Healing sources! This is probably the most I had, ever! This should be enough to keep Thargol alive in Throne Room!

By the way, this is purely a 1.0.2 character from the start...

I can't see you not knocking the crown off in one or two shots. BTW Delmereth is kinda nice for getting criticals...but you probably are much better off with Glend. IF you know the layout of the throne room you are set. I'd quaff all my buffing potions right in front of Morgoth if he is still asleep when you get to him. I've always had high stealth in the Throne room so I don't know if monsters will rush you right off the top.

Good luck! Not that you will need it!

One piece of advice: don't become too full or you won't be able to consume the healing potions.

On 21.2.2012 10:42 half wrote:
Also, I might as well let you know the new rules for getting the crown: you need two hits doing at least 10 points of net damage each (i.e. having a red number in double figures flash up twice). This should be a little easier overall, and also give more of a sign of progress.

I don't know what to say...

Upon entering the level, I was in front of an Ancient Serpent. I don't remember which one. I quaffed !STR and !CON for a buff up. The Ancient Serpent and the nearby Troll guards, AND Morgoth notice me right away. I ate an Herb of Rage right away and started taking down monsters. In particular, I was trying to chase down the Ancient Serpent, but it was a little fast... Unfortunately, I got so careless that I ignored healing the entire time. Don't ask why... I got too carried away with the Whirlwind ability from the Herb of Rage. And I totally was not paying attention (!!). Before I knew it, the V was right next to me. After that, it was 'lights out' after getting bitten fatally by an Ancient Adamant Serpent. The other bad mistake was that I FORGOT to USE !Quickness. Oh man!

Game over.

Yeah, yeah. Now, all of my fellow Sil colleagues will wonder, 'Dude, what happened?' Well, there you have it... (in the previous comment post).

Moral of the story:
Don't get too carried away with the Herb of Rage. I really did, in my case.

Dude, what happened? Nah, just joking. If it makes you feel any better, I just looked at my save folder and have something like 150 smoldering corpses, not counting the ones where I've played the same name multiple times. Sil doesn't play around!

That's too bad! :(

Thargol is almost the inverse of my approach: damn the stealth, all guns blazing! It's interesting that you lose out on high DEX this way, though, which really hurts both melee and evasion. Looking at your kill list - Shelob, Lungorthin, Smaug - it's obvious that any individual monster would be OK, but getting mobbed is always likely without stealth. Hmm.

On 23.2.2012 16:19 Psi wrote:
I'd have thought the anti-stealth approach would need Elbereth for such situations - not sure how much of an investment you need for it to be effective at that depth.
