This is usually right about the point where I do something to get myself killed. I think I'll continue to buff song and melee before taking many more skills.

That sounds reasonable. It's definitely possible to go overboard with abilities.

Be careful!

Kind of annoyed right now... I'm in a forge room with exits to the east and south, both of which open up into chambers of their own. Those chambers are completely full of shadow worms, and I can't fight through them to get to stairs. My mattack isn't letting me tunnel through granite either :(

Advice?

I assume you can't fight your way along the edge using Este to help keep your health up? Are all the worms making it too dark to see them and does taking off your shadow cloak help?

Things that might help:

herbs of rage
potions of quickness
potions of constitution
staff of light
helm of brilliance
removing your shadow cloak

I think you can make it through.

I'd tried some of those suggestions individually, but was loathe to use so many consumables at once unless I had to. But I finally just sucked it up and did it, and it worked :)

On 600' I found a 4-use forge, but it was completely infested by nether worms and they chewed up the level by the time I realized that they can tunnel. Gilim got in the mix, and I just ran for stairs and reset the level :(

Thanks for the help, Psi and half!

Worm masses were left in as something of a tribute to Moria. They can lead to interesting gameplay and have a historical interest within tolkien-esque roguelikes so I decided not to remove them on the otherwise strong grounds of not being particularly in the theme and not making much physical sense. That said, they are slow and they don't start replicating until they notice you, and even then they stop replicating when you are more than about 5 squares away. So you can almost always deal with them (the tunnelling is admittedly pretty nasty though!).

On 17.2.2012 19:49 debo wrote:
Yes, now that I know that nether worms can tunnel, it's easy(-ish) to nip them in the bud before things get out of hand. It's just that my old method for handling worm masses was to shut the doors on the room and trap them in there -- definitely not effective in the nether worm case, or in the case that I want something that is in the same room that they are :)

This is definitely the farthest I've ever come. Not such great luck with finding forges, but I maxed out smithing to 10 anyways b/c it's an easy point of Grace. Song of Este is coming in at least as useful as Elbereth, although I should be using the latter more often.

Something I might suggest -- unwavering voice might be better off as a 1.5x multiplier, or something. 2x seems almost crazy.

Although I guess if I was playing a weaker race, I might disagree :)

All good things must come to an end.

This was a stupid death -- I should have quaffed my !Healing instead of trying to finish it off. There was a 3-use forge just NW of where I died, too. Never got my chance to artifice :(

I think I have a better feeling for how to play a character like this now, and I've certainly learned a lot about monsters I've never encountered before!

On 18.2.2012 13:31 Scatha wrote:
By the way, none of the skills 'max out'; you can always keep on increasing them as long as you have the experience.

An unfortunate end, here. Ururaukar hit very hard, but they're not actually too hard to kill. I think your mistake may have been to try to do so much while standing next to it; from the messages at least your previous three actions weren't attacking. You should probably either have just fought (risky), or perhaps run away. You can also do things like starting to sing Elbereth and then running so as to stay out of reach until it turns tail.

On 19.2.2012 16:08 debo wrote:
Yup, I was totally being dumb. I'd already killed a scad of ururaukar, and I'd started to think of them as fodder, which is a bad idea with any enemy in Sil, especially past 400'. This definitely qualifies as a stupid death :)

I think next time, I might just try keeping Elbereth on all the time, more or less. I had enough voice for it, and my stealth was bad enough that being detected is almost inevitable no matter what.
