Somehow, I managed to kill the Crocodile with AC 2 and base speed 0. It laughed at my shouts, but was somehow less deadly than I in melee.
Now, I've leveled up some more by shouting down crowds of undead masses, so AC is again negative :(
I wonder if I can shout thru the Orcs?

Well, I did just switch machines so I had to setup my release process again. I do some xcopies from my build space to a clean space before building zipfiles, and the timestamps were, for some reason, newer in the clean space.
Hopefully it is fixed now in 0.0.88?

I sold a Spiritual Enlightenment for 25k for a +14 damage ring (32k). That's a fair trade I will make every time :)
My lucky Sound and the Fury is staying at home until L26 for Barbaric resistance. Force Brand would be more useful, but I'm betting on getting a second copy by L35 even if it means facing up to Smaug.
Awesome Blow fails too high to use at the moment (53%), so I'll probably pick Str again at L25 despite a low intrinsic (and a high Con intrinsic, which would be my preferred choice). For the time being, I'm shouting, evading, berserking, and trying not to die which is all too easy with my lousy AC.
Oh, I just noticed I can learn Greater Shout now, so I'll need to look for another Northern Frights from the shops. Shout is far too whimpy but Greater Shout should be OK at 13d8.
On 14.2.2012 23:18 chris wrote: [CL29:DE Lords] 03:26
Hmm ... That light source would be nice except for the Antimagic. And the darkness. Actually, I'm not sure who would like that light??
So far, I think the early game for this class needs some work.
[1] My only offense other than melee remains Shout as Greater Shout fails over 30% still, despite my massive 18/156 strength. Still, I don't think 60 damage for 21 sp would help much anyway.
[2] Awesome blow does less than normal melee. I've only managed to cast it once successfully all game, which was vs an Emperor Wight when I noticed that the damage was less than straight melee.
[3] Given 1&2, the -39 AC is hugely detrimental. I'm still meleeing, but monsters like Stone Giants are life threatening.
[4] The spell mechanics are highly annoying. You have 0sp all the time, so you need to focus rage a bunch of times to cast utility spells. Couple this with high spell fail rates and you get the idea ...
Anyway, these are my early game impressions. I would recommend taking at least 20% off the fail rate of Greater Shout and perhaps cutting the cost down to 12 to 15. Also, perhaps the AC penalty could be less, or shifted towards the end game. The early game is already hugely unbalanced for AC purposes (e.g. I had one character with AC50 take 260+ damage from a Cyclops in a single turn ... I probably would have taken more but that was enough to one shot my warrior). Or at least give this class some offensive abilities so that distance fighting is an option. Shout works, but it is magic missile caliber damage and that stops being useful around L20. Finally, I would suggest not running the sp down to 0 all the time. Rather, make the mechanics like the Samurai were you run down to some low number that still permits one to cast utility spells.
Anyway, its a new class, so I'm open to pointers/ideas.
On 14.2.2012 23:48 chris wrote: Actually, I now see that Greater Shout gets 1d8 per level, which is strong. So perhaps it is OK? If so, this class needs something in between Shout and Greater Shout to use, the latter not really being an option until the low to mid 30s while the former becoming rather useless around the low 20s. Melee works OK but seems out of character for this class ...
On 15.2.2012 02:13 dzhang wrote: Feel free to tweak damage/cost/fail in my absence. I would prefer that Rage-Mage have no SP without taking damage or Focusing rage. I'm worried about Ares spawn with Untouchable having too easy a time if we reduce AC penalty... maybe this is an argument to reduce Ares spawn's AC bonus.
Melee was intended to be a backup option for Rage-Mages, and they have decent melee skill... albeit this can be risky due to low AC. Generally, this class is intended to avoid melee monsters altogether.
On 15.2.2012 02:14 dzhang wrote: Maybe reducing fail rates of Awesome Blow and Greater Shout 20% each will be the easiest solution?
On 15.2.2012 03:45 1@2 wrote: My Ares spawn on the ladder bought it mid clvl 32. Having to use Untouchable would be quite a cost as the the AC bonus didn't make life much easier, especially with the saving throws biff you'll be inheriting.
What makes it hard is right up to the midgame and likely beyond is you'll be relying on melee and combined with mage squishiness that is going to be a tough proposition.
On 15.2.2012 19:32 OmniNegro@hotmail.com wrote: I think that given the low mana pool and squishiness of the class you should really nerf the SP drain. And the fail rate of GS is absurd. No character will ever have enough Strength to reach 0% fail.
How about trading a single blow of melee for a reasonable fail rate for GS? And how about adding a spell with zero cost to change the SP drain rate in exchange for AC? That way you can have pitiful AC and actually have usable SP at the expense of AC?
As it is, the RM seems rather hopeless late game.
On 16.2.2012 00:20 OmniNegro@hotmail.com wrote: I notice the changelog for Chengband lists that "Rand-art lights occasionally pick up 'Darkness'". How about giving them something more useful as well? There is not enough variety in the lights. They could have benefits and weaknesses to balance it all out. Perhaps they could add to spellpower whilst giving aggravate?

3 attacks for 89 damage? Pshaw!! That's no way to play a Rage Mage!!!
Of course, lacking MHDSM, my AC is not quite as good as Bink's, and I really take a beating when doing melee.
On 25.4.2012 21:41 dzhang wrote: Well, to be fair, Bink has a Force weapon, so he actually usually does about 150 damage per round. Still, it's low. I'll probably have to search scum Angband for the Queen Ant, rather than risk the Pits.
Geez, you got Summon Horde already?

A bit of a grind with this guy. I'm playing with Hagen for the extra +3 speed and mostly relying on shout. Due to the extra keystrokes required by this class, I'm levelling extremely slowly (~3 hours per 100k xp) ... except when I can find Granite Walls (~3 minutes for 250k xp)! But, having maxed out kills on them, and even on Magma Veins, its going to be really slow going. The problem is having to Focus Rage 2x to prime a Greater Shout, and then Focus Rage 1x for each subsequent shout. Want to light a room? Focus Rage first. Mapping? Focus Rage first. I've built macros for some of these, but its still very tedious going ... Plus I can't seem to find any good gear and my low AC and lack of poison resistance make this about as deep as I dare go. I do have Barbaric Resistance, but that takes 2 to 6 actions to use since the fail rate is still substantial.

Oh and can you please push .92? I lost my nice Ninja to Lems and ambidexterity at level 20 looks mighty sexy.
Thanks again for your hard work!

For the Rage Mage, it turns out that Greater Shout only needs a single Focus Rage to prime, so I must have been confused. Also, I recently noticed the - option when selecting a target (I was in the code to add just such an option!) and this allows me to macro up breaths just the way I want. We'll see if this helps ...

I've temporarily solve my xp problems by moving to the Anti-Melee caves. AC 35 and melee for 89 per round (115 with berserk) make this my best option anyway. I did try to steal Ishikawa's sword for Mana Branding, but he didn't have it.
I'm really not sure what the next step might be. I don't think I can handle the Cloning Pits with 100hp damage (deceptive, since Greater Shout usually takes 2 rounds and costs hp too) and I still need levitation and chaos resistance anyhow. I guess I'm at the mercy of the RNG for a decent drop, but so far drops have been lame, and artifacts weak.
On 26.4.2012 19:25 dzhang wrote: You're at +10 speed and have Telepathy, and you're complaining about bad drops? I mean, Bink hasn't even found a single pair of Boots of Thievery yet.
(In other news, I had a dream last night that I found a Ring of Speed (+38). Yeah, I know that's sad.)

Maybe a better way to fine tune this is to make Blood Lust give (DamageDealt/6) SP, rather than (DamageDealt/8). By my math, that would give 18.75 SP per round, so you're draining at a rate of 3 SP per round... assuming you don't take any damage at all.
Also... would it be faster for you if you Focus Rage twice before engaging? That would give you 54 SP, and if you're draining at a rate of 7 SP per attack from Greater Shout, you can get off 4 attacks before going below 21 SP.
On 26.4.2012 20:08 chris wrote: I don't always berserk since it often doesn't matter ... If it takes 18 actions to kill an Ancient Red Dragon or 15 (+1 for the berserk) that doesn't really make a difference at the moment. Plus, berserk means I can't use my wands of teleport other, which is often critical. Also, sometimes I don't have time as monsters are awake and I'm rushing for other preps (especially double resistance). But I do use it occasionally and it does make a noticeable difference.
My real puzzlement is what to do next with this class. The only think I can think of is to switch to the Poison Needle and the Dragon's Lair. But I will need some levitation first, so I'm content to do stat gain here, at the top of the Anti-Melee cave, scumming ancient dragons. I'm having very good luck with stat potions this game, for some odd reason!
On 26.4.2012 20:27 chris wrote: Precharging does seem work better ... I also forgot you pay sp for each move as well. Testing, Greater Shout from 27sp actually costs 25sp rather than 21sp since your mana decays with every action. But focusing rage skips the decay that turn, so it might the way to go, provided you have the time. On the other hand, the amount of sp you lose depends on how much you charge as well. Charge x5 and Greater Shout now costs 41sp.
So now the math is too difficult for me to figure out the optimal way to go ...

The low tier reward is Balli Stonehand, which is a good fit for this class I think. +3 Str/Con/Stealth along with Resist Base are nice. And 3d8 goes well with Force Branding.
For Falis, you get a 3.5x slay evil brand on a 4d5 weapon, and that probably puts it in or near the top 10. Force Branding augments the slay to 7.25x. For the "weaker" kills (undead and demon) you get a 9.5x slay. For evil opponents, Falis is right up there with Zarcuthra, definitely a top 10 weapon. And there is the +5 strength ...
Actually, I wouldn't mind changing the reward to Zarcuthra, which I feel is slightly better. But the aggravation is a bit annoying.
