I'm heading for the Dragon Caves, too! But first, I decided to roll up the stealthiest gal I could think of, and also to get a little experience under my belt. To that end, I just slew Lagduf who obliged with a nice tasty rand-art cloak: The Cloak 'Hound' [1,+16] (+3 to stealth). Its got +3 Int, Wis, Dex, Con and Stealth that I can see :)

Too much good early luck might make me re-evaluate my plan ... I also got guantlets of slaying (+8, +7) for my Wargs quest reward!

Here's my 1 hour snapshot ... I ain't very effective down here, that's for sure! With 3 attacks for 34 damage, I struggle on the dragon younglings, and need to forgo the more mature wyrms. I was beginning to despair when I spied a suit of BDSM. But good grief. It was only 5 tiles distant from my position, but I had to wind thru 100+ tiles to finally get to it. My next two big priorities are definitely enlightenment and stone to mud.

Time to retreat, me thinks. Never never never assume monsters that are usually friendly are still so. For when I espied Gandalf, I determined to tip toe around my buddy for some risky vault looting ... Risky because Gandalf would probably start summoning and hurling spells at some of the deep nasties inside! But imagine my surprise when Gandalf tried to kill me, a lowly fairy! I had to teleport in panic a few times, and quickly walked over to pick up a golden crown ... of telepathy :) Upon wearing, I spotted much nearby death, including and Ethereal Dragon (sleeping). Finally, my recall kicked in, and I escaped.

Back to Angband for a bit. I've been periodically doing quests, but now I think I will explore these lesser caves in earnest.

I was just starting to despair a bit when the BM stocked an awesome Westernesse dagger with high plusses. Together with my broken sword, melee has improved by at least a factor of 3. Still, things are slow going ... I had a heck of a time earlier killing King Koopa, who successfully draped himself in a swarm of 100+ wolves, blink dogs, wolfhounds, etc. I just couldn't separate him ...

4 stat potions in the barrow downs: Int, Int, Wis, Chr. Shucks ...

I handled The Hoard much easier then my previous characters, except I nearly died to a Death Sword of all things. It was hiding in the loot of recent kills, and I didn't realize what was going on until it was nearly too late, and I was down to a mere 89hp.

After that, I'm doing all I can to boost AC. I'm able to squeeze in BDSM at this point, but that only leaves 2.4lbs for remaining armor. Merry and Pippen can stay at 1.5lbs together, but my 3lb crown of telepathy must go. I feel more comfortable with disenchantment resistance anyway ...

I'm back to the Dragon's Lair where to say I'm getting my butt kicked would be putting it mildly! 50+ !CCW to kill each of Scatha, Smaug and Itangast. I managed my first Great Bile Wyrm with a lucky critical and maybe 20 !CCW. But the second took 40+ runs thru my hp (Hide in mud, attack, retreat) before I managed another lucky critical to remove 5 stars, at which point I popped out of the walls, and swung for all my might, chugging !CCW constantly. Recent AC changes translate into 30-40% extra melee damage from monsters, which is hard on a small ninja. Coupled with monster AC damage reduction, and it is 300-400 rounds for me to dish out the 4500hp required to kill a Bile Wyrm, barring really lucky criticals. So, to counteract this, I'm switching to the Poison Needle, which kills 1 in 13, I think. Definitely about 50x quicker ... I just managed a Great Venom Wyrm on like my 6th swing, and it only managed to dish out 800 or so damage to me in the mean time. Thank goodness for Hide in Mud :)

On 20.12.2010 01:18 chris wrote:
[CL38:DL60] 07:34
Hmmm ... this may actually be working better for me than the poison needle! Melee accuracy around 60% vs AC 175 (up from 10 to 15% last time I was trying melee). And, a 5d9 weapon is landing wonderful criticals! I'll need a bit more time to fully evaluate this, but so far, I am impressed!

I can't seem to find any of the uber-ninja weapons. I'm almost ready to go back to dual wielding, but would like Quickthorn and Silver Chariot first :)

Kamui is OK, but poison is widely resisted. Dual wielding knocks over 50% off my accuracy (I'm just over 70% now, but dual wielding puts me down to 20% ...)

Feanorian Lamp of Darkness!!!!! Holy Cow, but they have proved incredibly rare for my ninjas of late. I seem to recall my last guy having to finish with a torch of darkness, and that only procured extremely late in the game. (Quick Ladder Check: Prickler never found darkness, and Shop-n-Drop ended with just a torch. Big Stupid Troll managed one, but I failed to note when I found it.)

Well, that means Sting and Hellfire can come in, and I'll back up dual wielding with my Westerness. Thus, I gain +8 Str and +4 Con! Of course, accuracy with Sting is currently problematic, being a mere 16% vs AC175. But my dagger is 58% accurate, so perhaps with skill I can get Sting over 40%? Due to its immense wait, it will just never become too reliable. (And this assumes !Heroism and ?Blessing). But I really want the Light resistance ...

I've already have had fun experiences with some drake packs in the dragon caves, and my policy is strict avoidance or *destruction*. Then again, I did that too in Heng. I'm also definitely not looking forward to the dragon uniques later. Got a level 39 shadow-fairy wilder with around 550 HP, and took significant damage even from the unique loot-bag dragons (Smaug, Scatha etc).

Nah only drakes that matter are Space Time, sky drake and wyrms of power etc high hp mass summoning mobs. Chris has added lotsa stuff but he was pretty lazy on playtesting early and even now he seems to quit ~40-45 level which isnt even close to endgame. The late mobs do ofc come with packs often so you get to enjoy the weird current behavior of pack ai.

I suppose those Z-mobs i mentioned that have been "sleeping" werent really sleeping just in the sharpshooter mode and thats why they dont move at all.

Hard to say was that weird behavior by Raphael due to pack AI or his new LOS tweaks.

After a long stretch at DL95 of R'lyeh, I decided to return to more Angband quests. I've already spotted The Destroy and The Unicorn, which is surprising, quite frankly. I figured they would both be waiting for me eventually as quest monsters.

The Robe of Eternity gets two thumbs up for awesomeness. And at 0lbs, I hardly need to worry about encumbrance issues. Plus, it contribute substantially to my lofty 247 AC!

A quick run up to CL50 for a Shadow Fairy! So far, the quest monsters have been manageable, but I just know that Nodens is lurking nearby. Now, either I should load up on !Healing and !*Healing* for him, or I should ignore him ... probably the latter is the safest bet, though ninjas generally can handle the guy. Still, he might get lucky with Mana Bolts and Psycho Spears ...

There really was no need to kill Raphael ... He's got Starbursts, loves to Dispel Magic, and has mana storms and a big lightning breath as well. Also, psycho spears, but I stupidly kept my shadow up anyway. Whenever he dispelled, I tried to hit and away, and it worked OK. I really should have separated him from his Solar army first, but that just wasn't possible.

5 more quests to go. Who could they be?

On 21.12.2010 15:21 chris wrote:
Reflection is nice ... my only option at the moment is an amulet, which I could work in if I wanted too. If I decide to fight The Destroyer, that is probably a really good idea!

[CL50:DL90] 15:14
Ah, there is Nodens! Like a fool, I took him out :)

First, I followed Arjen's advice and swapped in reflection. I lose my maximal strength and 30+ points of AC, but keeping some large damage off seems prudent. Plus, I get to wear some cool Fairy armor! I grabbed 20 !Healing, but that was a mistake. Should have gone with 5 or so *Healing*.

Next, I headed down to DL90 and received the warning that Nodens was my foe. So soon?

Then, strategic destruction. And I mean *destruction*! Don't leave any evil monsters around. Nodens will teleport himself away, and if he gains los on evil monsters late in the battle, he will just heal himself up. But try to leave some considerable stretches of uninterrupted walls for later.

Then, its time to fight! In the walls, of course. Keep Bunshin off, as that is just a magnet for double psycho spears. Actually, the thing that kept getting me was the Hand of Doom, which I don't think I ever resisted! Well, I wasn't reading all the messages, but he got me 3 times with it. Each time was life threatening, as it left my hp down in the 300s. The correct response is to quaff *Healing*, but each time I used a rod of teleport other instead. Hey, fairies are pretty good with magic!

He dropped my namesake cloak, at last. It only aggravates when men try to wear it. But I don't think I can suffer a further loss of AC, unless it resists confusion.

How does rapier of the duelist compare to those? Never paid much attention to rapier weapons since they are mainly for ninjas.

On 21.12.2010 17:23 chris wrote:
Probably, The Rapier of the Duelist is not worth using. It doesn't give any extra blows, which generally disqualifies a weapon for the ninja. Also, it is only +7 to hit, another major strike against it. Vampirism is wimpy on a 1d6 weapon, so I wouldn't use it on that account. The only advantages are +4 speed and +17 AC, which are nice. For a 4 blow weapon, the Wakizashi of Musashi is tremendously better, and I'd use that way before considering the Duelist.

Why play a ninja? Because it is fun! Actually, you can blame Victor for this with his tales of Dragon's Lair booty. Ring of Speed +13? C'mon! I even picked an awful ninja race since I only expected a quick death ...

Well, there it is. The quest gauntlet has been run in the pits of Angband with only a single early tarnish. Stupid Jurt ... but I lacked both Confusion and Chaos resistance at the time.

Dio gave me the option of becoming a vampire. At 107%, I'm not keen on shuffling my life rating, though. Also, I need a few million more xp to max out a vampire, so probably I will abstain. Although, +5 str and +15 melee skill are very tempting! Also, the +4 HD, but a bad switch in life rating could easily negate that ...

Dio also dropped Crimson, but I like Maglor to keep my strength topped off. If I can't boost my speed by the time I'm ready for The Serpent, then perhaps I will swap. But if I do, I'll probably have to go as a vampire since maxing out strength is probably the single most important thing a ninja can do.
