Watching everyone play FA pulled me away from Planescape, so I made a character box.

I managed to create a character while my daughter watched Tommy Choo Choo Train on the other 3/4 of the screen. I decided to suicide a whole bunch of poor grey and high elves while watching Thomas deliver the mail. I eventually found some good black market items that granted resist confusion. He retained his good luck by finding a helm of seeing! on his first trip to the wilderness. Ha! Take that stingy Nick. Thanks for that sword of selling, by the way. 16,000 for the win.

I've pretty much stayed in the wilderness with this character, and it has been interesting husbanding such low hit points. However, the telepathy granting sword and all the speed items I've managed to find have made things pretty much a breeze. I'm certain to die on my next play session now.

I've finally made it to the desert (dessert?) where the pickings are much yummier. Definitely dessert then. Detect magic is awesome, and it's hard to resist just bouncing back and forth from dessert levels looking for tasty stuff to steal and stab for.

Having a blast, wish you were here, HM.

Get that CON up my man. I will bounce back and forth while looking for better gear. You have no choice really especially when you are in diving mode and tend to be in a little over your head. Which is usually the best place to be since you will usually find a game changer which will make it easier for you to gain levels and dive deeper. I used to play slowly, but then once I died to Morgoth I started diving since I didn't want to waste time. And you know it works just as well if not better than going slow.

The spiders aren't giving me any trouble btw: )

On 13.11.2010 23:08 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Good deal. Yeah man, I got lexis-nexused and naturally, my con became one of my lower stats. At least my intelligence got a boosty. As far as diving, I never. I take risks in my own way, which usually means taking on monsters without enough healing potions, attacking when I ought to be bailing and/or doing this while intoxicated on any number of incoherency levels. :)

Good deal about the spiders. I once was in ND without telepathy, but I *knew* they were all around me anyway, which freaked me out even more. Ibbly jibblies. That is one spooky place.

I've been lucky enough to have not been hit with Nexus while I wasn't resisting nexus other than once or twice in V, but I was just teleported in those cases. See, while I dive I like to have enough healing, CCW isn't always enough. But I will go without healing depending on the enemy. For Ungoliant I'm bringing plenty of healing since she is pretty tough. At least in V she is, Shelob was a push over in FA. If I do die it will be because I'm not exactly sure of what is what in FA. Which is part of the fun!

ND is fun so far, but then again I have Unlight and I cast slip into the shadows a lot.

Found a neat amulet of +7 to speed, but it occasionally summons undead and drains charges. I'm not sure I want to risk removing the curses on it. I think I'll sleep on it, but I bet if I don't I'll summon another master lich, but this time when I'm at like 100 hp or something.

I wanted to mention I cleared two themed levels... the Goblin chamber and Barahir's betrayal. I had never seen Barahir's betrayal before. I had to leave the Warlords themed level very early.

So far I'm like this really fast assassin with a butterknife. I really need a better weapon. On the upside, I've got pretty much all my resists covered and I can cast resist poison to fill that gap. I really need more hitpoints. I tried on a trollkind cap for 3 more points of Con but it only boosted my hitpoints by 20 or so. I think I have rolled poorly on my hp gains in addition to not finding potions or items that boost Con. The Rng is getting me back for all those suicides.

The desert is exactly like I remember it. Very lucrative, but it can lull you into a quick death. Thankfully my stealth saved me as I was picking through a vault of items when I realized that one of the d's was Kavlax. He has offed many of my mid-range characters because I'm too careless to check monsters often. I accidentally pressed a wrong key a few weeks ago and realized something I should've probably known for a long time... [ Allows you to check all the known monsters and ctrl+i lets you see all the known items on the level. How did I not figure this out sooner? I'm amazed I've even beaten some of these games before.

Decided to try out a few Angband levels and came across an interesting vault. I've seen its type before, but I don't know the name. I'll post my screenshot of it. With my shadow hiding technique, and I guess my decent stealth, I was able to waltz in and steal several items without anything noticing. I then targeted monsters that I could manage that were guarding nummies. It was a lot of fun. I think this is the first time I've used stealth to any advantage since my Moria Half-Orc Rogue winner. While this was exciting, it doesn't compare to tippy toeing around AMHD's that can blast you to oblivion at will. Anyway, I found a good esp replacement on a ring of fickleness I was able to uncurse completely. In addition, I managed *not* to bring the shield of Khazad-Dum, which is immunity to acid and a bonus to CON. Argh! How did I do that? I must've identified without picking up. Bonehead! Now I'm wondering if I should go knock on Glaurung's door just to get the athletics specialty.

I'm trying out a new kit on my next trip down. I found Crisdurian and by God, I'm going to use it. That 1d7 crap was getting very old. I only get 4 attacks per round but with all my current buffing options I get over 100 dmg per blow against its many slays.

BTW LostTemplar likes ND a lot for picking up loot, just use some dragon armour and transform into a dragon and stick to the woods. I just thought that I'd past that on. But be careful with the Children of Ungoliant. They are worse than Shelob.

Man, hide in shadows in ridiculously powerful, especially so with +21 speed. After nabbing the athletics feat I decided I needed to be deeper in Angband. I ended up only raiding the desert about 4? times... I thought I would be stuck there for at least a dozen trips.

I came across your 'keep' vault Orcbane. I managed to gut them all up but I only found 1 chest... I thought there were 2. Hide in shadows, stabbity stab. Hide in shadows, stabbity stab. Hide in shadows...

Ah, my old friend Calris. *Snuggies* Calris managed not to uncurse itself even though I got it to +9. Those 50 scrolls of enchant skill came in handy. They will be missed if I find the Glaive though. I tried a couple of *remove curse* scrolls as well as 5 regular remove curse scrolls with no luck. I really want to see the hitpoint boost it would give me but I can't afford to be married to Calris forever. As much as I love it, I might actually not want to aggravate for once in my banding career.

On 15.11.2010 01:43 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
Hmm, Calris is one of those weapons that I never found much use for. I find it a one trick pony. Good for dragons and not much else of course I have only used it in V. I just found Arglang( I think that is how its spelled) and speed kills. That plus my green dragon armor is keeping the Children in check. Ungoliant is in trouble now: )

On 15.11.2010 02:21 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Sacrilege! Calris is awesome. The +5 to Con and Disenchant resist is pretty good. I normally welcome the aggravation since I usually play warriors and like to kill pretty much everything anyway. I'm mostly just fond of it because I've won a few games with it. I prefer the Glaive over it, but I like over the top damage dice randarts the best, like my 2d17 lance of slay evil my last character had. That thing really packed a wallop. Whallop?

On 15.11.2010 06:04 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
I'm all about the speed myself. But of course its all about how your equipment works as a whole. See, Aruglang, the cloak and the Dragon armor give me +10 speed. Now you add a haste spell and I'm hitting 12 times before a normal speed monster. Plus the shield bash that comes into play. If I looked at the Battle axe and Aruglang side by side I'd go for the Battle Axe, but looking at how I can get all my gear to work together the Katana wins: )

On 15.11.2010 19:48 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Alright, I've finally got Calris. Whew, I needed that Con pretty bad. And, on a very interesting note, when I uncursed Calris the aggravation feature went away. Wow, that's a first! Even more good news, I now get 5 attacks a round and get my shield back in action. I had fun raiding a rather nasty looking vault and found Nimphelos and my first RoP scroll. Currently knocking off the nastiest uniques and stockpiling for the final fights. My lack of darkness resist is annoying me as is my hole in poison. Hmm... I've got several options with my kit due to the veritable jewelry store in my house. I predict that Wiruin will kill me.

On 16.11.2010 20:19 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
I've been knocking out lots of nasties. I'm currently hunting for the Tarrasque and Ancalagon. I managed to off Wiruin, so my prediction was wrong. Man, is that sucker nasty.

Shapechanging into a werewolf is very powerful! I'm not sure about all the stuff that goes on under the hood with this spell, but it sure cranks my skill and deadliness up a good deal. With my blessing buff and heroism potions, my bonus to skill sits at 75 with my deadliness at 200%, which is triple damage if my memory serves correct. I know my magic device success rate plummets and I aggravate when I do this. It's actually kind of handy being able to aggravate at will, which lets me pull monsters in to my predetermined battle areas. I can't wait to get to level 48... I want to see how big a boost, if any, berserk strength throws into that mix.

Okay, now I'm just dragging my feet. Only Morgoth, Sauron, Lungorthin (Where *is* he hiding?!) Ungoliant and one of the Q's are alive. I've got a pretty good stockpile of major healing and certainly a good enough outfit. I think I'll take another few trips to Angband to look for the Q and Lungorthin and to give the stores a chance to restock. I'm currently ordering Mana restoration, Healing, *Healing* and Life. The cure mortal wounds spell is quite nice with a low failure rate and at only 3 mana to cast. I wish my intelligence were much higher so I had more mana.... I also imagine a 0% fail rate is possible on most of my spells but that's just a guess.

Bloodwrath + Black Blessing + Heroism + Werewolf form = Legendary(200) fighting status, +80 skill, 230 deadliness. Amazing. For a grey-elf non-warrior @ 5 attacks a round he really rips through stuff when he wants to, especially dragons and demons. The readout says 144 per blow against those. It makes me wonder how much my noisy assassin, the Longbeard Assassin, would dish out.

On 17.11.2010 20:30 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Alright, I finally have a win with something other than a warrior! w00t. Plus, this was my first grey-elf win as well.

Morgoth was very tough and he threw me an interesting surprise, but I gave him one too. I never tried to use permanent walls to give myself an advantage against him in any variant before, but this time I thought I'd give it a shot! Haha, Morgoth just plowed through that permanent rock like it wasn't even there. There I was sitting on my rune of protection going, uhuh, good one. I got him back though, because my mana burn quickly diminished his ability to summon and surround me by all sorts of evilness. To his credit, before I got his mana worked down he managed to summon Ungoliant and Sauron, then black reavers. After I finished Morgy off in a fairly vacant part of the level I knocked out Ungoliant and Sauron. I'll probably suicide this guy soon because I would like to see the special graphic Nick put in for immortals.

That was fun. The hide in shadows is very powerful against all but the most wary monsters and it was a treat for me to actually use stealth to any use. As far as throwing and bows, I think I managed to throw about 20 times, with poor success. I connected maybe a little less than half the time. I shot about 50 arrows towards the beginning of the game to get going. Oh well... back to Planescape Torment until the call of Angband hits me again!

It's essentially a never ending always ready wand of digging. Or stone to mud. Or tunneling. Or whatever it's called nowadays. Morgoth tunneling through perma rock! Ouch. Never seen that before. I guess it is a side-affect of the change to his wall-eating radius. Sounds reasonable - but are the grids still counted as icky?

Thanks! I really like the way Morgoth plows through rock, including permanent walls. Because of that, his increased frequency of good summons and his gloves of break runes of protection I actually respect him now. I've often thought of Morgoth as just a formality, nothing much to really worry about but not anymore. Because he acts like a magnet I usually just wail and bail and work him down... but now it's much different when you meet him because there is a guaranteed open space between the two of you, not to mention the swath behind him. It reminds me a little of the Mad Chemist in Entroband because that guy would throw exploding potions and just expose you to everything.
