What you want is an enhanced dice ego weapon - something like a 1d10 sabre of melting. Big dice make a huge difference in O variants. Forasgil is an excellent weapon for example. Also watch our for Whips of the Balrog - they may be a 'bad ego' but against non-fire resistant opponents there is little better.

What is the next guardian that I should take out? I think that Ungoliant is one, but is there an easier one to fight first?
On 13.11.2010 21:16 HallucinationMushroom wrote: I think it's become common practice to just go straight to Angband at this point. Tol-in-Guarhoth is chocked full of hounds and Nan Dungortheb is a very tricky dungeon area.
I think most players skip these for those reasons and also for the fact that you usually have the max # of specialties you can receive at this point as in your case.
Nick has given Ungoliant a fixed item to lure adventurers to ND, but since I've never gotten it I couldn't tell you if it's worth the trek. Since I can tell you like FA, you really ought to visit Nan Dungortheb at least once... it is very atmospheric. Since you have a high stealth character you might have a different experience, but in my times there I was constantly being tracked and surrounded by all sorts of evil spiders and hounds. They stay just out of reach, constantly trailing and surrounding you, just waiting for you to dip below a certain % of your hitpoints or for you to bump out into a clearing to attack. Nick did a good job of making Nan Dungortheb *feel* like an evil place... I don't go there often because when I'm there I feel very stressed and scared, not for game mechanic reasons. You really ought to go! :)
On 13.11.2010 21:35 Fendell Orcbane wrote: Damn, I thought that I could get more specialties: ( I was hoping to give mana burn a try! The open spaces are what I don't like about the outdoors. But hounds can't breath in a forest so they are easier to deal with...just stay away from openings: ) I wonder if Ungoliant in FA is like Ungolaint in V.
On 13.11.2010 23:02 Fendell Orcbane wrote: Kavax is down! He didn't even hurt me much:) Of course maybe the woods that I was in had something to do with that. I thought that it would be good to fight him there since he couldn't breath from far away and would have to come close where I could chop him to bits with my axe. Which is what happened. So I bit Nick and I'm going for Ungoliants cloak. But I hate scumming around outdoors. I feel safer in dungeons. Oh well it could be plains...that would be hard.
On 14.11.2010 04:23 Fendell Orcbane wrote: I've finally met Ungoliants children and I have to say that they need some spanking. Honestly if I didn't have a good artifact weapon I think I'd be find with a Gondolin weapon. I also came across some nether hounds and forgot that I had a *destruction* scroll handy and me without hold life. But I survived so its all good.

Don't underestimate how much a burden the town merchants can take off the endgame. If you do a fair amount of shopping or heading back to town before each adventure then the merchants will really help by grabbing the major healing potions for you (as long as you've found 1 of each before). I work them to death by the endgame, having 3 merchant recall points by the time I start delving Angband. I guess in a roundabout way I'm trying to say that Morgoth is much more approachable if you have a nice stockpile of *healing* and life. The times I've died to Ol' Morgy were all due to me getting tired of looking for enough greater healing and just going with what I had.

See, in V I'd wait until I had a source of immunity to fire before I took the two big bad balrogs down. Here I did without. I can see why most of the FA players go to Angband...powerdiving. Immunities aren't a given in FA like in V - though with percentage resistances you can build up very good elemental protection. Of course, immunities don't protect your inventory anyway, so they are not so valuable.

Thanks. I actually think that Hobbit Rogues are good, you just have to think sneaky. Which is why I saved Razorback to take Morgoth out with but stuck with other armors. I did try a high elf ranger and got killed pretty quickly. Honestly I might try to get a high Elf/ranger off just for the challenge. But I'm gonna try and take a break for at least a few days since I think I'm kinda addicted to Angband. As for V, I think that I'm going to mess around with FA and eventually some of the other variants since everyone plays V over and over. I'd rather encourage people that took the time to create new variants, by actually using their handy work.
