This early game is so darn hard! I mean, I don't even have a single source of ranged damage at the beginning. Had to fail the flurry of quest to get into the Tower, where I fearfully let myself get breathed on my Energy hounds.

It took me like an hour to get Eat Magic, so dying quickly is not an option!

Chris: Yeah, more like was forced to. With 4 weapon damage per round and no ranged attack, I didn't see any other way than to head straight to Tower and go for a breath. It started at 60% Fail, I think.

The main issue for the end game will be mana, but Eat Magic can handle that (if you scum), passwall can handle that (if you play a spectre), and for the final battle, you just quaff !Restore Mana.

But like all mage like classes, its take a heck of a lot of patience to get there ...

Oh, I did pick up a "Summon Monster" spell. I tried casting it on the surface 8 times, and each time it went hostile immediately (I'm not even a Sexy character this time!). One wraith-type creature almost killed me the last time, and that's when I decided that it was basically a Staff of Summoning, rather than Trump summoning.

Yeah, my midgame was a post tower buff and maybe later than I recall ... probably more a late mid-game! Breathing for about 200hp is still pretty useful, assuming you have 600hp. Plus, there are effects like stunning and confusion, and you can usually find one elemental breath that works. Not too many monsters resist all the elements.
