Started next to a pack of inertia hounds, a deathknight, a red dragon, an ettin, a dreadmaster and a Greater Demon pit (which seemed to be disconnected from my starting point). The hounds weren't too bad, but it all got a bit nasty when the ettin joined in when I was after the D. They both fled in the dark when I was low on HP. A ranged attack could have been deadly. I detected and shot them. However at this point I was using my whip so without SeeInv didn't see the dreadmaster wakeup and attack. Due to my low HP I couldn't afford to use a turn wielding Nimloth, so I teleported... and landed between the demon pit and the greater vault, Mortuary Temple of Set. I took out a pack of Impact Hounds who burst out and then was able to rest up - I guess the Us still can't work out a route to get me. Phew. There are two unId rings in the vault which is always exciting, but I bet they will be Ice and Acid... if I make it that far.

Last find was the Glaive of Pain - it'll never have as much damage output as my whip of the Balrog, but it may well be the best weapon I find to take on Morgy (massive assumption there of course). On a more positive note, I managed to equip my mace, have two rounds of combat against a Black Reaver to kill it (!) and then re-equip Aule before the aggravation kicked in. Didn't know that was possible!

My second ironman winner and this one is still alive and kicking butt. Now for the other summoned Guardians...

Hard to comment on balance from that game, as I had obscene luck with kit and finding 13 ?RoPs is ridiculous. I don't think you've changed the drop code since Psironic and she ended up fighting Morgoth with Totila and only found a couple of ?RoPs. That said I have played many, many ironman characters inbetween the two and obviously they all fell well short.

Finding a weapon like that makes life a lot easier, though in fairness I only used it on Cantoras and Morgoth because of the aggravation (high stealth goes a long, long way in ironman). I've only seen one better weapon against Morgoth and that was my 1d21 Storm Hammer with slay evil.

The only way to get specialities is to kill Guardians and you have to choose your race and route to Angband very carefully if you want to attempt that! However now that Morgoth is dead I have picked up Mana Burn (I needed unlight for the stealth as my first speciality).

I probably should say that Aule actually does more damage than my mace in most situations. It is just against the undead and non-Demon-non-Dragon-with-ImmElec that the mace is better.
