I don't get it though... why would you recall to the dungeon with no armour at all? Its not like your 351 gold couldn't have afforded you a basic kit.

The only option you have to try to keep out of melee are phase door and teleport spells, and those occasionally tend to leave you exposed.

You are right about one thing, armour isn't much help against magic. But thats not enough of a reason not to wear it at all.

As for armor as a mage--I agree with Narvius. It's far more important not to get slowed by encumbrance. Don't wear armor unless it gives you a boost. (And Dwarven armor is always good.)

If I start as a mage, I usually go with a cloak, soft or hard leather boots, a robe and either a leather cap or metal cap. This won't cost much, and will encumber you by about 10lbs tops.

Your encumberance is going to be more affected as you loot the dungeons, especially if you pick up every soft leather armour, iron spike and wooden torch that you see.

Adventure naked at your peril.
