I'm really liking Un lately. I'm still playing a maia istari which makes the game rather easy, but it's fun just exploring all the areas. I've just spent the last couple million turns running around from dungeon to dungeon, killing every unique guardian I can find. I'm also ~10 character levels higher than I've ever been before. I'm playing it as pretty much a rogue/mage.

I tried starting off at Maggot's farm instead of the normal route this time - and it made a huge difference. Tom B had some sweet high ego/randart armour & weapons that made a huge difference in the early game. From there, it was pretty straight forwards. Smaug fell surprisingly very easily (gotta love those Frost Bolt II + Concentration spells).

I'm running out of things to do though. Wormtongue has kicked my ass every time I tried attacking him, so I've been avoiding Isengard. I lost my map to the mines of Moria somewhere along the way - next on my agenda to find a new one and move on through Lothlorian.

Also, lost my one spell book that had Satisfy Hunger in it recently - I've been running out of food a lot ever since then. Somehow, I can't seem to get to any towns other than Rivendel (which doesn't restock food) or Bree (which is guarded by a Black Riderm but he (bug?) never shows up in the town.) Perhaps I just can't keep track of all the locations correctly.

Have you explored Minas Tirith, etc? How about battles, in particular Helm's Deep? Paths of the Dead?

How come about the towns? What about the Dale, Woodmen village, Edoras (this one in ruins, I guess)? The rider shows up only at night, I guess. About locations, use 'M' and 'L' when in the travel menu. Good luck. :)

Updated dump. Random comments: Ran through the Caradhras and killed its guardian with surprisingly little difficulty, which gave me access to Lothlorian, Minas Tirith, etc. Found my spellbook of Satisfy hunger again too - so I'm back on track. I'm having trouble juggling all my equipment to cover all the resists and such. Inventory space is alway too small to carry everything I'd like. I should probably drop a couple of the spell books. I've still never found blind resistance, which is only now becoming a problem (especially considering I'm playing as pretty much only as a mage). Found my first ever +speed item - and now I have +14 speed which helps a lot. I think that once this character dies (or wins, even?) I'll have to switch to a "real" class/race (ie. not maia istari). Magic bags were a huge help earlier on - good feature. It doesn't go to the ridiculous extreme of nethack where you have near-unlimited inventory space once you have a bag, but it does allow you to use a lot of items that would otherwise be TMJ.

> How did you manage to kill Tom? I avoided him with my current warrior (but I didn't avoid his lady:).

I don't remember exactly, probably a bunch of magic bolts of some element. He seemed easier than when I'd been there before, so maybe I was just lucky.

> Have you explored Minas Tirith, etc? How about battles, in particular Helm's Deep? Paths of the Dead?

I just found my way to Minas Tirith now - it's good to be adventuring somewhere where I need to be careful again. I don't think I've seen Helm's Deep yet but the other battles are neat. The Paths of the Dead seem to be a Point of No Return, so I haven't gone that way yet until I'm sure I can kill the guard there.

> How come about the towns? What about the Dale, Woodmen village, Edoras (this one in ruins, I guess)?

I think I forgot about a map connection somewhere earlier. I was running around the west side of middle earth, low on food, but somehow didn't think to try Rivendel. Oh well, all is well now. (I'm drawing a map for myself as I go this time...)

Ah, makes sense. Thanks!

You can get to Minas Tirith via many routes. One of them is very early, before any of the cities fall, but I see you didn't take that route and it got closed forever early on. On of the other routes is via Paths of the Dead, but it's a hard one, indeed.

I see from the Dungeons visited dump, you've actually won the battle of Hornburg (the citadel of Helm's Deep), but you don't remember. :)

Oops, your map shows me I was wrong about the easy route to Minas Tirith. It's not that easy and it does not vanish. Goood. :P

Well, I was progressing along nicely for a couple hours this morning - I found a map to moria so that I could get out of the bad lands in the east and finish Khazad-dum, Dol Goldur, Wormtongue and have a dozen other uniques - and then I accidentally hit ~6 instead of ~7 and the game crashed. Two hours of play gone. :( I'm normally so careful about saving a copy of the game every twenty minutes (since I'm playing the dev version) but I guess I was too caught up in play. I've found lots of artifacts, but few useful ones. I finally got rBlind and rConf which made things a lot easier. I needed rLife Draining next, I think.

Anyway, I've cleared moria again and plan on setting off for the east once more. And I'm bringing a map with me this time...

Woot, level 50. Pretty easy going actually - I didn't have to go out of my way to increase my experience much at all, other than just diving to kill as many of the unique guardians as possible. The dungeon guardians in the east here are pretty - Maeglin, Draugluin, Gothmog and Mouth of Sauron all went down in only a couple blasts of Bolt III spells. Blindness resistance is still lacking. I just found the Boots of Endil a couple minutes ago, which will finally let me put my bow slot to better use (not that I've found anything to put there yet). Phoenixes are a gold mine of experience; they're one-shot-killable and killing ~7 of them is enough to get a level. Combined with the fact that they can see you from miles away and are pretty awake, they'll just flock to you in Orodruin.

1700 HP is a bit ridiculous...

I have no idea if I'm ready for Sauron yet since I've never came anywhere close to this deep ever before (I think finding rBlind might be a good idea first), but I can't see him being too much trouble with my hand dandy Acid Bolt III spell: 18d48 = 912.

(BTW the numbered bolt and ball spells are a neat idea - it effectively doubly- or triply-hastes you if you're attacking with spells.)

The ridiculously high turn count is from running around everywhere, trying to map out all the connections, not actual adventuring.

145075 player turns is 1.5 million game turns at normal speed and much less hasted, so you are pretty fast.

How strange: your SIZ and AGI are 2 points less than STR and DEX, which they should be equal to.

No - stats are randomly increased, with diminishing returns. They just happened to both be two below the other related stat:

Lesson of the day: don't 'band while drunk. Even if you're so excited about finally finishing final exams for the year and about killing Sauron for the first time that you can't resist playing. Start a new character and play that one instead, if you must. A very close call.

Sauron died without too much trouble. A volley of Acid Bolts finished him off pretty quick, though his summons were too much for me to take down (Sauron himself died in only two triple bolts); I had to retreat to another stairway before I could examine any of his drops or take the stairs down. Which means that I had to take the long, slow staircase down to the up, since I was lacking any WoR. [Idea: once the guardian has been killed on the bottom level of a dungeon, generate staircases like the 'magical' one that appears if you return to the level later. Beats scumming for stairs back. Or better idea: always remember to take ?WoR with you.]

A really close call with Saruman in the ruins of Hobbiton though. I wasn't really paying much attention to the battle, just Bolting him over and over again, when he hits me with a couple unexpected spells and before I know it, I'm at 20 HP. No excuse, just carelessness. No worries though, I'll just quaff one of the *healing* potions I was saving - wait where did all my heal potions go? Must have gotten frozen without me noticing. No worries though, I'll just 'm2f' Teleport Self across the acid river and heal up - but wait! Where did my second spellbook go? I've been so used to having a (fireproof) spellbook that I forgot about water damage. It seems that so few monsters have BALL_WATER that my spellbooks were pretty much indestructible. [BTW, only 10 monsters have BALL_WATER and another dozen or so with BOLT_WATER spells - I'd add it to a few more monsters to keep those spell casters on their toes.] No worries though, I'll just use my staff of teleportation that I was saving for a time like this - but wait! Something drained the charges on it without my noticing. Uh-oh. I end up phase dooring away and happen to get behind one of the houses. This give me time to heal up a bit and then make a run for it, swimming through the acid river. Saruman seemed unwilling to swim the river and doesn't seem to be smart enough to teleport across, so I had all the time in the world to hide behind one of the houses on the other side and fully heal up, rest, and re-haste myself. Next time around, I was actually paying attention and Saruman is a threat no more.

The harder Gothmog has proved the most trouble so far - he's resistant to acid, lightning, fire and cold, so my normal strategy of 'bolt III'ing everyone isn't very effective against him. Eventually I managed to get myself surrounded by a bunch of Vrocks that he summoned in a hallway and sent volley after volley of Acid beam at him. (Using a combination of Cure Moderate Wounds and Concentration, I can heal myself much faster than two Vrocks can hit me.)

The only three other guardians (Which King of Angmar, Sorcerer of Dol Goldur and Ancalagon) left weren't too much trouble after that, so all the dungeons other than Angband are cleared now (other than the buggy Watcher in Ungol).

Watch out Morgoth, as soon as I find some more heal potions, here I come.

Oh, and at one point I had over 1850 HP, and still enough INT/WIS to know and cast all the spells I wanted comfortably. Some STR/SIZ bonuses might need to be toned down a bit, or at least make INT & WIS more important to spellcasters.

Those potions are stuff that I had identified, but when I upgraded the version of unangband that I was playing, I forgot the flavours of stuff due to a (now fixed) bug. They're mostly either stat restore potions, healing of some variety or cure disease.
