I must say I really like the new feature of NPP that tracks how you acquired each item. Props to Jeff/Diego. :)

After an amazing Greater Vault, I now have more artifacts than I know what to do with. I even had to leave some back on the level and take only what I thought could be useful. There were at least a dozen uniques on the level, you can see the ones I killed in my notes, and the ones that I chose to fight another day: Saruman, Smaug, Scava, Kavlax, Arien, Nar and Ar-Pharazon... maybe some others that I can't remember.

Honestly, I played it amazingly smart, setting up parallel tunnels to draw enemies into so I could *magic* beam them at one time, force them to attack each other, and then if they got too close, either tp them away or phase door myself to a different tunnel so that I could rest up (regen is nice!), forcing them to take the long way around.

Any uniques or enemies that I didn't know were met with my strongest force, and tp'd away at the first sign of trouble. I also vowed not to get greedy and to tp level at the first sign of trouble (if tp other wouldn't do). Well, I did it, and managed to clear out all but those uniques mentioned previously.

The main difficulty was nether bolts that drained my xp, causing me to lose levels and forget the spell Rift (what a savior!). I ended up taking a break from my assault on the vault, bumming around the rest of the level trying to get my xp back up before tackling the rest of the baddies.

I nearly had a heart attack when a bright green D (Shadow Drake?) appeared out of nowhere, breathed nether on me taking away half my life, all the while chilling in the wall. I had to either back up or stone-to-mud the wall to tp him away (because it was rather late in the game at this point and the rest of the level was filled with uber uniques that I wanted to stay away from, so I couldn't tp myself). Anyway... he breathed again, taking me down to 8 HP... and after picking myself up off the ground I tp'd him away and was done with that.

To give you an idea of perspective, at the start of this, I'd found maybe a few artifacts, nothing really usable... I had no speed items, no rConf (but I did have rSound, rBlind and ESP) and now I'm overflowing and feel it's likely I'll be able to fill almost all holes but rNether (bummer).

Anyway... I need help. I'm not quite sure what the best kit is right now. I found Thorin for the first time ever, so I know I want Thorin to be a part of the kit if possible. I also need to be fast, so the more speed items the better. I believe the cutoff for CON is 18/200 and INT is 18/220... so that's what I should be shooting for there, right? Other than that... I'm not sure. Also, I'll take advice on what items I will never need and should just sell straight-away, and what items could be useful for future kits and I should keep on hand just in case.

And as always, playing tips for 2500' and lower are always welcome, as I can't seem to survive much further than I am right now. I really wish I had Resistances of Scarabtarices, as this is the first character I've had this deep without it and I feel naked without my second level of resistance. Thoughts on escape preps and knowing when to bail are helpful too. Thanks guys!

Okay... I think I've got the best kit figured out. Let me know if you see anything I should change. More speed would be nice.

My =STR +4 is essentially a placeholder because I don't have anything else worth putting there. It'd be nice to fill the spot with =rNether or =Barahir.

I don't have boots on because I don't have anything worth wearing right now. Any more weight just adds to my encumbrance and takes away SP. Smart? Stupid? Are boots of Lava Nativity worth it? Or is it worth losing some SP for a few more AC?

Another option: Isildul and Rilia. You loose 2 int and regen. You win resDis and some defence.
I'm not saying that this one is better than what you are wearing, I just rate resDis very high (higher than nether for example) so personally I would go that way.

Oh and if you don't wear those nativity boots now, you'll never wear them. You'll get cold feet without...

Try out using Rilia, Arvedui, and the =Int instead of strength or Rilia, Islidur and =Int. It gains you sInt either way, which is more important than sStr, but still isn't critical. It gains rNexus with Isildur, and rShard is you go with Arvedui as well, but Arvedui would lose you rConf. Isuldur would probably be the better of the two unless you get another source of rConf.

Matthias... why do you value rDis so much? At what level do you find it useful?

I value regen highly because it essentially boosts my HP and SP in longer battles.

I'm trying out a "speed" style kit right now. Let me know what you guys think.

I guess it's because I'm playing warriors a lot. From the logical side it is in the same damage class as nether, but the side effects are worse. However there are only very few monsters using it in non-melee (no disenchantment bolts afaik). However I can remember only one Death to Nether and that was in a case where even resists wouldn't have saved the character, so Nether dropped in my value rating while Dis climbs after every "was disenchanted". So, yeah, a personal thing :)

I don't care too much for regen, I would take a higher def over regen in any case. In uninterrupted battles you likely won't notice the effects. Everything with a break by Phase/Tp in between has !ccw if you really want to get up quicker. Again just a personal thing that might change if I play more Mages again (and following yours' kind of increases the chance for that happening :) )

With mages regen is very much noticeable. It has a huge effect on SP regeneration. It makes magic missle practically an unlimited ammo shooter. You can literally sit there and repeat magic missile over and over (finger on 'n' of course) and watch your SP hardly decrease. I still might swap regen for Carlammas if it allows some more switches to gain a 18/220 Int rating, but it would be a tough call. Thinking about the properties or regen, I might even have to say that the small increase in SP from 200 to 220 wouldn't make up for the loss of regen in spell casting ability...

I think I like to play mages because they make me play a bit better. I lost way too many hacknslash warriors to a lead finger. but as a mage I generally have to take a bit more time and think about what I'm doing before I do it. Of course, this isn't always the case, and I've died due to lead finger syndrome, as well as thinking I have the buttons memorized and just pressing them without realizing that my spell books are of order. But generally, I play smarter as a mage.

Calris is doing well for me. I especially love hunting Great Bile Wyrms with Thorin's acid immunity. The last one I killed just dropped my most recent artifacts. You don't need to kill all the uniques, but one easy way to get them is to let Sauron summon them, teleport him and most of the others, then hunt them down. Make sure you do it on a relatively large level, so there's enough room for teleporting them away.

Witch king is easy to kill--only 6000HP and no breath attacks, and he's vulnerable to fire brand ammo--piece of cake!
Azathoth -- unbelievably dangerous, one of the topmost scary monsters in the game.
Omarax, Polyphemus, -- easy.
Kronos -- Save up some Slay Giant ammo, just for him--easy to do with Quiver. He's a pretty tough target for a mage. Or, kill him from long range--summons are no problem for Mage, and breath damage attenuates a LOT at 200'.

Qlzqqlzuup is very easy to kill. There are two techniques. In either case, you need to get him into a favorable geometry, either by teleporting him around, or using earthquake to make an appropriately constricted area.
* Get him with splash damage around a corner.
* Keep teleporting/banishing his summons until he summons a group of harmless monsters (like lesser hounds or trolls, etc) then start bashing away.

The only thing you would then have to figure out is how you would get +2 more Con, because you wouldn't lose any resistances.

Tartar you could do an even swap for the Glaive. It's not quite as awesome at it's base level, but it would gain you the speed and has slays and a dual brand, which the glaive lacks. Don't forget in your considerations: The speed bonus (while minor) would improve your damage per game turn with spells and ranged attack. And, as I said before, you might find a way to swap something else out for more speed because of the extra resistances it provides.

Defeated Sauron. It's much easier to fight him when not carrying a bunch of rods/wands for him to drain. when I realized he could heal himself so easily I tp'd him away and dropped my rods, then took him on. Melee'd with the Glaive of Pain until he tp'd himself away, then mana stormed after that. It seems he maxes out his damage somewhere in the vicinity of 600, so I just kept healed to 600-700 hp and was fine. Did I get lucky?

Well, if I did get lucky fighting him, I didn't get lucky with his drops as I got absolutely nothing. I really wish I had Cubragol (if not Ringil or Feanor). Oh well, my boots (+10) are nice and I've got all the Rings of Power... but the One Ring.

I spent half my fortune on Life potions, so I've got 20 of those, 15 of Healing, 7 of Mana Restore. I think I'm gonna go for Morgoth right away. I'm only +33 hasted, but I've got the 4 immunities and all resistances. I'm going to initially try the Glaive of Pain melee on him... we'll see how it goes.

My first winner! Morgy was about as difficult as I expected. I started off alternating rift (to slow), then melee, but then began to switch to mana storm instead of melee as it seemed to be more effective.

More than difficult, he was frustrating. He kept healing himself off of my pack... I didn't understand it because I only had my healing rod (I had set all of my others down), and after it had been used once, I didn't think he could do it again. Is there a way to prevent that?

Also frustrating, I knew that it was likely he would drain charges (Sauron did it, so why not him?)... so I "wisely" (as I thought)... place my valuable Detection and *Identify* rods behind me before Morgoth got to me to attack. Of course, as veterans know... they were no where to be found due to earthquake/destruction. Lovely. Oh well... easy come, easy go... at least I've got my win. :)

For posterity, my winning kit was:
Glaive of Pain (+12, +30)
Belthronding
Nenya
Vilya
Trickery
Gem
Angon - Randart Robe [2,+28] (+3 INT, DEX), (rCold, Blind, Shards, Nether)
Aman (Fire Imm)
Thorin
Numenor
Cambeleg
Speed (+10)

+33 hasted speed
