My new attempt. A combat archon mindcrafter.

Character is now level 32, just finished cloning pits. It was actually quite rough, I was a bit under-damagy. I was only doing about 185 per round in melee going in. But I felt read. I DID manage to pull it out, but it was pretty hairy for a bit.

Doing Clones when I did was the result of a chain of events. I was on dlvl 35 dragon's lair, a bit low for my 29/30th level character, but I felt pretty secure. I had a 1 cost magic-map/esp/detect everything being mindcrafter, I was very stealthy, at heroic, and was doing about 175 damage per round melee.

So the best/worst happened. I find a pretty large vault, and I have a special feeling about the level.

All told it ended up having 4 artifacts in it, 3 of which I recovered. I probably could have gotten the 4th, but I didn't really care about stone of lore, not needing the perilous ID very badly. :)

Getting to all of the vault was a pain though. At the start there was a dracolich, which even with nether resist, if he breathed nether really hurt (he did once). I teleported away, came back and teleported him away. After that nothing was TOO bad to kill in the vault until -- freakin' Hypnos, Lord of Sleep, but I saw the message when he woke up. It was one of those vaults with half glass walls, though I had ESP usually anyway. So he's WAY out of depth, he's 60-something. He was hemmed in by some other things though, like 1x passageways. So I got near him, killed tht thing next to him, and managed to teleport him away, as he knocked away half my hp and drained some stats.

All told I netted Thalk, Hammerhand, and Thranduil. And Thrand was super-bonus for me. I was so needing poison resist, and wow, Thrand has resist poison as extra!

So that led me to do the vapor quest, which I was waiting to have poison to do. I endulged in a bit of mutating fun by playing with the weird fume without chaos resist on. Got some mediocre bad stuff, and shriek and +4 str. Call me She-ra thanks. I got one pretty bad mutation in there, the -2 speed for +2 con, fatty. But I was able to remove it in Zul without removing anything I cared about.

Then I FELT able to do cloning pits, but I was very nearly wrong. I need more damage than I had, which I'll have to remember for future characters. I was only doing about 185 per round, and that just was barely sufficient.

Father Dagon's took me too long to kill, but I got lucky and he didn't summon at all. Gachapins were annoying as always. Summoned hydras like mad. And then I was clearing it from the far left side of the screen going back towards the gachapins, and in the middle of fighting something, It summons hydras around me. Hydra's were really annoying the whole time. I'll cut it short and say I finished but it was a near thing.

This is too longwinded already, so ending here.

You seem to trust teleport away a lot... Especially bossed seem to resist it a lot. And a failed tele away next to Hypnos...

I NORMALLY don't depend on it nearly as much so as this. But I knew there were artifacts behind him, and I cheated a bit. I looked and found out if he resists teleport or not. I'm a bad person. Monster spoilers :(.

Until you get to harder stuff, in general things don't resist teleport. Some undead is the reverse, and lots resist, but for a good while most things don't resist tele, and only a few (until later in the game) CAN'T be teleported.

I get REALLY stupid when it comes to vaults. Especially when I know artifacts are in them. I take a TON more chances than I normally would.

I do try to leave myself outs always. Have teleport staff if I don't have resist confusion/blindness both. Have teleport level scrolls, desruction staff/scrolls, you get the idea.

But by all means point out better ways to do things to me. I'm always up for learning stuff. I've already learned a ton off reading the character dumps in this ladder.

On 24.3.2006 15:40 Mat wrote:
monster spoil all you want :)
Anyway, even if monsters don't "resist teleport" they resist teleport from time to time, at least's what I remember from when I stacked teleport_other into the same box banishment was already in labeled "not worth the time in Heng".

Maybe I should open that box again.

I used to be very scared when it comes to vaults. Now with preserve off things have changed quite a bit and I've found me trying to enter vaults for nothing better than the phial.
Not sure if you noticed already, but you can check what artefact is on your special level by using stairs, checking lost list and going back to the level. But it's cheating imo :)

I had an archer killed in a vault when a scroll of phase door did not move him, and I still have no idea why that happened... well, not happened...

On 24.3.2006 15:59 bogwtf@gmail.com wrote:
I've had a few times where I have used phase door and not been moved as well. Not sure how/why that happens.

On 24.3.2006 16:49 stile@imsa.edu wrote:
Hmm, I almost never have things resist teleport unless they say they resist teleport. Like if they did resist it, it would say they resist teleport in their desc thereafter, and it's because they have that flag. There is both resist and no-teleport, for monsters. The thing is, monsters who resist can still be teleported, you just fail a lot. In the crypt quest, I kept trying to teleport black reavers a few times, and I'd get them teleported eventually.

And as far as your phase door scroll, I dunno. Unlike bogwtf I don't think I've ever not had it work. I mean maybe it teleported you 1 square and you didn't notice? It sucks whatever the case was. I never use phase door to try to escape, unless I'm really screwed over. I only use that to do -- I forget the term, but like ranging things a ton, with arrows or ranged spells, and you use phase door just so they can't melee you while you range them to death.

I'm a firm believer in teleporting away and walking back, more often than not.

I find, in mid game, teleporting away is EXTREMELY useful. In late game, not quite as much so, but you can learn pretty fast what resists and what doesn't. It's still useful, just not AS useful. But that's just my opinion. I do _not_ suggest depending on it with your character's life like I did with hypnos. But as I said, I glanced at monster spoiler and saw he didn't have resist teleport. :) I need to get away from doing that.

And yeah, I was aware of the stair thing and checking artifacts. In fact, bogwtf told me about it, I think he'd read it here.

Small clarifiaction on teleporting away. I ASSUME you know, but if you don't it's a beam, so it can b e quite handy at times in cleaning up stuff. I like to have numerous charges, either by 4ish rods, or a couple wands charged up.

I always found relying on wands and staves very risky, because so many greater undead drain charges. Typically for me, I'd lug around 1 Staff of Destruction (0 charges), and a number of ?oRecharing, and then recharge and use as necessary, in real time.

Just updating character dump.

Clvl 42 Dlvl 57.

I have an odd mix of EQ, and somehow I managed to ditch all my rings of sound. I'd have full coverage now if I had a ring to switch in for my +4 speed ring I just decided to use until I get a sound ring again. I got rid of all mutations, and have a really nice life rating and max possible on stats. Used 2-3 total new life potions at different times on this char. It's nice to actually regen hp instead of being a slug because of too many mutations.

I agree dzhang. Most of my characters only have 2 staves after a bit. Healing and destruction. And it's understood that both might not be useable depending. I go pure rods after a while.

I do need to do recharge scrolls more than I do use them. Mainly for destruction as you just outlined. No way can you risk it on heal in case it explodes, but for destruction that's wise.

Random comments, mostly from my last character Random.

I willingly had an item that had ancient and foul curse, I think it was the Terror Mask. It's annoying, but not insurmountable by any means if you have anti-magic to make sure you won't get statufied.

This was kind of seq-waying into how in late game, I really like having a chaos-brand weapon. You find out some stuff that shouldn't get confused -- does.

Did you know Cyberdemon's can be confused? And if they are, they're total wimps then? No firing rockets at you, and likely to hit the monster next to them instead of you. It's amazing some of the monsters that are still able to be confused. Plus poly rarely works on high end shit. Poly and the teleport are the main two annoyances, both of which many high ends will resist. The one other annoying thing is earthquake, but it both isn't THAT bad and happens rare enough.

Just random musing. If I hadn't been using a weapon getting 9 attacks a round with chaos brand, and also hadn't had ancient and foul curse (and thus killed like 250 cyberdemons) I never would have really noticed the confusing thing as being AS good as it is. It isn't only cyberdemons, but that's the most in your face example.

Please, could someone tell me how to do a character dump from the game when you died that round? Sadly, while fighting Sauron, in a huge huge vault, I quaffed a heal, got gorged, he got two rounds, he did something that took a couple hundred off, then mana stormed and killed me. I want to know how to take a character dump RIGHT NOW. I haven't done anything since I saw the message he did a mana storm and I have negative hp.

Please tell me the command.

Thanks in advance.

Darn those special feelings and huge vaults, so hard to ignore.

You are dead now, no need to stress yourself. Just make sure to do a post-mortem character dump later when the game offers you to do so.

It doesn't seem to offer me to do a character dump. Just a screen dump, which isn't nearly as useful. There isn't some command you can do to take an actual character dump, not screen dump that you can do anytime?

I'll include the screendump I had it take for me to this character, but it's not a full character dump.
