With her, if I don't have either: A) Great fire resistance, or B) At least equal speed to her and a devastating attack; then I run.

The upper level and unique cards tend to be really bad news (IMO the Black Mariah is in a stiff contest with the Troglodyte Beastlord for the nastiest monster for its depth in the game), generally don't carry worthwhile treasure, and regularly show up out-of-depth in card pits if you have auto-scum on. Be very cautious around them until you get a feel for what they can do.
