I'm pretty comfortable with archers in ToME so when Kyudo started having success, I was perhaps overagressive, going after Shelob at level 23. Fortunately, Kyudo survived.

The dark elf lord quest was a near brush with death as well. How exactly does one deal with that many summoners simultaneously? Kyudo killed everything but the Dwellers on the Thresholds, and tried to limit LoS while being as stealthy as possible. Unfortunately, one woke up when there were three left, and it immediately started summoning. Kyudo got the situation under control, but all 3 were awake by the time the summons were gone and the second he poked his head around the corner, all 3 started cranking out monsters like there was no tomorrow. He barely got away. This game seems to revolve around summoner management to a greater extent than other 'bands.

Malekith was just ridiculous. After hunting for him on the level for a while, I couldn't remember how powerful he was at all, so I cheated and looked him up here. Yikes. Kyudo didn't even bother trying. Discretion is the better part of valor.

Yes, summoning spells in Hengband apparently operate like ball spells--i.e. if you're a bit out of LOS, monsters WILL be able to summon, and for that matter, lob ball spells at you too. The Dark Elven Lords quest certainly doesn't help what with 6 Dwellers packed into that small space. Stealth is your definite friend there.

And yeah, I wouldn't try Malekith until you have resist nether, a source of temp speed, and some powerful ammo. In the whole scheme of things, Malekith is a tiny fish, though, so beware :)

Also, try finding a good long bow of some sort, since archers are able to fire much faster with them. At least you have a good set of resists going, and some nice stealth to top it off. You'll need all you can get to succeed in Heng, so good luck!

It went pretty smoothly, so, being an idiot, I decided to grab a bunch of the skeletons moldering in Kyudo's house, head back to the dragon's lair, and convert them into nice ammo. Sadly, just at that moment, I realized that I had auto-scum off, so I turned it on before going in.

Before starting ammo creation, I zapped the rod of detection to make sure there wasn't anything close by (and there wasn't). Sadly, Petshop must have been just out of the range of detection, but still close enough to see Kyudo. During mid-ammo creation, suddenly there was the message "It breathes frost. You die. - Dump?".

Uh, oops. YASD.
