Half-Elf seems to be a good race in order to take advantage of the ability to recharge wands. Wands of Annihilation proved to be a slow but effective way of taking down Morgoth. I had to use all but one ?Mass Banishment and many ?Banishment, but not many !*Healing* and no !Life.

It was difficult to get enough supplies. Only found about 5 Wands of Annihilation the entire game, and kept running out of Wands of Drain Life and Dragon's Flame because of the occasional recharge backfire. Didn't get as many !Healing as normal either, even with a Staff of Healing through much of the game.

The issue seemed to be that as a rogue, I often used stealth to break into vaults and dodge around enemies rather than killing them, meaning that I didn't get as many drops as normal. The ability to break into vaults more easily didn't seem to compensate for fewer enemy drops, so rogues are likely to have access to fewer items than most classes. Ideally, it seems like rogues should be good enough at stealing that they could get good items to make up for their weak fighting stats.

Speaking of stealing, I tried it quite a bit but didn't see any benefit. It's no better than getting drops by killing monsters, and it's hard to steal from them without getting noticed unless you're powerful enough to kill them anyway. If they do notice you, then they wander around the level chasing you, which can be a problem. Also, stealing with a full inventory makes you drop something random. I'd rather it drop the stolen item if there's no room, rather than dropping something I already have that may be important. And would it be possible for Hit and Run to drop the extra item where you end up, rather than right next to the monster you ran away from? Of course, keeping a slot free would fix this, for those players who have more inventory discipline than me.

Also, I felt like a different kind of wand was needed that could damage non-living fire-resistant enemies, especially those that can drain charges. For these, I carried a powerful ranged weapon the whole game, which is a reasonable expectation I suppose.

On the plus side, rogues do have a pretty good set of utilities in the two books that they can use. Detecting all items and monsters is useful, as well as all manner of teleports. I was surprised to see that they cannot detect traps though - it's only possible to detect stairs, which is a bit underwhelming.

Looking through the race selection screen again, gnomes have better device skills than half-elves, so now I'm thinking that may have been a better choice of class. Hobbits are surprisingly good at devices as well, so they seem like the ideal rogue class, which is to be expected.
