Decided to take a break from the comp with something that can harness real damage. Found an early thingie of slay orc, so naturally went to the orc cave and sliced through it like hot butter. Azog dropped shit, then I remembered the Tengu + Death Swords quest and figured it couldn't hurt to generate a bunch of sword drops.

It didn't hurt. Found a nice dagger, a good offhand thingie to help with my crap AC, and now I'm harnessing a combined *LOTS OF DAMAGE* against everything.

This is going to go really well until it goes really bad, so should be entertaining. I figure if most deaths are going to be 1-shots anyways, so might as well embrace it.

Went after Smaug instead since he seemed like he'd be a kitten. Lonely Mountain unfortunately doesn't listen to the "small levels" thing and finding stairs without detection is awful. Still found enough entertaining things to make it worth it.

I've had a couple of drops that would let me harness more damage but have needed to keep other things online for their side-effects. The Helm of Hammerhand would be awesome, but I'm currently wearing my first-ever source of ESP in Poschengband and it gives rBlind.

The Finndo sword is awesome, but this wee trump sword has saved my life a couple times w/ the random teleport, and it has rNexus -- stat swap would basically ruin me entirely. The extra regen is nice too.

I guess Giant's Hall next?

What's this chameleon cave thing? Is it worth it??

On 2.3.2014 22:50 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
The Chamelon cave is...full of Chameleons = monsters that constantly change from form to another.

Example = Ice troll changes into a Ancient blue dragon then an Emperor wight!

The boss is the Chameleon lord. He's fun - Changes from unique to unique. You would want to kill him when he's in a vulnerable, but avoid him if he's in some uber-hard form.

On 2.3.2014 23:06 debo wrote:
Hmmmn, that sounds fun but pretty awful for a character like this. I really don't need something switching to a form that breathes 1600 of something I don't resist, with no option to TO or teleport away. Maybe I'll wait on a more versatile character for that one.

On 2.3.2014 23:08 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
AFAIK, the only other way to obtain ANY form of teleportation is to do the Vapor Quest and let the Weird Fumes breathe on you until get a Teleportation power!

Was happily meleeing a billion ogres when a fucking chaos mushroom fucking breathed fucking toxic fucking waste on me, and scrambled my stats to shit.

I tried sitting next to it for a while letting it breathe on me, and never got scrambled again. I even took about 100 breaths from nexus hounds with all my nexus resists off to see if I could get a better scramble, but nothing.

Was about to suicide when I remembered that I hadn't really ever found ESP before in poscheng, so kept going. Utgard-Loke almost killed me twice, but stairscumming and some good positioning got me the win.

Almost died in 1 turn to a greater titan when I opened up the Arena, but 3 !healing and 2 !speed later, I managed to escape.

I might do some other random dungeon next, I dunno. Maybe I'll just dive through angband until I die. I don't know how to fix these stats short of doing a legit statgain grind, and I don't even know where / when that happens in poscheng.

It's not so much the damage that is causing problems, it's that I went from 900ish maxHP to this in one turn. Worst

Antimagic cave was a great tip, thanks Hugo. It's dangerous, but manageable. A random dragon dropped 2 artefacts (Quickthorn and Tonbo Giri), which encouraged me to ditch my trump short sword. The missing 3rd regen is definitely noticeable, but now I'm hitting monsters that I really need to kill in a hurry, so this was the best setup I could manage. It's the speediest one, for sure.

Noteable near-death experiences were Scylla (though she was a normal hydra) and a random Iron Lich, which I knew was dangerous but even 3x fire resist was not enough to keep it from roflstomping me. Luckily, all my Sil experience has made me decent at baiting dudes when I have no escapes, and at least damage here is relatively predictable. Mr Iron Lich didn't stand much of a chance against my 1337 sta1rscumm1ng.

Still not seeing any stat potions, but hopefully they'll start dropping soon.

Uh wow a lot of uniques just went down on AntiMagic caves DL49, and it's not doing anything good for my !healing and !speed collection. I had to use one of each to survive, mostly because uniques don't look different than other dudes in this variant and I keep forgetting. I miss Vanilla's purple thing for uniques.

Anyhow got a huge collection of stuff as a result, but none of it was really useful other than elvenkind boots which I'll have to buff and then keep the lev boots as a swap I guess.

Traps are starting to be awful, I was fighting Itangast when suddenly two Iron Lichs appeared with a pack of ogres because of some "plane shifting" thing -- which I'm assuming was a trap? I didn't see any dude who could have done that, but who knows. It's like being in a mosh pit all the time. It's possible that this small levels thing is hurting more than it's helping now...

Was a difficult choice to lose 3 speed to get vamp from the death mace, but since I can't heal this seems like the next best thing. I notice that if I OHKO things with the death mace in my offhand, I don't get the life drain, so I put it in my "leading hand" I guess? so that it procs every time. Either that, or it's not supposed to proc on every hit I dunno.

I really wanted to shake up my config a bit, so decided to take telepathy off my head and put it on my armor by using the Demon Lord thing. It has fire immunity, telepathy, aggro... and an "ancient foul curse", which isn't very specific.

Once I had that in place, though, I was able to swap Hammerhand in and juggle a few other things for massive AC and damage.

Everything was going great -- I saw some bad stuff happening but most of it was barely noticeable. Then I was on the Garm dl50 quest or whatever, and with no warning message or anything I was suddenly beset by an Archon, an Ethereal Dragon, and a freaking Cyberdemon.

I think I could have taken them out, but I !Speeded instead and ran for the stairs, which were 3 steps away. Failed the quest, but I'm still alive. I'm assuming that Cyberdemon was summoned by my curse, because there weren't any dudes anywhere near me, nor did I get a message that I'd triggered a trap. So, I guess that means I should probably ditch this otherwise badass armor :(

Now I'm in Castle, and it's been great for potions so far. Found 2 !New Life there already, and quite a few stat pots. I basically figured I was dead, but I swapped in my rPois amulet, quaffed one each of !Speed and !resist, one !healing to get over 50% HP, and then started swinging... and with vamp I was gaining HP faster than they could breathe?!

Surely you can find a ring with Poison and Disenchantment resists to replace your Ring of Protection with. Sure, it would suck to lose that much AC, but you absolutely require all resists covered if possible. You would still have 200 AC in addition to whatever the replacement offered.

In reality, with so much HP and a vampiric weapon you would be better off with Disenchantment than Poison if you had to choose one of them.

I always think it's weird in the design of these games (and JRPGs, actually) that you get to a point where you have your resists / defenses covered, and the final-level monsters are like "Ok cool so we're just going to do stuff that is unresistable or ignores defenses". :)

Barring the fact that I never got a chance to face the serpent, I feel like I've had a pretty good poschengband experience. I usually don't like games that are this long, but this one is super fun. Having said that, I think it's time for reasonably long *band break now :)

Congrats / commiserations. A well-told tale of a game in which you clearly had lots of fun, which is really what the game is all about - winning is just a minor detail. In such a long game, the journey has to be what its all about, rather than the result, and Chris's reenginneering of what is IMHO the best variant of them all (ie. Hengband) ticks that box very nicely. However, from a winning perspective, berserkers don't make the best endgame "touists" - the mixed skill classes are much beeter for that. Once you get a Beserker past Level 70, you really should just dive down to kill the boss (keeping the use of recall to an absolute minimum - the leading cause of death). The only clear "mistake" you made is dieing with 19 potions of *Healing* sitting at home - a post level 70 beserker *must* carry all their *healing with them - !healing is just like CCW for other classes. I generally store !Life for the final fight, but will carry these also if the stock of !*heal* is depleted.

On 12.3.2014 13:40 debo wrote:
Yes, it was super fun. Now that I've experienced most of the side-dungeons and such, I'd be more likely to just dive-to-win next time.

I agree that leaving the healing behind was foolish. I'd been suffering from item destruction throughout the whole game, so this was a coping mechanism, but actually at this stage with rC+++ I don't think i was ever losing any potions to anything, so it would have been better to have them.

I think I still probably would have lost, even with all my *Healing* The perfect storm was that

(a) I couldn't run (he was too fast)
(b) I couldn't get to him (too many dudes that didn't die in one hit) (c) I couldn't charge (too many dudes)
(d) I couldn't hide (too many dudes that eat rock)
(e) I couldn't vamp (too many dudes with no life)
(f) He was summoning dudes faster than I could kill them all

Some things

(a) Charge might be more interesting if it worked more like Sil's exchange places (i.e. you always exchange even if there is a guy behind, instead of being stonewalled in groups, but maybe you suffer some penalty, call it "Wade" or something instead)

(b) Does Psycho Spear always hurt that much for all classes, or is the damage blunted by e.g. Wis or some hidden magic resist stat I don't know about? Everything I encountered in this game seemed pretty fair and normal except for that spell, it's like a mana storm except everyone does it and it gets spammed even worse than storm. I think it makes sense for a Berserker to take that much damage from it, but it seems a bit weird for everyone else if that's how it works?
