Maulers hit pretty hard per blow, so the aura of retaliation should be quite powerful. Perhaps shuffle in Rohirrim as well to cover up resists again (and give some much needed dex). Or, if you are really bold, that Kamikaze robe might be interesting for a Mauler as it also covers up sound (though not lightning so you'd need to get that someplace else). Low AC is really bad, but it sort of combos with an aura of retaliation, and the +2d is very nice for a Mauler. That crusade lance would be hugely powerful, probably 8d8 with slay evil (eventually ... and eventually even 9d9!). But you'd have to test it to see as I'm just guessing ...

There are level restrictions on Mauler dice boosting and I think you need to be CL40 to get the full boost from a 40lb weapon (+2d2).

I've played a lot of unusual rooms games, but its been a while. At some point, I find I need to move to The Castle to improve my gear. You should find better arts there than in Angband (L1) or The Icky Caves (L10). Of course, R'lyeh is better still, but I think you would quickly die there.

Regarding Kamikaze: You are correct that the AC biff might just be too much to swallow. It's sad, but I don't think I've ever seen anybody use that item (other than showing off on max dam character dumps). Too bad my golem never found it since a 320 or so base AC can really handle a -80 or even -100 swing. The only comment I might add is that your block technique could somewhat offset the AC biff. Since you asked for spoilers, Block gives +w/20 + (w/100)^2 to AC where w is the weapons weight in decipounds. So a 40lb lance (w = 400) give +36 to AC. And 80lb 'Big Punch' gives +104 AC! But Kamikaze still might not be worth it.

[1] The Mauler special attacks all restrict you to just a single blow. Thus, they are much more useful early on where you might only have a single blow anyway (And this was much more relevant before fractional blows were added since you might be stuck with 1 attack until after CL30!). Use them whenever the effects might matter (Stun, Knockback) or, perhaps the Crushing Blow is still worth it. It gives and extra x2 to x5 damage (random and level based) that stacks on top of any criticals. So you can do *alot* of damage with that single strike ... unless you miss! I wouldn't bother with Critical Blow anymore as it really only matters early on.

[2] Maulers get dice boosting to weapons based on weight: 20lbs gives +1d0, 25lbs gives +1d1, 30 lbs gives +2d1, 40 lbs gives +2d2, 50lbs gives +3d2 and 60lbs gives +3d3. There are also level restrictions on the maximum bonus: +1d0 max until CL30, +1d1 max until CL35, +2d1 max until CL40, +2d2 max until CL45, +3d2 until CL50 at which point +3d3 is allowed. So Big Punch goes from 8d5 to 11d8 while you HL goes from 4d8 to 6d10 (but also slays evil).

[3] Maulers get extra damage from weapon weight: +(w - 150)/10. So a 40lb HL gives +25 damage. Big Punch gives +65 damage. Maulers also get their Str bonus added again if the weapon is at least 20lbs. So with max str, you get +20 + 15 + 20 = +55 damage (where the +15 is the 2-handed wielding bonus). With your puny Spectre str, this is only +8 + 4 + 8 = +20. Get some more str!! :O

[4] Mauler techniques are pretty self explanatory, I think. Splatter is great in crowds, Block is important against heavy hitters like Atlas, Killing Spree is wonderful for charging up your speed counter in crowds of weak foes prior to major battles, Tunnel is nice if you ever find Iron Ball, or if you just want to get around (but rather irrelevant for a spectre), and Maul is, well, just rather nice for max damage output. Oh, and don't forget Drain against living opponents. But you can only choose one of these at a time, so pick your favorite.

if tunnel really works just like spectre pass-wall, my next mauler will definitely be an android. GCV scumming is much easier with pass-wall, and the android should bootstrap up to the tunnel clvl very quickly after his first vault clear or two. he has much better native stats for a mauler.

I'm definitely enjoying my stacks of consumables. I usually only enter the dungeon with CCW and healing potions. when I re-kit, if I have sound + 2x/3x cold res I'll start carrying *healing* regularly (right now I just dump them off after dungeon runs). should be doable.
