Early cheese with a 40% staff of power involved walking up towards the sea shore and taking on a Cyclops! One activation gave me a bunch of experience levels but a very angry rock chucker in the bargain who proceeded to take me down to 20hp. I tried a 43% teleport and failed, but lucked into another action: Phase Door. Risky, but it landed me out of the bugger's detection range so I fled on foot :)

Next up: 5 Headed Hydra, good for CL12. I actually killed that one with my 3 remaining zaps (innate poison resist is nice).

So we see that the Lich can scum a bit at the beginning. But this only gave me CL12 so isn't too bad. And its not like I could get that staff recharged at the moment so I guess it's time for Thieves and Wargs ...

Pure spell casters play quite a bit slower than powerful melee characters, and Liches are probably a bit slower still due to the nearly universal monster resistance to nether. I spent quite a bit of time in The Forest in an attempt to circumvent this weakness, but that place is rather risky. Even packs of Light Hounds quickly surround the player (walls are replaced with trees).

So, I moved to the Orc Caves and dove a bit, running from evil monsters as necessary. In the process, I discovered another weakness: It is impossible to find ego items with this build! You get the mage non-existent pseudo-id and you can't exactly afford to just identify all the objects you find. So, I destroyed most objects, except those dropped by uniques (known to at least drop good). And all the jewelry has been average so far (except my Thieves' reward).

Ah, but perseverance is key, and the VM just dropped the Stone of Lore (as well as even more stealth). Actually, stealth is the saving grace of the Lich early game as it often means that the 30+ monsters you land near after a panic teleport are sleeping.

A wand of rockets really helps speed things up, and at this point, there are enough goodies to pay for recharging. I should probably toss in that staff of power and return to Camelot. I have the firepower to take down all the knights at this point, but lack the detection to see them coming.

As a result, I got resistances pretty much nailed down, but am woefully slow. I guess a ring of speed would be a little too much to hope for just yet, but heck, I'd settle for a lowly staff!

OK, *now* things are looking up. I stared down a Solar for Luthien and at long last began to find staves of speed. And I even found a staff of healing too! Now I can take down most big bad dragons, except perhaps I should lay off those Storm Wyrms.

Time for some Demilich melee! It's rather nice not to have to lean on devices and their concomitant one and done tactics. And drain base attacks are absolutely huge! Hopefully, this will sustain me until I can achieve my ultimate form.

So, back to devices and mana bolts, which works well except when a GWoL breathes 9 out of 15 moves. Well, at least it wasn't summoning :)

Dworkin jeweled me, so I'm pretty happy with my equipment at the moment, especially as this allowed me to swap back in my spell power amulet. But I lose levitation, which I just noticed, so I guess its time to leave the lair. Whatever ... I just got my 2 rings of speed anyway so it's time to move on to The Arena anyway.

Only 666 hp and I think I'll lose even more life at my next evolution.

Yikes, but I hung out for that last disintegrate to kill him anyway. Its really getting to the point where I need to carry ?Teleport but I keep forgetting.

Liches are slow to evolve, but this is intentional given what their final form is. Don't worry, though ... I'm almost there!! :)

Dungeon Quests are done and I finally rolled up thru the Fenghuang in the arena. Next is the GWoP, and I don't have the firepower to take it down. I became famous enough to reforge Crisdurian (2.64 Mgp) and the result was OK: *Ac and Nx. I could use both, but not just yet. Next up was Thanos, and I tried an amulet this time. With reflection and a +5 con boost relative to my spell power amulet, I can't really pass this up. 500hp mana storms will have to do!

I don't like Mt Olympus for a passwall character as it is too much effort to navigate thru the walls while trying to keep an eye out for the bad guys. Typhoeus proved extremely difficult to lure into position, and it was a risky finish. In Angband, but contrast, I can set up long corridors with stone to mud rather easily, so I'll hang out here for the rest of the game. Perhaps, I'll make a short trip to R'lyeh though.

Plenty of restore mana, only with just 13 potions. I used all 5 charges and just a single potion, and several of those were just to top off as the J approached mana storm range.
