Its too early for a post ... Even a young black dragon nearly took me out with its weak acid breath. And there aren't really many options for acquiring acid resistance, too. Lightning is a similar problem ... I guess I'll just hold on for L35 when I shall evolve into a Undead Beholder (with resist base).

I like to play beholders for early combat. An 18/60 dex will grant a second blow no matter what your strength is. Perhaps nimble would be a better personality than combat? Perhaps not, as getting that third blow will require some strength. 18/30 to be exact, along with an 18/80 dex. I finally managed this and have been scouting the BM ad nauseam in hopes of damage rings. The downside to this strategy is a low starting Int (I began with a 12) but magic devices can fill the void nicely until stat gain.

My big moments were a ring of lordly protection snagged from a risky vault, and a giant pit of 203 giant skeleton trolls worth about 80k xp. This was only doable with levitation and hiding behind chasms as I could only handle one at a time!

DL33 is rather deadly. First, I fainted with a terrible feeling of death and was convinced it was a ring of speed ... until a couple of Ethereal Dragons came at me from off screen. Man, one breath would have ended it all, but neither chose to breathe on me, so I lived to tell my tale. Next, vaults are rather common too. Last one had, among other things, an Ancient Blue Dragon. Still no lightning resist but I think I could take a single breath. And CL35 is still a long way off ...

I finally reached CL35 and the beloved undead beholder form. With this, I can put a damage ring on nearly every eyestalk and rage! Too bad I need that lousy ring of strength for my last attack as I'd really like all six rings to be slaying rings. Perhaps Hammerhand could make an appearance?

Beholders are deceptively powerful. Their melee damage is not particularly impressive, but the effects of their gaze are quite useful. Titans are a joke, even if the beholder lacks adequate AC to withstand more than a couple of rounds of melee.
