The points in theft probably could have been spent somewhere else (e.g. raising the damge of the ray guns a bit more), but I liked to try it out, and it is quite fun to clobber a few thousand gold pieces out of a confused dinosaur or cape buffaloe. Sadly you can't really do much with all that money, since the implant research takes forever while having a high speed and I really didn't need much consumables in the end with two healing artefacts equipped but a few scrolls of Power Cell to keep my ray guns and tools charged.
The mutations were rather abyssal, at least the random teleport is seldom enough to not really be a danger.
