DL 9. First real brush with death survived. Detected down stairs shortly after arriving on level. Attacked by a horde of half orcs, so retreated to stairs 'just in case'. Turns out stairs weren't in a dead end as I expected so retreated further, quaffed only potion of speed and dispatched all half orcs.

Turns out the half orcs were coming from a 4 chambered room. Now an ogre horde was on the attack. I used substantial mana battling the half orcs so this time when I retreated to the stairs, I stayed there. That is to say, I stayed there until they surrounded me, then I phased away. That was my only mistake.

I spent the next several hundred turns, fleeing from the ogres, the tengu, the dark hounds and the large kobold. Finally I found myself in a safe haven. I headed south in search of stairs, my health full but mana now in the single digits. Instead I found Ulwarth 100' to the east. He came after me so I fled west. Unable to outrun him, I found myself at an intersection and cast 'detect traps/doors/stairs'. There was a stairway only about 50' away to the southwest. Yeah.

I proceeded west, a thin wall horizontally separating me from the stairs. I passed the stairs then the corridor turned south. Then I recognized the formation. I was in a moat. The stairs were in a checkerboard room. The only entrance was in the east wall, about as far from me as it could be. Luckily Ulwarth wasn't gaining on me so I traversed the southward corridor I was in and headed back east. I knew there would be things inside the room, I just didn't know what.

As I reached the reached the south-east corner of the moat, I met a blue worm mass. I really didn't want to see a breeder. I had enough mana to phase, but only twice. With Ulwarth still about 50' behind me, I decided to try and plow my way through. I mercilessly struck the worm mass with my cold-branded weapon. Doh! Switch weapons and repeat, this time it died. Ditto the next, but now Ulwarth was upon me and hitting pretty hard. I still had two pushover to get by and then who know what else was still inside the room. I'd already had to chug one of my CSW's. I'd never make it.

I cast phase door, at least I tried to. Ulwarth hit me a few more times and then I cast it successfully. Did it put me in the room? No, of course not. I landed in the moat to the north. Ah-ha, but Ulwarth was trapped behind the worms and the rats, maybe all was not lost. And as soon as that thought entered my mind I saw him appear in the moat just to the east of me and push past the last remaining blue worm mass between us. Once again he was about 50' to the east of me, so I sprinted west. I had a half-baked plan. I'd circle the moat again, and then once again try to plow my was into the checkerboard room. Yep, that's the same plan that didn't work just two minutes ago. Probably should have thought a little harder. Mana was down to 1 This was it.

Everything went as planned until I actually struck the first of the numerous worm masses. It didn't die. I really wanted everything to go perfectly. Scrambling for ideas I came up with plan B. I threw a flask of oil at the mass of worm masses hoping to kill a few at once, but it didn't explode in a fiery inferno. It didn't even kill the worm mass that it hit. Back to plan A. I killed a couple of masses with my spear before Ulwarth was upon me. I wasn't going to make it in. I wouldn't last more than 3 rounds with him stabbing me in the back. So, in desperation, I read an un-id'd scroll. It was Holy Chant. I only had one more unknown scroll. Didn't know was it would do. I began to read and then there was a blinding flash of light as the dungeon collapsed around me. *Destruction* hahahahahah.

I was entombed in scorched granite and rubble. I was blind, but I was alive. I spent the next several hundred turns tunneling through the rubble with my short sword, and at last I reached the stairs. Going down.
