Fang was hasted. Say away from shrieker mushrooms. You didn't have a chance without a ranged weapon. If you buy 5-6 flasks of oil and a blessing scroll, then you can read the scroll and throw the oil as an effective and inexpensive ranged weapon and gain 3-4 levels for killing Fang at CL1. This also works well against bullroarer.
