This one is pretty funny. I'm now at the point where I sing Song of Elbereth to make things run away, at which point I sprint after them and hack them down. I might get Majesty to contribute to the effect.

Song of Freedom has been underwhelming. I got it to help me find secret doors, since my Song was higher than my Perception, but I forgot that you get a +5 bonus to your Perception roll when resting, so in effect it's lower. (At least I think that's what's going on here.)

I had a fun character with Song of Elbereth and Opportunist in this vein. You can set this up at the start of the game to try it out: it is pretty fun.

Regarding Song of Freedom, you are right. There is also a perception ability for this and it is typically better to avoid taking inessential abilities in your main skills. At least the song will help with stuck doors and traps that you haven't seen (especially as it works at much longer range than does perception, giving you more chances as you approach). It will also help with webs and entrancement/slowing.

Continuing to do very well. Note that the Long Corslet (recently found) isn't "of Protection", and must therefore be an artefact to get those numbers.

Now at 950ft, min depth 800ft. This is one of those characters that would come along every now and again during development and cause us to nerf something ...

Yes, winning possibility is a bug, and must be fixed.

LT: Of course winning is not a bug, but we tend to not want to have characters get so far over the power curve that they don't need to be careful. In particular we had some in the past who were able to kill Morgoth (which is to a first approximation supposed to be impossible) without breaking a sweat, which meant our balancing was a little way off.

I actually think I exaggerated a little there with my comment. This character is definitely very strong, but not as ludicrously so as some of the heroes of yore.

Yes, I'm a bit surprised just looking at the character sheet that he is able to survive at 950 ft. His evasion is poor to average and his protection is good, but not excellent. Having Charge along with the excellent Greatsword seems to give a good damage output, but how does he deal with being surrounded? Is Elbereth helping a lot?

On 13.1.2012 13:29 Scatha wrote:
Yes, Elbereth and Majesty simply mean that I'm not being surrounded. I think some enemies were just running even if I wasn't singing (Does confidence 0 flee? If so I understand this, as it's -4 morale for my Majesty, and up to 2 for shallow creatures; if not I'm confused).

I do sometimes take reasonably large amounts of damage from something, but my Con is enough to soak that up, and Elbereth + Sprinting as appropriate will stop it happening too many times in a row. My Will is enough to stop anything truly nasty happening to me. Song of Freedom does turn out to be useful for me in terms of getting out of webs, but this is infrequent enough that I could probably rely on a staff instead.

Yes, morale 0 makes most monsters flee (unless they are not the fleeing type). I hadn't noticed that you have Majesty too. I'm a bit surprised you don't have Knock Back to go with your powerful Charge attack. Opportunist would be natural for a Majesty/Elbereth character but it would require some investment. Same with Archery. These may also just help you when you don't need to be helped.

Died of stupidity. I was exploring more around 900-950ft, and found often Majesty alone was enough to control fights without Song of Elbereth. A few more of my consumables were either used or destroyed than I would have liked. Anyhow, got into a fight with Thuringwethil which was raging back and forth a little, and then a couple of Gwathraukar joined in. I really should have started singing Elbereth at this point, but for some reason I forgot about it entirely and had my running away attempts foiled because I would try to move into an occupied square.

Well, serves me right, but a shame because I was looking forward to the throne room.
