Here's an uber power character for you: The Sorcery High Mage! Of course, I picked +3 spell power for the start as who wouldn't :)

Dark Elf for the innate magic missile to hold me until I find good power wands. Even the extra spell capacity makes the power of this combo truly awe inspiring!

Watch out Mr. J! I'm coming for ya!

I don't see the =3 spell power listed anywhere. please explain.

When a High Mage is born, they get to choose how much spell power they want (0 to 3). For each point chosen, they get -1 Str/Dex/Con and +1 Int. Also, +1 spell power gives about 7% extra damage from spells. Starting with 0.0.81, it gives 10% extra damage from devices.

My first go died to wilderness antics when I totally misplayed a 7 headed hydra that was 3 squares distant. Rather than retreating, I should have teleported. Instead, he followed my retreat, and with his superior speed, got an additional move to blind me. Game over.

So Take 2 was less conservative scumming a good start, and hit L20 in just 9 minutes. Now I magic missile for free!

Early vault had Elvenkind armor and a bunch of gold ... er, good items! Return to town and the BM stocked 4 -AcidBalls. I could only buy 3, but recalled quickly down, spotted Smeagol and got more gold for the fourth.

Fully charged, I get 32 acid balls. Also, there is the small matter of that Recharging spell ... Each acid ball does 60+3*lev/4 or 78. But +30% device power gives 101 damage.

A very lucky early acquisition as magic missiles were starting to get boring ;)

I am so riding my 11d4 free racial magic missile. Acid Balls in a pinch against something significant (e.g. Gravity Hounds!) but, by and large, levels are filled with weak critters, so the missile preserves both keystrokes and sanity.

Now that I have gold to keep my goodies charged, I just need better goodies :)

I'm getting my butt kicked down on L38, but I'm hoping for a good power wand so I can take out Smaug. In the meantime, I am accumulating quite the arsenal! I also found the phial so I could do the DE Lords quest and get a much better replacement. It doesn't look that great, but Chaos resistance is very sweet (since hallucination totally sucks!)

Experience is coming slow :(

Who knew Clairvoyance was so powerful? Now, I just need to don my ring of patience :)

I was doing well against Fafner until a mob of dread woke up (all it takes is one). So, I had to flee. I'll get him next time, I guess ...

Rodney is really coming along now. The three uber sorcery spells are Clairvoyance, Dimension Door and Telekinesis. I don't have Dimension Door yet, and it won't be castable for quite a while, but I can wait. In the meantime, I gather :)

I did the lair for a bit, but quit once Belthronding showed up and I decided that Legendary[10] stealth was perfect for my current play style, but costs me levitation.

Wands of Drain Life are now supremely useful, perhaps too much so? But I think I will leave them as is.

And finally, I haven't made any Sorcery spell changes (other than powering up Sleep Monsters and Slow Monster a bit, but still, I don't use them). I just can't bring myself to give Passwall to this realm. I would love too, don't get me wrong, but it would feel like cheating :)

I am soooo out of depth, it is just nuts! But actually, I am at the correct depth for wands of rockets. Now, I just need to survive long enough to burgle a few! Hopefully, my Legendary[20] stealth will assist in this endeavor ...

After great risk taking, I managed to score a wand of rockets at last.

Again, the monster population seems to be ridiculously strong ... My latest change was to give individual monsters a max depth field, and then to conservatively set that value. Many weak monsters (e.g. Trolls, Hounds, Vortices) can be found at any depth, but things like snakes and snotlings are restricted. Still, apparently the game balance is tightly tied to allowing L1 monsters at L75 ... or so it seems. Well, I did power dive from L20 in Angband to L75 without killing more than a handful of monsters, so I'll give it some more time. Plus, any unique deeper than L40 is cause for concern, and I flee from them all :(

Anyway, I think I better turn to scumming for experience levels, or this will end up being a very long game. So, I'm off to the Dragon's Lair ...

Yes, this is much faster, maybe 5x? Well, Brand stiffed me and so did Dworkin. Both cursed, and Dworkin, who is a wanted monster, entombed himself with his dying act. I wonder if Amberites couldn't drop there goodies before the blood curse?

I managed a blue dragon pit in rage mode, using simply my ring of lightning and endless dragon breaths. No stat potions, since my dragon frost probably destroyed them all :)

I might as well stay here until CL42 at which point GoI offers some new options for killing stuff.

Ooops. Accidentally recalled to Angband by mistake, but suddenly find that I can kill things after all! Druaga, Khamul, Bull Gates, Charon were all no sweat, and I think the extra device power really helps. Rockets would be fine without a boost, but the next best magic item in the game is disintegrate which is normally only good for 238 damage. For me, they are bumped up to 345, which is very nice as it saves me risking recharging on my rockets.

Levels don't seem so hard any more ... :)

Well, devices and my innate magic missile, but that stopped seeing use long ago. It used to be really hard, but device power now makes it very doable. As a HM, I get +30% device power (by choosing 3 points of spell power to start, which is the max). This makes the second tier devices (Disintegrate, Dragon Fire/Frost/Breath, Striking) much more effective. It also raises rockets to nearly the power of an unassisted mana storm, though not as useful (rockets hit the first thing in the way, so summoning shuts them down). The other change that helps out is that Drain Life now heals the player if it works, though the healing is still too small to help out against big monsters like Mycen who kill in just 2 (resisted!) breaths.

I think I finally got the level generation code under control ...

My second -Rockets required me to take a pass, as it was in a super uber crazy nutso vault. We're talking Nodens, Gothmog, all the Amberites, Combat Echizen and god knows what else. I didn't even try ...

My third -Rockets was out in the open, so now I am up to 2. Once I hit 10 or so, things will pick up. Toss in GoI (L42), and I can start taking out more powerful uniques. At the moment, things are very dangerous for me, though I am killing what I can.

Invulnerability! Now, to just use it correctly so I don't just die. Corwin obliged with Grayswandir, probably my best find to date (I really need con and nether), so I'm glad I killed the guy.

Some epic battles, especially vs The Flying Spaghetti Monster! Man, that guy is a mountain and I must have caught him on a bad day or something, since every rocket I fired ticked him off. Nasty.

But, GoI is very nice. It was fun to take Tiamat out even though I let her summon. She would bring forth dragon after dragon, only to kill her "helpers" with her nasty breaths, which I could just ignore.

Now, where are all those wands of rockets?

What is the max pval for Rings of Spell Power? And for Rings of ___ of Pacifism? I ask because I ran into Ring of Spell Power of Pacifism (-6) (+46%). I was wondering whether the heavy penalty for Pacifism was translating into an exceptionally powerful Spell Power ring (that is, higher pval than otherwise allowed), because if that were the case, it would be totally cool.

It figures I was a warrior, but whatever.

Spell Power is now limited to -3 as the best. If a Pacificist ring will decrease pvals further then that is probably a bug, but perhaps I'll just ignore it :)
