    High-Energy Magi

Man, every time someone posts about their "HE Mage" I think it means "High Energy Mage"... :P

You cast Stellar Converter at Morgoth!
Morgoth's Xentronium Platemail [+400] absorbs the enveloping plasma!
Morgoth casts Particle Ray! You take 6e23d1 damage!
Integer overflow error at 0xDEADBEEF - restoriing last save...

Good thing we don't have an Aardvark race or an Alchemist class...

The Aardvark Alchemist fires his AA Flak Cannon (20d2) (-5, +5)!
You don't take any damage, though, because you are a Rogue, not a Fighter!
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!
The tengu tries to teleport, but fails!

Sounds like the beginning of a variant, if it doesnt already exist.

And there I was thinking he'd noticed that subtle change to casting times that came in with fractional blows ...

Too many rounds of Master of Orion II? That is a game with serious "just one more turn" -syndrome.

I loved it at the time, but with hindsight I think MoO1 was the better game design. The micromanagement meant I never finished a Large game of MoO2.

It's different. I agree that MoO1 is better game (except for the bugs that create 32000 ship stacks) but MoO2 isn't much worse. MoO3 was a catastrophe compared to either of the two. I can't think any feature in MoO3 that was better than either of the two previous ones, excluding graphics. Game that should have never been made. It killed the series, and doubt that there will ever be a MoO4.

                So...
What is the toughest material in the universe?
Xentronium - 10 times as tough as titanium, and almost twice as tough as neutronium (!), if MOO2 is to be believed... of course, MOO2 says that adamantium is tougher than neutronium too, so take that with a grain of salt!
Superlatanium - The toughest armor in Stars!, each plate has 1500 HP. Probably more than twice as tough as neutronium - I'd have to check the stats table!
Orichalcum - The toughest stuff available in Dragon Quest, excepting perhaps darkonium or densinium... but definitely tougher than mythril or gigasteel!
Unobtanium - Nobody knows because it's impossible to find, duh! Except in Dwarf Fortress, or Avatar... but then they must be lying, because it's DEFINED as something that's impossible to find!
Phazite - No weapons can pierce these phazon crystals except weapons powered by... more phazon!
Metalloy - Whatever the stuff that the metools in Megaman are made of, it's completely impenetrable... except by black hole weaponry! (Yes, in Megaman 9, you can defeat even a hunkered-down metool with the Black Hole Bomb! I know, it's sacrilege!)
Uberleetium - By definition the script kiddie's choice of armor construction materials, it prevents all damage whatsoever, except that of the Banhammer weapon. (OK, I admit I just made "uberleetium" up!)

Agreed. Have you tried Sins of a Solar Empire or Sword of the Stars? The latter is closer to MoO and deals reasonably well with large-empire micro, but SoaSE is really surprisingly good for a real-time game.

No. I don't play games much anymore. I think that age does that to people sooner or later. I bought Civ5 few years ago but haven't even installed it to my computer. Games I play are more a "solitaire" -kind of thing now to me. Only games I play are MoO and Angband and even those can take several days, even weeks for single game.

                      CERNband!

EDIT: Just to replace nonsense padding: I've found an excellent game for people of the *band mentality is: Baldur's Gate Trilogy (BG1+BG2+BG2:ToB) playthroughs... WITHOUT RELOAD at any point. (That is, you can exit + reload, but no reloading if you lose a party member, have a bit of bad luck in random quests, etc. etc.). BG/BG2 is unbelievably rich tactically if you're in that mindset.

There is (or was, as of early 2010) actually an active community of people dedicated to journaling and talking about BG play of this type.

i can vouch for bg1 2 and tob, hoo and this thread, eek! but bg is not hardcore like angband... tedium drive to load imo~ anyway is very good multiplayer game (bg that is) also for those who dont know, there are several total conversions of bg1 available to let you play with improved graphics and xtra classes of bg2, search for bgtutu or bgtrilogy.. ive only tried tutu, but it works and i wouldnt play bg 1 without it unless i was really wanting a blast from the past, eek!

That would be rough! As I recall, there were a couple of seriously overpowered battles early on. You would have invested just enough time to make starting over a pain in the rear.
