    Angband Wiki

For a newbie (such as myself) I have a lot of trouble knowing what variant of Angband would suit me best. Some people suggest to play everything until you like something more than the rest, I'd like to say that Angband is an investment, you cannot pick up something and play it willy nilly and hope that after five minutes you can tell the deep differences between Angband and it's variants.

I call Angband an investment because there are people who've played the game for over a decade and still don't know everything about it. The game isn't simple by any stretch of imagination, a simple rogue-like would be DoomRL.

I believe a Wiki should be created in the hopes that newbies like myself that are new to the Angband universe could pick up the most suited Angband variant after doing some light -> heavy reading. In the end if you're going to play Angband, you'd better be prepared to spend the time.

    There is this:

This is what you want, except that it has very little useful content. Why? Because maintainers are maintaining, players are playing, and if any of us spend any time doing other angband-related stuff it tends to be posting here or to rgra.

I think a comprehensive wiki would be great, and I think the roguebasin one has the potential to become that. All that's needed is contributors to it.

      I was thinking simply expanding:

Just including differences between currently active variants, so it should drop down to about 4 or 5 Angband variants listed there.

Yeah, it'd be nice to have a "maintained" flag for each variant, and then sort the list first by that, and then by release date. Is Pav listening?

Just release date would probably do - after all, what does maintained mean except "has had a release not too long ago"?

Ok, well I contributed my bit to the Roguebasin wiki -- Sangband is now updated, at least clumsily.

Maybe just change the variant list on oook so that you can sort it by name and by latest release date. Each variant would have a short description like it has now and when clicked on it could expand to a nifty thing* with a longer description and a link to the variant's homepage at the bottom.

I have made the columns clickable. As for the blurb - well, contribute!
BTW homepage links are there, when applicable. Some variants don't have web presence, they exist only in netnewspace and on ftp sites.
