Last week was spent adding weather. Yesterday I made sure that the player can't leave the arena. It'd be a little implausible to put up permanent walls all around the open ocean, so I had to get a little more inventive.

Maybe, but naval mines are a thing that exists, and automatically destroying any ship that tries to leave the combat arena under the pretext that it ran into a dense cluster of them would probably suit your purposes.Everything you need to know about my roguelike playstyle:

This is true, and plenty of games have gone that route with e.g. giant fish that eat you if you stray too far, or an invisible sniper that one-shots you, etc. They're a bit immersion-breaking; I honestly rather like the solution I implemented as it implies, sure, you got away from the fight, but in doing so you've given up what you were fighting for.Comment
